Xbox One beats PS4 on Black Friday, according to market-research firm

To get this data, InfoScout uses two smartphone apps that reward consumers for uploading their purchases by taking pictures of their receipts.

What don't you get? I didn't make any conclusions about Infoscout. I just presented their findings last year for comparison.

I just think most people forgot that post launch for a couple months it was rather difficult to acquire a PS4 so those Black Friday numbers might not be completely off but I have no idea. I only really ever see those monthly NPD numbers.

I think MS will edge out Sony by a small margin in November, but I do wonder how much this "victory" is going to cost MS. I'm assuming they're losing money per console sold at $330 a pop with 3 free games thrown in.

I don't get this? Yeah they won November last year but at Black Friday you couldn't find a PS4 really anywhere.

I believe the suggestion is that even if Infoscout's numbers for Black Friday turn out to be an accurate picture (which I think is in doubt, based on the sample size), it still wouldn't be an accurate predictor of the NPD numbers for November.

Granted, last November was a very special case. Chances are Black Friday was a much bigger portion of the pie this year than last. Still, very hard to draw any conclusions from this.

It would still surprise me if the Xbox One wasn't at least very competitive, if not the outright winner. If people still aren't buying Xbox Ones when they're substantially cheaper than the PS4, Microsoft is in serious trouble.

End of the day, if ps4 dropped the price of their system $200 dollars, would anyone have picked up a Xbox One?

It really means nothing, when we trying to conquer the whole world and not just the bubble of the US

Yeah, I feel like launch years are going to produce pretty wacky sales data in regard to Black Friday. Most retailers aren't going to offer massive discounts on the hardware (since the stock will sell out regardless) - and there's virtually no reason for the mass audience to adopt the product at that point.

Yeah. I mean, if anything I would compare last year's stats from this group to December 2013 NPD instead of November 2013 NPD since there wasn't a big boost in PS4/XB1 sales on Black Friday 2013 due to that month being the launch for both consoles.

Black Friday could have been the start of the PS4 being hard to find; If true then that would relate to the Black Friday stats from last year that showed Xbox One above PS4. The Xbox One also beat the PS4 for December 2013 NPD (mainly due to the Xbox One being easier to find).

So like I said before, while I don't think these stats are that indicative, I don't think we should compare the stats from last year to the stats from this year; Different situations. There wasn't a "Black Friday" boost for the XB1/PS4 in 2013 like there was for both of those systems this year.

Yup. They have to be bleeding money, but they also had to cut the price and invest on the market share, hoping to get it back in the future somehow. Even if they win, unless they win by a huge margin, it's still gotta be a huge financial loss (IMO).

I guess, It's better then having the units collecting dust at warehouses and shelves, and letting Sony just dominate the holidays in the US. I still can't figure out their long-term plan by taking a big hit on the XBO to try and win the holidays. Perhaps it's the whole Xbox as a brand vision, and not just as a gaming console.

Substantially cheaper AND unquestionably the better Fall exclusive lineup of games. Not sure that else they can do if they can't outsell the PS4 with a cheaper console and 4 Halo games for the price of one.

Yup. Great bundles for both consoles.

This is why you wait until 1yr after launch to get a new console. The Black Friday sales are always ridiculous.

Not sure I understand. This is the US market we're talking about. Not only was the 360 significantly ahead of the PS3 in that region, it probably surpassed the Wii as well a while ago.

But this is the point. In what world (apparently Earth) is one piece of the market more important than the whole market? People neglect the entire world, and some people do not understand why. And I would have to agree and say that I also do not understand.

Fixed, still salty they managed to release the game broken :(

What about what appears to be a flawed methodology? This doesn't appear to be a randomly selected sample.

Well, many companies that make AAA games wouldn't ignore a system that's doing well in North America. The PS4 is doing very well in worldwide sales and it's doing very well in the territories that are highly into the AAA games obviously.

Overall, being the top selling "core gamer" system in North America is simply a good position to be in when it comes to third party support.

Holiday 2015

I believe the reasoning behind it is that the American market generally sees a higher tie in ratio compared to other world markets. I believe I read an article about it a few months back, but can't for the life of me find out were the hell it is.

Yes, I completely understand that the market is important, but it does not exist in a vacuum, and outside of it, the Xbox One is, if I remember correctly, nearly outsold 2:1. You can't just ignore that, no matter how important America is.

If you find it I'd like to read it.

The console is $329, no way they'd release a slim for more expensive than it is now. I don't think they'll put a larger HDD in it either, consumers are showing that sticker price is king.

I said many times that this data doesn't look very indicative. I was simply just bringing up why Black Friday 2013 was very different from Black Friday 2014 and why they shouldn't be compared that much when it comes to PS4/XB1.

I was also basically guessing how last year's stats from this source matched to the December 2013 NPD outcome (Xbox One being above PS4). Just trying to make connections even if they are more than likely a huge stretch (haha).

Yes, and I don't think many people are ignoring it here really. These stats are about North America so of course many people aren't going to be bringing up the whole world.

The US is not the world. No doubt. But in the video game industry, it's the biggest market. Even Sony agreed by launching in the US and treating Japan like a second class citizen. The 360 was successful worldwide directly as a result of it doing great in the US.

I think the price point the XB1 is trying to achieve is interesting. If and when a slim comes out, that will be when the magical $300 will be achieved with.

The console is $329 for another 4 hours at the most. Then it's back to $349, then back to $399.

I don't think they'd do a slim revision that soon - but at the same time, I can't think of a console in more desperate need of a redesign. That VCR-sized brick is just crazy.

They could ship 4 working Halo games for the price of one.

The Xbox One has most likely sold more units in November in North America.

Look at that Xbox 360 numbers. And not just this chart but even going with the NPD data, software still sells so much on Xbox 360, its crazy. Say what you want, but 360 still prints money for Microsoft and can't say the same for PS3.
You're right, you can't say the PS3 prints money for Microsoft.

How big is US market? 40% of console market?

Infoscout last Black Friday:

Methodology last Black Friday:

"Of over 102k shopping receipts tracked by InfoScout on Black Friday, slightly over 1,500 included purchases of a gaming console or console game. The data includes purchases at all major retailers carrying electronics including Walmart, Target, Best Buy, GameStop, RadioShack, and others. For more information related to our data and panel representation, visit our data page."

Thanks for posting this, i think the big takeaway here is that their report is not completely accurate, although I would imagine that this does somewhat solidify X1's chances of winning NPD.

Mr. Community
Research might be shoddy, but price matters and 70-80 bucks cheaper is a strong argument.

I wouldn't surprise me if the bone outsells the ps4 this november.

poor wii u =/

In all honesty, it seem like Nintendo didn't want to sell a boatload of Wii U's this year because IMO, Nintendo wasn't too aggressive with the Wii U bundles. I mean I know the Wii U bundles are a pretty good deal, but the average consumer will see that it costs more than a Xbox One and near the same cost of a PS4 and laugh hysterically. Imo, Nintendo should of dropped the price down considerably by now, especially with those aggressive bundle prices from the competition.

As it's been repeated numerous of times, I just don't see the price going back up to $399. Even if MS beats out Sony in November and December, why kill any momentum?

At most, it could very well force a Sony price drop if the trend continues.

wow expected more WiiU % share, hope this survey is crap and real numbers show a better WIIU place on the charts

I really expect WiiU share of 15% or more
