Phil Spencer: You will see JRPGs on Xbox One

I don't get people who buy Xbox then pray for JRPGs.

Same here, I've never associated Xbox with JRPG. Iv'e always associated it with CoD and Halo, it's not Xbox without Master Chief. The Super Mario of Microsoft.

People want good exclusive games. The partnership with sakaguchi led to 2 great games. Hell Lost Odyssey with all its problems was probably still my favorite JRPG last Gen.

Yeah they want good exclusive games, but exclusive JRPGs on a system that Japan basically ignores? Lost cause.

I hope they fully fund some games that wouldnt otherwise be made and dont just pay for a year of exclusivity on multiplat games again, fucking things up for everyone

That's what I was saying. If MS wants an exclusive JRPG, they're literally going to have to buy it outright. Anything less than "We'll pay all your expenses & here's some profit on top besides" isn't going to cut it.

I wouldn't be shocked if MS did something and a proper Breath of Fire game happened, i'd say at this moment that's the most likely IP, or a none FF/Dragon Quest Square Enix one. Unlimited Saga maybe?

But what's this ms conference in December people keep talking about ? I know of a Sony but is Microsoft conference announced?

All this lack of faith in Phil Spencer. What happens if he turns around and brings a new JRPG to Xbox One? What if Scalebound ends up being a JRPG? What if there are other titles he has up the sleeve? We just don't know, and he has all the power in the world.

I don't think it would make financial sense to develop an Xbox One exclusive JRPG because it would tank in Japan, and as far as the West is concerned, I remain unconvinced that there are enough Xbox One owners who would buy JRPGs on the console, to the point that it would be a positive sales number.

Basically, everything on PSX will be PS exclusive, therefor, anything on TGA will be Xbox exclusive.
That's what I get from the hype thread.

Then I will consider purchasing the Xbox All-in-One Games and Entertainment System by Microsoft

Isn't the japanese next gen console market so small compared to the west?

As far as we know, Scalebound could be a date sim.

Is this meant to be serious? Scalebound is being made by Kamiya so that tells us all we need to know about what type of game as well as the quality level it will be at. And Scalebound is not a JRPG.

Easiest thing to do for Phil would be to help Atlus get Persona 5 on Xbox One.

I think PG could add in some RPG elements if that's what is necessary, and we can then call it an RPG, or JRPG.

Yeah, Microsoft has nothing to worry about. They can throw a great deal of money at any endeavor and not be hurt by it because of their immense budget. But I wonder if they feel that's it's a fool's errand to fund JRPGs again, as they did for Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon. Certainly it's a win for us consumers (at least those of us who own an Xbox One), but would Microsoft see it as a waste of time and effort?

I think they should test the market by remastering one of the 360 jrpgs. it wouldn't be that big of an investment if it failed

But then they still have to worry about horrible character design... ugh... that's literally the ONLY thing unappealing about Scalebound. That character design is down right awful.

Sorry. I guess I just assumed. Do FF/KH games sell on XB?

Going back to FFXIII sales, I believe the split was about 60% in favor of the PS3, however that was when the 360 was still very much dominating sales, so I feel it will be more skewed once FFXV releases.

All this lack of faith in Phil Spencer. What happens if he turns around and brings a new JRPG to Xbox One? What if Scalebound ends up being a JRPG? What if there are other titles he has up the sleeve? We just don't know, and he has all the power in the world.

But who would buy it? The demographics just don't work out when it comes to buying JRPGs. The Japanese have already demonstrated they don't care about Xbox, and the majority of Xbox's userbase is focused around the US/UK, where the primary genres are shooters and sports titles. Just look at D4, it was published as an Xbox One exclusive, and it sold terribly, Swery himself said so. I don't fault them for trying, but it doesn't make much business sense to do so.

They do, but only as a fraction of total sales. I bought FFXIII on Xbox 360 because my brother had my PS3 at the time, but anecdotally from talking to the EB Games cashier, 3/4 sales were PS3 versions.

It doesn't surprise me. Despite the early focus on JRPGs in the console's life, the Xbox 360 wasn't really a JRPG machine the way the PS3 was.

Microsoft's problem is they're not willing to take a profit hit to establish a franchise. If a game underperforms financially but does well critically, they still shitcan the series rather than growing it.

Their current first party lineup is pretty anemic, really.

Even if it's a constant loss/barely break-even situation, they should have a couple B-tier studios working on relatively niche titles like JRPGs, etc. You don't get surprise hits like Demon's Souls without taking some risks.

There hasn't been a single Kingdom Hearts game yet on a Xbox platform. So putting Kingdom Hearts 3, technically the 10th game in the series, and is finishing off the entire "Xehanort" story arc on Xbox One is REALLY weird.

I would also hazard a guess that every Final Fantasy game that has been put out on both Sony and Microsoft platforms has sold better on the Sony platform. I have no numbers to back this up, nor any sources, just simply a guess. Still, Final Fantasy is a series that doesn't depend on having prior game knowledge to play through a game, so that's less of a problem comparatively to KH3 being on XBO.

Lost Odyssey HD and Blue Dragon HD would be wonderful. I do hope MS push to get some new IP JRPG's but they just don't sell massively.

That's interesting to know. Thanks man. I wonder if XB owners would even want KH games. If they presumably think of something like Sunset Overdrive as too kiddy, what will they think of KH? By that same token, are there any family-friendly XB1 exclusives that have (a) done well and/or (b) are not Kinect/"whole family"* games?

*I would say "family friendly" is stuff like Banjo, and "whole family" is stuff like Kinect/party games.

Lol, no actual footage seen yet, just a 30 second CG trailer, and it's already better quality than your "usual jrpg". Also, probably not a JRPG.

It's an Xbox exclusive, don't you know how incredible they all are?
Still sore from Deadly Premonition

Perfect response

Also Xbox One already have the exclusive Scalebound, that's much better quality wise (probably, hopefully) than your usual JRPG,
Hey Phil, I'd love an RTS like Halo Wars 2!

Thanks for writing, EA have a new Tetris in the works for XBO!

He will never "have" Japan though, which is the most important market for JRPGs.

hopefully they bring back Lost Odyssey!

I can live without Blue Dragon, but I'd play another one if they made it.

Phil, just send a team to Atlus to help bring Persona 5 to Xbox One. And a collection that includes P3, P3FES, and P4.

Do it.

PLEASE.

If they're not even talking to Mistwalker anymore there's not to many other Japanese studios that would be willing to work with them on an exclusive JRPG.

Maybe they could pay Tri - Ace to make Infinite Undiscovery 2 or something of the like.

I don't think it's too far out of line to say Microsoft put at least as much first/second-party support behind JRPGs last gen as anyone else. Outright doubt that there's any substance behind the response seems like an overly negative reaction.

"...because Square Enix and other third parties are porting them. We're not actually doing anything of our own initiative on that front. That'd be absurd."

This is literally the first thing that went through my mind. The better question would have been:

"Mr. Spencer, do you actually intend for the XOne to compete in the JRPG market or simply allow the Japanese developers and companies like Atlus/XSeed to flood the PS4 with JRPGs while you do nothing."
