Mevius: Final Fantasy screenshots [Up: more screens and art]

I guess I'm going to be the odd man out and say I don't mind the design. Final Fantasy characters usually look weird, it's part of the series' charm to me.

The only part of his design I don't like is his boring face and hair. His hair is a bit better in the artwork but it's straighter and highly generic in game.

Otherwise I think his armor is fine and hearkens back to old Amano designs, which, the more whimsical and fantasy like, the better IMO. It has a little bit of a modern flair to it but this game looks to be more fantasy than modern which I love to see.
It looks nothing like Amano's design. The closest would be the style of his leg armor. His arm armor is too different in style(more complex designs) that don't match with the leg armor. And Amano would've given him a chest plate. Hell, he probably would've looked somewhat like this:

7mUYUCc.jpg

A crude mock up, I know, but I would've killed for a more Amano-looking character. In that interview with Kitase and Sakaguchi, Sakaguchi even pressures Kitase to make the character look more "Amano-ish".

I think they finally topped Luso's ridiculous design. I mean, a butt plate? Covering his bare behind? Attached by wire and a button like a winter coat? You can't make this stuff up.

It almost looks like a Buzzfeed parody of what female video game character designs would look like on a male character, but it's too ridiculous to be a parody.

Nah, they're still eons away from topping this.

Well it's definitely funny to see people realize what some girls may feel when constantly bombarded with ridiculously skimpy costumes/armor in games.

I wish I can work for this company. I can design the most gaudy and appalling characters imaginable and they will still pay me a good heap of money for the masterpiece.

I will agree that this guy is feeble competition when stacked next to that Tactics A2 abomination. It's designs like that that make me genuinely believe I can do a far better job for free.

Anyone remember that Final Fantasy game Grin were working on before they imploded? Cause some of environment shots really remind me of it

Mevius's hero looks nothing like Bartz. Most odd thing about Bartz is his underwear over his tights. Other than that, he's dressed nimble with little to no armor at all. Nomura did a perfect representation(I'm still in belief that out of all the artists hired to redesign Amano's art into workable pieces, Nomura's the BEST in retaining the closest representation to Amano's original):

I especially like some of the replies such as 'I like/am okay with sexy looking males but this one looks bad'.

It's clear how you guys have not been exposed enough. This is considered tame when it comes to the opposite sex and there are enough examples where it can go further, much further.

I wish we will get many more games with skimpy dressed guys that look so bad it doesn't make sense, that way you can see how annoying this shit can get.

I fully advocate sexy characters of both genders. I LIKE looking at hot guys.

This guy's outfit does not look good.

If I saw a female character in this, I would be equally revolted. It's just an awful character design. Is he meant to be quick? Or a heavy fighter? Or... what? What is up with the thigh armor? Why is he wearing spandex AND heavy armor? Why not one or the other? I would honestly prefer just spandex than this.

Like... why can't we go back to the good old days of FF? He can be wearing some kind of torn up sash thing and no shirt. I don't care. Throw the Lollipop Chainsaw outfit on him or something.

Not a fan of the character design but I'm ok with it if it's a take on generic female character design in fantasy games that just has them in "boob armour" and other revealing clothing when they should be warriors, but on a man.

I don't see the problem. He chose to wear this, because he's so confident that he doesn't need armour, so it's very empowering. Plus it's just stylized fantasy anyway.

Why are you guys such big prudes? You guys won't be happy until they all wear giant burkas! Stop censoring the artistic vision!
Bravo.

I want it to go further, but to also look nice at the same time. This particular outfit is ugly. I have no problem with sexy designs for male and female characters, but balance is the key. Just as female characters need to greatly expand beyond being constantly stuck in pandering outfits/roles in games, male character could definitely use a lot more sex appeal.

There's nothing wrong with experiencing fantasy through this medium, as long as it's balanced and lots of choice/variety is also offered. Variety is the spice of life.

I've always had a problem with the "We've gone through this shit for years, it's YOUR turn!!!" type of mentality. It never achieves anything positive and dissuades people far easier than persuades. Change does not occur through revenge, but understanding, and understanding can't be forced.

And I'm not really not totally drooling over over-sexualized females. If anything, practically dressed female characters are my thing, both as an artist(and lover of artistic design and style) and as a man(as far as sexiness is concerned, I prefer well dressed women over those who let it all hang out). Though, that being said, I don't have a problem with sexualized males, they just have to be done right. For instance, out of those pictures from Yoshida, I have the least problem with Ringabel. Despite being in his undies, his design is to the point and we thought out(balanced without horrible styled crap added on). Mevius hero, I think I'm more disgusted at the clash of styles(the more simple Amano-ish leg armor, the more complex, ornate arm armor, and the more modern tribal tattoos on his back and sword). Hell, I HATE his sword. Yes, it's not just his clothing, but the fuckin' sword is stupid looking.

That seems overdesigned but at least it looks cool imo.
If that's your thing, more power to you.

