Why does it have to be a bear

Probably because beside bears there is nothing menacing in any part of Siberia. Well wolfs maybe but they kinda afraid humans usually.

...Yeah, I'm expecting a lot of human enemies in this one.

So 2 rooms then?

There were a lot more than that, but the video linked on the previous page shows they're keeping the same balance of 2013's game anyway, so not much improvement there. I'm liking the sound of the world overall at least, and maybe the survival elements will matter more this time.

I think Xbox exclusivity helps Sony, in way there are no competition for Uncharted for months, so all PS4 only owners buy UC for their adventure needs, play it through, some MP and then buy TR when it comes out.

I might be wrong but Tomb Raider as a multi title didn't sell as much as Uncharted 2 or 3.

U4 will sell huge, a possible version of Rise wouldn't affect it even if was launched on the same day.

Those shots look great! Her face especially is quite fantastic!

I'm also very glad that she's appropriately dressed this time around. Her going around the mountains in the first game with a damn sleeveless vest was ridiculous!

Bears are the greatest creatures on the planet. Bear cubs especially. So cute.

I mean... look at those noble ass creatures!

Man, when I was a very small child I used to have this teddy bear which got me into the idea that bears are not dangerous. YOU'RE NOT HELPING.

Her alternate outfits were often a better fit, though I liked how here default outfit got more worn through the course of the game. Maybe we'll get some more options earlier this time.

Last time I saw a bear cub on TV it was being cannibalized by another bear that had been struggling to find food. Nope.

I am not sure but I think there are some tigers and leopards. They populations are small though so it would be a shame to kill them in new Tomb Raider.

The reboot absolutely had light Metroidvania elements. If they go more in that direction I'll be very excited.

TR 2013 was about as similar to a true Metroidvania style game as that $12 bottle of red wine I purchased my sister is to a Château Margaux French Bordeaux Yr. 2000.

The game was super linear, held your hand essentially the entire time to an embarrassing degree and had like a few quick diversions to 'challenge tombs' so offensively simple that my mouth runs dry even calling them 'tombs' or a 'challenge' in the same sentence. Gross.

Saying it had "Light" Metroidvania elements is extremely generous to what TR2013 was actually doing in other words. I'm not so charitable to say the least.

I hope this new Tomb Raider game does have actual Metroidvania elements, and actual puzzles worth a damn and de-emphasizes all the me-too combat and has actual platforming that you can't fall asleep during and has real, "complex" Tombs. I'm a genuine true blue Tomb Raider fan, so I have more investment than anyone in hoping it actually starts to take itself seriously and stops caring how shitty modern gamers are and just makes it a goddamn crucible.

I just won't be holding my breath based on past evidence. I'm betting we'll get yet another game that wishes it was 1000 other modern games. And if it does continue the downward spiral of TR2013, I have but one wish for this sequel. I'll be watching extremely closely to say the least.

Yeah, I was hoping the reboot would have actual Metroid-vania elements. I think they could actual work pretty well in a TR game. Now I think they did have the gear in place to pull it off, but it was almost always used in the next section the linear game/story was pushing you into. So take the stuff you had like the rope arrows and torch upgrades, etc. and add more. Like a swimming apparatus that let you go further underwater. Maybe some boots that let you bound between walls. In general if they could add some platforming moves to the "gear-gating" I think that'd be cool. Like a grapple that could be upgraded from simply swinging across gaps to then running on walls. Maybe these are all bad ideas, but you get the point. Some of these would also go towards adding depth to platforming which the reboot was in desperate need of. These could all be used to make better environmental puzzles too if used properly.

The key then is to make backtracking with them actually worthwhile and not funnel you in the direction you need to go or have it just open the next section of the game that you hadn't been to. Make it so you return to areas to fully explore for actual progress in the story, not just so you can open a door and break a new box of salvage.

Waiting for the day that TR has Far Cry-style fire propogation.

My enemies will all burn to death.

Also, I hope no more father figures/males in love with Lara die to save her in this one.

By the time Alex bit it, it was starting to get really weird.

My issue is my BS senses are already going haywire. Tomb Raider was already a checklist game design title wherein they had to have upgrades and experience and shit like that, and most of it was utterly useless in any strategic sense. It was just blindly select whatever and move on with it, since it's not like the game offered any real reason to care. It was too simple.

But the game already seems to be expanding the checklist. Now we have to hunt to craft new survival gear!

