Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

Honestly, either trading with sidewinder until you can purchase a hauler and then money starts to get in easily when you can purchase a lakon 6, etc. For mining i would wait until they implement drones, where you'll pretty much be a mining factory. Will be more profitable than the present state.

Or, nothing to lose sidewinder strategy, go in an extraction site, kill wanted criminals (they raised the bounties on them by a lot now). On reddit there's some dangerous NPCs with 4 million credit bounties. Wont be an easy fight though.
Wait, is the sidewinder free or something? How is that nothing to lose? I dont have the full game so I have no idea how ship loss works etc.

So I can just keep getting it blown up, no worries? Sweet. I take it any weapons or addons will get lost though.

Right. When you die you get the repurchase screen which lets you pay the insurance on the ship itself and any installed modules. The fallback option is the free starter sidewinder.

Regardless of whether you pay the insurance or not, your cargo will be lost. But with 4 tons of space, that's no biggy in a sidey. Losing 100 tons of cargo in my Type 6 however... ouch.

Hrm. Are there any good "value" weapons? Obviously wont be having the best shit, but anything that's cheap and reasonable enough to do bounties on would be nice.

What are my chances of getting a boxed copy of this?

Is there any word on whether or not any physical copies will be shipped to stores etc?

I had a quick google and it seems like there were boxed copies available from the website but have since sold out.

Everything I've read indicates zero plans for a physical retail release.

I preordered the game today and played the tutorial with my DK2. This was probably the best Oculus experience I have had to date. Loved every minute of it. Can anyone tell me what the button it is to recalibrate the camera on the keyboard or X360 game pad?

I cant wait to play the full game tomorrow. I just wish my Hotas would get here tomorrow too.

I'm confused. Didn't they launch the 2.00 gamma last week? What's special about Tuesday?

Is it just open for everyone instead of backers on Tuesday or is there additional content being released?

I mapped it to C on my keyboard, I dont know if its something that's mapped by default.

PM your paypal, I'll give ya the pound or whatever weird fascist currency that is.

Cheers mate, i just think i'll pass. Not sure what the exchange-rate is on paypal so it may be more than £1 (got £30 sitting there until payday :k) when paying in dollars.

[edit]it'd be £3 -_-

Slightly OT but do you know what time frame the Rift consumer module will be available if there even is was? Feels like there have been dev kits out for freaking years now lol. I want one! Morpheus is years away :'(

Okay, I need someone who really knows their HOTAS to provide an opinion. I'm looking at the following hardware:

X52 Pro
or
X55 Rhino
or
Thrustmaster T.16000m + CH Pro Throttle

My current setup is keyboard + T.16000m, I'm thinking about adding the CH Pro Throttle but I REALLY hate the Hat on the T.16000m which is pushing me towards selling it and just getting one of the X sets above. I don't want the CH Fighterstick since it has no Twist action.

The only problem with the X sticks is that I've heard that they aren't nearly as precise as the T.16000m, and that they have a huge deadzone or something like that.

Is the deadzone problem on the X series sticks bad enough that I should just stick with the T.16000m, and also, are the hats even much better on those sticks?

I have no experience with the T.16000m but I've tried both the x-52 and the x-55.

X-52 I feel has a more precise and better feeling flight stick, I tried all the variant springs on the X-55 and none of them felt as good as the X-52. However the X-55 has a much nicer throttle, more buttons, more hats, and no stop points for full throttle and no throttle.

So if you could find some kind of hybrid of the X-52's stick with the X-55's throttle you'd be gold. :p

Its been two years, and its basically experimental technology.

I get that. But limiting it just to devs now seems silly to me when there are so many demos and stuff out there for the consumers to try. I mean the more people who get to experience it the bigger the market will get right?!

I kind of understood at the start when it was just a tiny company with small production. But that isn't really the case now with Facebook and all that.

Well with Facebook's funding and access to personnel there is no reason for them to go to the community for testing anymore. We won't see another release until it's ready to hit retail.

I use the X55 for Elite and it's very, very precise. No idea where these massive deadzone rumours are coming from. I can scoop fuel and keep a very steady heat / scoop ratio, and this takes constant fine adjustments which I can do almost without the stick physically moving. It's quite sensitive.

I have also owned the X52 Pro in the past, but had to sell it when I emigrated. Out of the two I think I prefer the X55, though both are great. Feels a bit stiffer, a bit more real and a bit more expensive than the X52 Pro.

Had a lot of enjoyment with my Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 stick on the combat demo.

It's lack of buttons is really annoying, but the feel of it is so much better than my Cyborg-X.

Can I have a second stick plugged in and use that for other controls/buttons?

If you can afford it, go with the Thrustmaster Warthog. It's not the greatest for Elite Dangerous or Star Citizen because a lot of inputs are toggles, but the build quality and complete lack of deadzone makes it the greatest (it's also much stiffer than your HOTAS and it LACKS Z-axis twist so you need to buy pedals to get all 3 axes).

I'd gladly help out, not sure how useful I would be but just thought I'd chip in.

Ok guys, I'm well under way on the OT. But I'm a bit daunted by just how much information I need to cover without going completely overboard. If anyone would be interested in taking a look at what I have so far and helping out I would be appreciative. I'll contact Ichtyander, but I'm not sure if he's around or not. I want to get this up before launch!

Word of advice: Invest in a flightstick. You won't regret it.

Space sims are not meant for M+KB.

Absolutely, I'm going to make mention of that in the OT. You can definitely still play on a KM though. I'll reserve the second page for updates/videos and recommended peripherals

I just bought it and did a few of the training modules. I'm doing OK with 360 pad but would love a flight stick. Is there a flight stick that's not too expensive that you can rely on completely for flying? As in not needing to use the keyboard much at all apart from menus and setting your destination and stuff?

Definitely looking into that.

Had to change a few of the control settings around, now it's basically the same as my Star Citizen settings. Still trying to sort out the yaw setting, I heard I should be rolling and pitching instead.

ed: Yeah I see how this works.

It's coming soon. Months, not a few months, but many months. They just acquired two companies/teams who work on input and cameras. CES and GDC are soon so that's when we will have a better idea if that tech is ready or if there is likely to be another Dev kit and longer wait.

I moved across the Pacific a few months back and didn't think my TrackiR5 survived the journey. Found it today. Anyone know where I can get the TrackClip Pro and the base for the camera? I checked there website and was wondering if anyone knew cheaper solutions.

I'm assuming you could probably just make one yourself. As far as 3rd party... I really have no idea.

How would you guys explain Elite Dangerous, in a relatively concise way. (it's successes, and what it encompasses) I'm looking back at my What is Elite: Dangerous section... and it's definitely lacking for an opening statement of sorts.
