Sony to cut TV, Smartphone lineup; sees growth in PlayStation, image sensors

Sony is becoming less and less a household name and dropping TV or mobile will only leave PS4 in the typical household. This is not good at all for them. I am not sure how they can start rebuilding the brand.

I already said they made a profit, the hacking incident will cost them money obviously.

Im just gonna go out on a limb here and say it's not going to make that big of a difference in profit.

Sony is more of a entertainment brand more than anything today.

I find this a great news, giving priority to their divisions by making them healthy with a cut on their lineup is a good thing in my mind.

Really hoping the rest of Sony doesn't end up hurting PS by trying to milk it. :/

This.

They better not fuck it up. Let the team that's been guiding the Playstation division continue to do so, they've done an amazing job with the PS4.

This is incorrect. The Sony VAIO Z series remains one of the greatest laptops ever made.

Agreed. Owned two VAOIs (laptops) and the build quality/design were excellent. They were overpriced, and that was the problem. In a market where "cheap, point-A to point-B" is the primary consumer focus, this doesn't work. The expensive laptop market is being cannibalized by Apple (rightfully so).

Does this mean no Z4, Z4C, Z4V, Z5, Z5C, Z5V, Tablet Z5, Tablet Z5, compact are planned for release within six months of each other?

Bank loans?

I love my Sony Xperia Z1 phone.

I worry Sony may be focusing too much on bleeding their playstation base with TV and music services.

The playstation brand is working by being a games console. They should instead focus on what the thing does well.

Forget trying to bleed the people who actually bought it already.

They needed to cut TV a long time ago considering they inability to compete price wise and quality wise with Samsung.
I disagree on the quality part. I hope they'll keep releasing good TVs, because Sony TVs are heads and shoulder above everything else for gaming for me, in large part because it's nearly the only brand that produce TV sets with a decent (<20ms) input lag.

Too bad about the TV's as I am really happy about the quality on my 48'' Sony Smart-TV that I managed to get on sale not long ago. Before that I had tried out several TV's from various companies, but they all had problems with the colors, sound syncing, input lag and worked poorly when connected through a PC.

Still as my primary gaming TV I use my 55'' Samsung TV which I feel is unmatched when it comes to quality and user friendliness.

From my experience Sony and Samsung are miles ahead compared to other TV brands I have tried out.

I've had this Sony Bravia for 10 years and it still looks amazing a decade running. No dead pixels. No busted LEDs. No HDMI input problems. One of my best electronics purchases ever.

I bought a W905 last year.

Best gaming TV on the market.

Samsungs and LG's have horrible input lag = TV only

Problem is they don't market these benefits very well - you have to find out by reading stuff like HDTV test

The processing in Sony and Panny Tv's is great and fast.

I would love a 1080p OLED with fast image processing and low input lag. There are no options in the market at the moment.

Sony please,,,
I salute you fellow brother. Shits all over their range of TV's from this year.
Such a shame, awesome gaming Tv's...
Fuck Samsung with their 40+ms minimum input lag even in gaming mode.

Hope they done give up on their high end phones. The z series is really starting to shine

Agree, there's really nothing like them, the compact series is fantastic for people who want really high end phones but don't want to walk around with a TV in their pockets.. Like me.

Sony needs to trim the fat. Seems to be they're aware of this.

Funny enough I was eyeing up one of their TVs just recently and I'm getting the Xperia Z3 for Christmas. Their products are getting really good again imo...

But yeah they need to trim those divisions down. Too many products, quality over quantity and what not.

My first Sony TV, the 50" W705 is being delivered on Thursday. I didn't need 3D or a free soundbar so went with the W7 over the W8.

My 46" Samsung b6000 started to die last week and when looking for a replacement the Sony W7 and W8's seemed the best value for money all around; especially for a gamer and it's even smaller than my 46" because of the slim bezel.

Do Sony ever promote the fact that these TV's are great for gamers with a lot lower input lag than other competing brands; I see no mention of it anywhere other than reviews.

They're selling a lot of PS4's and could sell more W7's and W8's to those same people if those same people were made aware of their gaming strengths.

I tend to agree on the general idea, but that's not exactly true.

There's fast Samsung and LG (actually, fast Samsung sets and fast LG sets have lower input lag than fastest Panasonic). In fact, this year, LG has put some good sets in terms of input lag, Samsung ones were quite bad, though.

But I agree that many Sony TV are great, and mostly unmatched for input lag (there's a couple Toshiba sets that have sub-20ms lag).

Raw numbers from Displaylag.com:
Sony : many sets under 20ms lag (typ. 17ms)
LG : best sets in the 23-30ms range
Samsung : best sets in the 26-30ms range
Panasonic : a single set at 27ms in DL.com, usually in the 30s-40s

Really, i find it unbelievable that someone could think that Samsung TV's are better than Sony one's.

Price - performance, maybe.

Maybe because the samsung plasma is better than any sony tv picture wise for much less money. Sony probably has a picture advantage in the led department vs samsung and maybe by a margin for double the price.

It made a difference when PSN was hacked which cost them around $170 million but of course no one knows the extent of this hack tho.

The PSN hack was huge.

Those things maybe producing a better picture, but are made cheap and break a lot. From what i've experienced and read, Sony TV's are built better and last longer.

They need to market their tvs toward gamers and the like. There HDTVs have some of the lowest input lag on the market in large sizes. Put it on the box or as a bullet point for the showroom in stores.

Why aren't they combining assets?

I'd like a killer TV with a bluray slot in the back and PSTV/PS4 Remote Play functionality built in.

It's about time they did this, better to go for sure profit than chase big sales you might not get.

I agree, though they've should've done that a long time ago. Their TV & Smartphone business have been doing absolutely nothing but drag this company down financially.

Like many said here, i hope they keep their TVs as i love them a lot. They are definitely the best on the market hands down ! I've had Samsung's, Toshiba's and LG's and while LG and Toshiba are good, Samsung are absolutely worse in input lag and overall picture quality. Sometimes, i don't even understand why people buy Samsung because i feel it's so cheap.

The market needs a quality player, i hope at least that if Sony quits, someone else takes their place and continues making quality TVs.

Sony is not growing anymore, and if the tv and phones are cut then they will only have PS4, image sensor and life insurance really.

The PS4 does not make enough profit for them and if Apple, etc decide to make thier own sensor then they are really in trouble.

You need to do a little research.