Luso is beyond ridiculous to me. An absolute travesty of design. (Plus I'm pretty sure Luso skinned the Grinch and has his hide attached to his overalls.)

I don't think this character's outfit looks good either tbh. I'm sure there are others out there who like it though.

There have been times where I used to visit some threads and say something similar, as in being okay with sexy designs but many don't look sexy or make sense (on girls), yet I was often met with hostility or not being understood.

I do understand your point of perspective, just I'm not used being put in that position if that makes sense. Your replies sound too familiar, you know?

It's a character design. Character design can stem from the desire to appeal to a certain audience, the personal tastes of a designer, the tone of a game, and from a number of other places. Claiming that this design is beyond the pale because it doesn't pass this specific metric for characterization or whatever inherently narrows the entire scope of design, and far more than is warranted. Your idea of "tackiness" is fine, but it's also ridiculous to impose it like a golden standard.

I actually think it's pretty nice to see this sort of male sexualization - the kind with no pretense of also functioning as some sort of power fantasy. It's not merely that I would like to see sexualization equalized across both genders. That's one way to make the industry more inclusive, but more to the point, I think attacking this rigid notion of masculinity is a more powerful way to accomplish that goal.

I think it's perfectly possible to attack the notion of rigid masculinity without resorting to putting men in completely ridiculous and impractical clothing purely to be titillating for young women. I'm not a fan of the character designs in FF XV, but at the very least the main characters wear clothes that actual human people wear. There's some clear sexuality to the designs, but not in such an overt manner that they overshadow everything else.

Beyond that though, context is important. This is the first major Final Fantasy title to be on available on iOS and Android, and it's clear that the game was made with a fairly high budget. It's a reasonably big game in a franchise that's decades old and has a very high pedigree in gaming history, which is the flagship franchise of one of the biggest publishers in the industry. The art design should be held to a higher standard than this.

It's not like that, it's ''ugh, why can't you understand or sympathize with us?!! We don't wish this on you, but you have been so selfish for such a long time when we try to communicate. Is this the only way for you to get it?".

It's great that you're not totally drooling over over-sexualized females along with others who have shared this opinion in this thread. Only thing is, you guys don't show up in female related threads. The majority of the replies defend this kind of design with weak excuses. You would think that the same people would be mostly cool with this design on males.

Anyway, I think that's enough of that. I hope the game is good. Those screens don't show enough of the gameplay.

Well, I can only speak for myself, but I definitely advocate for more variety for female characters in all aspects of gaming, and not just when it's convenient. But at the same time, of course I'm going to be most vocal about things that I am most directly interested in. In this case, seeing more sexy dudes. I'm a gay man who loves to play video games, so I'm gonna fly the "more beefcake" flag as much as I possibly can.

And I'm not gonna say though that I think all female characters in provocative outfits are wrong, because I don't believe that. I think there's a time and a place for it, just as I think there's a time and a place for oiled up studs in battle speedos. Then you balance these out with other characters of all types. (And in the case of female characters, a much stronger presence of non-pandering designs, as the scale has been tipped too far in the other other direction for way too long.)

Variety and choice are the most important aspects of any type of consumer medium IMO. There is no one size fits all solution, so the solution is to make as many sizes as you can! (And in this particular case, hopefully one that look a lot better.)

The camera angles in that screenshot make it look a lot like a Infinity Blade style game. I really hope it's not a shallow game like that.

I want to see some original mobile games with some meat. Something with the polish and overall depth of the games we get on 3DS.

I am bisexual and do not care if men or women are sexualized.

But if they are, at least make the outfits attractive. That shit is nasty.

I am straight and agree with all of this. I don't know what the fuck happened between the 90s and now but you can't count on Japan for good character design anymore.

That's still a hell of a lot closer than FFXV/VII/VIII. And less medieval than something like XII.

It isn't exact but I'll take it, and I'm excited to see more characters and more environments. That crystal picture in particular is gorgeous.

I might not like the way the character is designed(more to do with the styles and less sexualization), but the artwork and screens of the locations are nice. The crystal-fied castle, in particular, looks rad. I said in another thread, it reminds me of Baron castle, but expanded upon. The mote areas reminds me of a larger concept of Baron's.

Though, getting back to "designs I don't like", I don't care for the monsters. Particularly the horned ones(could they be Mevius's take on "Imps"?). They look too cartoony/goofy to me. The griffin looks fine and almost mysterious(seems to have crystal formations spiking out of it.

Looking at the screens, I'm wondering if crystallization will be a thing. What if a dreaded force is slowly enveloping the world in crystal? Pretty interesting concept.

I haven't seen a character look that fabulous since Isaac from Castlevania Curse of Darkness.

I actually like Isaac's look. I always considered him "lost in sin"(being an ultra loyal servant to Dracula, one of two disciples taught the forbidden arts of Devil Forging from the Dark Lord himself, and a herald of chaos) and his look to be Ayami Kojima's take on making a "male" succubus(since her female succubi are also very sexual and leather-bound).
