Xenoblade Chronicles X "Direct" on Feb. 6 [info in OP]

These impressions are excellent, thanks so much! Seems right up my alley. Only thing I might have reservations about is the combat (not too too fond of auto attack systems) as I prefer real-time action combat but I think I can overlook that easily because it sounds like every other aspect is great.

The Xenoblade combat is very involved with combo-effects extending past your own attacks to your party's attacks as well, positioning and now even limb-targeting. You should barely be noticing that you characters are auto-attacking for the most part since you'll be executing commands or repositioning yourself the whole time. Takahashi said in Famitsu that in this game they sped up the combat system as a sort of half-step to a pure action combat system which the team wants to try but didn't feel confident enough yet to implement it into this game. So no need to worry that you'll be staring at cooldowns trying not to fall asleep ;)

Good stuff. Never played the original so I was worried i'd be stuck with the blandest looking character ever lol
Some of the armor in the original was awesome but some were... not so cool. At least in this one they appear to have put more care in the cloths... an example of the Treehouse stream:

Does the creator have the ideology that certain species will evolve differently and faster then other species as some geneticist claim. That would explain some normal eyes and big eyes. Or am I reaching?

Hehehe, in the Treehouse Stream they said that some characters like Elma or the Avatar have cybernetic eyes which explains why some of the eye desing looks weird, there is even an option to give yourself a Byakugan =P

Oh really? Games usually have consistency in regards to humanoids.

Either way I am in. I skipped the Treehouse and I am on a partial media blackout for the game since I plan on purchasing it. But at least there is an option.

I just about lost my shit when the traversal with the mech started. Exploring new worlds is my favorite thing to do in games, and this just looks absolutely monumental in that respect. Plus, the Wii U's library has been really action-oriented up to now, so I can't wait to just sit back and be rewarded for finding bitchin' views.
.

Those vistas!

That flying exploration!

Can't! Words!

This view from the E3 2013 trailer is probably the highest we've ever gotten. It shows that you can indeed see other zones from your current location. Since they said they want it to be seamless, I'm guessing you'll be able to fly there no problem

I'm guessing the narrow connecting areas are a clever hack in this regard. Give the game engine some time to crank up textures/assets for the next area, while keeping some of the previous ones around in case the player turns back.

The 5 continents shown look massive and I would be completely satisfied if they were the entire game world. However, put me in the camp that doesn't think they are. I just don't think they would show off the entire world pre-release. I expect more areas will be in, either as places that you can only visit temporarily (which there are a few of in the original Xenoblade), as whole new continents (like these areas) that were previously unknown, or as other celestial bodies apart from Mira (such as that moon or another planet).

-2:27: This sounds a lot like pop music, but this isn't inherently bad. This piece is actually quite good for creating an upbeat and bright atmosphere, but I wonder how it will be used in the game with the vocals. Maybe a city? Some high sung notes around 3:18 make me think it will be cutscene only, though.

-5:39: Sounds very sci-fi-ish, but nothing I'd want to listen to outside of the game. The "oohooh"-vocals that you can hear after a few seconds don't fit imo, neither for area music, nor for cutscene music.

-7:00: I guess this is rather for upbeat scenes, but this rather reminds me of licensed music in video games. I love playing bass, so I like the short bass solo around 7:48 as a musician but I think this is unfitting for video game music. I don't know what happens after 8:20. This might be good for a song you hear in the radio or in a music bar, but for a video game? Unfitting, imo. This piece also loops, which makes it sound like it's not necessarily for a cutscene...

I think we may have to rethink what is typical "game" music to really wrap our heads around this soundtrack, or perhaps accept that we'll be disappointed. But I think it's clear Sawano, Takahashi, and co. are going for a very very different style that will be aggressively challenging our notions of what is typical for a medium like this. While we don't know for sure, evidence is building with each trailer that vocals will be used generously throughout the soundtrack, perhaps even in field music.

I really get the impression, from both the music as well as the character models and other unique features, that Nintendo is giving Takahashi free reign to design after the success of Xenoblade. You'd think that the anime influences would raise all sorts of red flags over at Nintendo, but instead Takahashi has Sawano and Tanaka going all out because he loves their work and he doesn't care what people think of that, especially not western gamers. Takahashi is building a unique game, and we can either stop and question his decisions or hop on for the ride, because he's not stopping for anyone either way.

Tried to watch the direct, but my browser started acting up at around the 12 minute mark.

Also god Lyn's voice is terrible, hope the localization has a far more bearable voice.

Would be awesome if you could buy your own house/furnitures/etc. and have your own doll in a garage (just an idea).

I really hope there are daily quests and monthly events to make me keep playing this game for a long period of time.

I love EVERYTHING about this game. I've never felt this way before about a game.

I don't have a rich history with the composers of JRPGs, but understand the passion.

Hearing Sawano is the guy that has been doing attack on titan (great stuff and the music is great) and that they snagged him for Xeno seems a big deal. I also think the music he's coming up with for the trailers and the gameplay is pretty solid. I think he'll shine further on release. It has a more contemporary feel to the music in Xenoblade.

I like where the music is heading for this release.

I hope Space Rihanna is a pre-set option, her bone structure gives me a lot of faith in the amount of customization available.

Be careful what you wish for... Even if they didn't add any new content, you'd still be playing this game for a VERY long period of time.

I didn't watch the video so that I don't spoil myself too much, but I listened to the music because I couldn't resist as a musician

All in all, I've got to say I'm disappointed. On one hand the music captures the sci-fi-ness of the world very well, but on the other hand there is nothing that really stands out with a "Wow"-like effect. Nothing I'd want to listen to outside of the game, except for maybe 2 or 3 pieces. And I'm not very fond of the frequent use of singing here. If done right, it can compliment the music, but for me that's not the case here.
The previously released tracks are not bad, but they also contain sometimes grave mistakes from a composition perspective that just made me shake my head, even after listening to them for like the 30th time.
There will be many parts where the music compliments the game very well, but I think there also will be parts where it even drags down the game. And the thought that this might happen in this game kind of makes me sad as someone who loves and primarily listens to video game music.