I'm sure it's got every check

[√] RPG Elements
[√] Crafting System
[√] Play-itself Platforming with 'windows of error' large enough to drive trucks through
[√] "Cinematic Set Pieces" ala Uncharted's collapsing building
[√] Long climbing segments with ledges that conveniently break the second you leap off them
[√] Combat Arenas ("Defeat all enemies in area to proceed")
[√] QTEs
[√] Brutal finishing Moves
[√] Melodramatic story with writing equivalent to a seventh grader fanfiction
[√] Glowing markers that tell you exactly where you need to be at any moment
[√] A huge arsenal of overpowered and poorly balanced weaponry against a legion of brainless enemies

What are you talking about, man?

Board blocking my way I need shotgun to break?

Oh man I got shotgun, now I can break that board!

That's totally like Metroidvania. I mean, nevermind that I never had to backtrack, ever, and that everything was given to me within the story and I never had to go find it. No, that isn't relevant.

What's important here is the concept that there was something in my way, and then I got an ability/weapon to bypass the obstacle. I mean, like, immediately when I needed it. Not like, I had to explore or anything. Not like, I ran into an area where I needed a shotgun and couldn't progress, or needed a zipline and had to go to an area where I could go because of the shotgun.

Is there a keyboard shortcut for dem check marks? I'm sure I'll have good use for them :D

On topic, I'm actually okay with that checklist except for the story. The rest don't bother me. The combat mechanics are good and the weapons are serviceable. I'm not too worried about minor niggles like finishing moves, glowing markers, rpg elements or QTEs. Build a good story with memorable characters. Throw in some deep and satisfying puzzles while you are at it and I'm sold.

I just bought this Game of the Year Edition for the first game on 360 a few weeks ago and I'm still earl on in it. Finding some enjoyment so far but it's almost funny how quickly it gets brutal. Should be an interesting read when I finish the first one.

Yup. Its a sad shitshow. Lets hope the next Hitman turns out decent. It wont be as good as it used to be though, same with Tomb Raider. They are just chasing the big aaa bucks and dont give a shit about actual challenge or skill.

I am so confused on the Metroidvania comparisons. Could the game perhaps be less linear? Sure, and if so, that is not even close to being a Metroid game.

Hubs man. It's the hubs and the freedom to roam around in them. That's what makes people go out and say that TR is Metroidvania, and the Arkham games. There's also the fact that as Lara gains more power she can open up the hubs even further. Yeah, it's a bit reductionist, but you can sort of see where they're similar in parts.

And, anyways, Tomb Raider is leagues ahead of any Metroidvania I've ever played.

Every Zelda is actually a Metroidvania!

Are they using the same actress for Lara this time around because I am playing the Definitive Edition right now and the VO is painful.

Is it a american actress trying to do a British accent or something?

MAJOR SPOILER ALERT IN THAT TOMB RAIDER VIDEO:

Lara does not die

lol

Didn't take notes, but it was mostly wishy-washy stuff about how it will be bigger and better. Things that stood out to me:

  • You will need to hunt certain kinds of animals to upgrade some weapons
  • There will be opportunities to evade combat by sneaking around bushes, rooftops or swimming
  • They haven't reduced the amount of combat and shooting in the game

More hyped for this than Uncharted, weirdly. Can't wait!

I think I'm still more excited for Uncharted but Tomb Raider definitely did some things way better than Uncharted had. The stealth was much better and I absolutely loathe how the end of Uncharted games have enemies that are straight up bullet sponges that can kill you in 1-2 fast hits. It gets really frustrating.

Either way, I'm really looking forward to both.

Batman is quite a bit better as a Metroidvania.

Oh great so its still a fun SHOOTBANG affair, not an actual adventure game with puzzles and ya know, TOMH RAIDING

It was never going to be about Tomb Raiding ever again after the reboot sold millions and many fans keep saying they don't want to waste their time having to think when they get stuck on a puzzle or didn't know where to go.

The next time someone mentions metroidvania in context of this game, I will buy a puppy and kick it.

Yeah did't really care much for that. But the magazine preview did say they will focus more on multi-room puzzles. Hope that's not just lip service.

What "fans"? ? Fans of this new homogenised AAA shootaton?

I guess we should just make all games shootathons that go from A to B. To be honest I kinda hope this game sells like shit so we can get a better Tomb Raiddr game out of it.

Im so sick of these classic games getting turned to shit so the general shit eating public can enjoy their bitesized gameplay rolled up into a big linear story that takes the hero through an "emotional" rollercoaster.

Look at what they tried with Hitman, same thing.

Sorry for the rant.

Yeah, I've seen it in tons of threads about the game, and about puzzles and challenge in general in games. It sticks out specifically about this game since I care so much about the franchise, though.

Thought it wasn't much of a spoiler considering the fact that Tomb Raider is a lucrative franchise for the publishers.

I see it but don't think the comparison is valid. That means near all games are Metroidvania, where unlockables allow you to continue progress through use. And I don't like the Metroid games, never did. It's just my preference, but I liked Tomb Raider, Batman.
