What? I still use that. :(

They haven't updated their desktop client in ages, it's borderline broken with iTunes (and iPods) and they pretty much don't seem to care about that. I guess it's just on life support, wouldn't be surprised if one day scrobbling will just fail because they pulled the plug on the servers without notice.

Kinda sucks that there is no real alternative where I can scrobble all of my devices to.

I dunno, it still works fine for me (I'm using iTunes on OS X and iPods touch/Classic).

Also, their desktop client isn't that old, is it? I mean, they basically had to update it after people got access to user accounts due to their stupid authentication methods...

Not technically a website but way back in the day, it was the place to go to download shareware games, web browsers, linux distros, and other free utilities. The id software section eventually became the main attraction of the site, hosting not only the games but also tons of custom maps and tools for hacking Doom, Quake, and their sequels.

Tucows was another one.

Oh man I totally forgot about Lycos. I used to use that all the time back in the day.

edit: You all might be too young for this one, but Happypuppy was the biggest video game site on the net for a while. That site is dead too.

Man, kids these days probably don't even know how to use a proper FTP server >.>

It used to be a pre-sleeping ritual for me to go there, had my own personal list and everything. Then I just kinda stopped. I've gone back a handful of times since and it's so empty now.

I think the end of the special weekly tourneys was part of what killed it, that and too much over-abundance of x-tiers

Oh god I remember that. GOAT.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
Goddamn. That website hasn't changed at all since I last went there something like 12 years ago.

And it loads just as fast as it used to. I was on dialup.
I remember I had a class where the teacher wanted us to use NeoPets for a class project where we took care of pets.

The first day, everyone logged in, discovered that the limited stock in stores meant that you couldn't take care of your pets, and then just proceeded to play games.

The teacher had said that we could use NeoPets whenever we wanted, and was then later shocked, shocked, that everyone just fucked off in class and played NeoPets games.

I like to use Google trends fot that.

WWWF Grudge Match was brilliant while it lasted, and is remarkably still online ten years after closing up shop. Basically the grandfather of Celebrity Deathmatch, and its modern descendants like Death Battle and Epic Rap Battles of History.

Genmay.com

I was a super active member in college and shortly after. They had a really large community, fun group. We had LAN parties, meetups, met a girl on there that I had a "relationship" with for a while and a lot of fun in general. I remember being downtown Minneapolis, out drinking with friends when I hear "Huuuuuuxxllleeyyy", went up and talked to a dude, he recognized my face from the forum and had a ridiculously hot chick with him, pretty funny experience.

Not sure when it ended up dying out. I think the core group was 18-25 year olds, we all just got older, got out of college and just matured I guess. I'll always look back fondly on those days.

Hardforum.com

Was pretty big back in the day. Genmay.com was made after Hardforum shut down their forums due to the amount of hassle it was to run. Met a lot of cool people there as well. I remember a guy coming to my apartment to setup my Comcast account. He said my setup looked real familiar and asked if I posted on Hardforum, he totally recognized my 22 inch CRT, small small world.

Lots of good memories in those communities.

The Best Page in the Universe. Shit was hysterical when I was like 16. My friends and I would wait impatiently for an update. Then I got a little older and found it really stupid.

Also, I've never seen a site like YTMND and Digg fall so hard and fast from grace. I was part of that Digg exodus back in the day and it was during a time where I hated reddit because of it's god awful layout.