I think you need to wait until the tracks are uploaded individually tbh. I also don't think there should be a limit to what VG music should sound like. I love it when unique tracks come out of left field.

All we know is Takahashi said he's been a fan of Sawano for a while and wanted to ask him.

The amount of amazing composers that have worked on the Xeno series confounds me: Mitsuda, Kajiura, Shimomura, ACE+, Kiyota, Shinji Hosoe and now Sawano.

With such talented people onboard and such great results for each game, you have to wonder why he felt the need to change from project to project... O_O.

Takahashi does what Takahashi wants to do. In one Xenoblade interview, Shimomura actually got frustrated from his demands lol. He seems to be specific in what he wants, but his management alongside the quality of the composers has provided consistently good music since Xenosaga 3.

Thought I'd add that I think the music is more appealing to a western audience then some have mentioned.

I can't help but see the influence of Pacific Rim and Attack on Titan in Xenoblade Chronicles X. I actually think the music leverage's the western sensibilities I'm getting from the setting and tone.

I could be off the mark but it seems significantly more relevant than perhaps the compositions some had in mind?

Yeah no doubt about that, but since games like this don't come out very often, I wouldn't mind some new content in the future!

Exactly what I was thinking when they were showing the residential area. I imagined having my own batcave/workshop in the basement and your doll flies out through the pool or something in the backyard

Looks like quests reward exp, gold, equipment, and/or some kind of gem like items. This makes me happy.

Zus Mop-up(ズース掃討) - Subjugation(討伐) - 1*

Pathfinder - Primordial Wilderness

We’re worried native creatures will interfere with the installation of a data probe. We’d like you to get rid of some Brass Zus.

10 Inner exp, 1500 gold, Melee Accuracy Up 2

Seems like the gems are coming back. Good.

This quest also basically confirms that generic stuff is back =X

Also, wtf is Inner exp?

Finally got a chance to watch all 24 minutes. I'm liking it a lot. The special bundle has only been announced for Japan right? I need this bundle to jump in.

I think you level two things separately - your inner level (innate attributes, str/def/mag etc.) and your class level (abilities specific to your job).

Hmmm, could be.

I hope they give out details on the classes soon then (I don't think the treehouse showed them, did it?)

Yeah many of the quests seem pretty basic at least to start. Find an item so a ring can be made, kill some monsters, collect some ingredients for a meal. report to blade (story likely). One of the rewards is Discount Jeans. It's Xenoblade, make no mistake about it.

They went over the basics.
Huh, I thought it would be similar to stuff like jobs from FF, not a skill tree =P

Cool. I hope they detail it in the future.

Yeah... I was keeping hopes up, but I guess this is still Xenoblade, good and bad.

Also, thanks for the link.

Info about the two races shown and some of the dialogue.

The Ma Non(マ・ノン人), alternatively: Ma Nonites/Nonanites/Nonners

Alien race with advanced technological capabilities(高度な科学力を持つ異星人)

They love pizza(ピザが好き)

more dialogue[this probably isn’t 100% accurate]:

Tatsu: These are the Ma Non, a pacifist race/group of aliens.(このマ・ノン人は、平和主義の異星人ですも)

[seems to be from an actual scene, now]

Middle MaNon:EEEEK! An alien!(キャアァーー!異星人よ!)

Right MaNon:That Nopon is take-out! Stick him in a lunchbox.(それもノポンをテークアウト!お弁当につれてるね。)

Tatsu: How rude! Tatsu not belong in lunchbox. This Earthperson here be Tatsu’s attendant.(失礼ですも!タツはお弁当じゃないですも!この地球人は、タツのお供ですも。)

Lyn: ...Attendant?(・・・お供?)

Tatsu: Ah! No! Tatsu mean...friend[the joke doesn’t really work in English, o-tomo is attendant, o-tomodachi is friend]. B-but aside from that, Lyn, the Ma Non have some amazing technology.(ひっ!いやぁ!お・・・おとも・・・だちですも。そんなことよりリンさん、マ・ノン人は、すごい科学力を持っていますも)

Lyn: Advanced technology?! The mechanic in me is suuuuuuuper curious![not entirely sure what she said, too much spazzing](高度な科学力?!メカニックとして_好奇心がぁー!)

Tatsu: [not sure, something about Earthlings like Lyn and the Ma Non, and there being nonpeaceful aliens too]リっ、リンさんのような地球人や、マ・ノン人のような、平和できない異星人ばかりだといいんですけれども・・・とんでもないやつらもいますも。

The Bias/Byers/Vyers(バイアス人)

Warlike alien race(好戦的な異星人)

What’s beneath their mask is a mystery(マスクの下は謎)

Tatsu: These guys be Vyers(こいつらバイアス人ですも。)

B-dawg: Earthlings. Annihilate. [something](地球人。皆殺しだ。そうめいじられている。)

Tatsu: They just said they be planning to massacre Earthlings. And Tatsu bet they want eat him too! Terrible! UNACCEPTABLE!(地球人を皆殺しにすると言っていますも。それにタツを食べようとしたですも!ひどいですも。許せないですも!)

Lyn: Hmm...maybe because you smell like food.(んん・・・食の臭味はあおかもしれない)

Tatsu: Lyyyn, don’t be saying such things! (リーンさん、そんな事言っているばいじゃないですも)

Edit: Tatsu seems a lot like Riki in the things he says.
