Chelsea fans prevent black man boarding Paris metro train

Didn't see it mentioned, but the guy on the receiving end of the abuse has spoken about the incident.

He's reported it to French police and talks about why he didn't report it before the video appeared.. There should an article on the BBC News website if anyone's interested. (Apologies I can't link, I'm on my phone and read the article through the app)

He wants them locked up - hopefully it happened. Can't imagine they'd feel too clever inside a French prison.

Here's a contemporary version from before the game in Paris:

Honestly generally the last place you want to be is in a train with football fans.

Still, I might have waited and punched that guy in the front in the dick just before the door closed.

Mitchell McCoy, a 17-year-old Chelsea fan who was also on the train, has spoken to a number of media outlets defending the incident, claiming there was no racism involved. He told LBC: “The carriage was full up, there was no room for him to get on and he tried to force himself on. He was really aggressive, pushing himself. I’d say it was self defence, pushing him off.”

Asked whether the pushing and chanting were connected, he said: “No of course it wasn’t connected. The press are trying to make something out of nothing.”

Jesus Christ.

That kid has a bright future in the PR industry.

Yeah, we're real animals. You take you life in your hands coming down here for a match...

Cardiff and Swansea have obviously done a lot of work to curb certain elements and improve their family image. That's the sort of work that clubs up and down the country do, and has obviously been aided immensley in both the Welsh clubs case by moves to new stadiums and recent Premier League exposure.

But lets save the snark. Ninian Park and The Vetch were both notoriously "tricky" grounds and in my experience both sets of away supporters are among the more.. lets call it "boystrous" sets on the road. In my personal experience of watching football home and away for 20 years they're right up there, albeit just in the category below Millwall and Leeds.

As for that Mitchell McCoy piece, well that says it all. He's a 17 year old kid. Probably posted his experience from that train on Instagram under "Casual Culture" or some other trite bollocks. I'm not defending hooliganism in any variety or to any extent, but a lot of the old timers from the 70's and 80's would probably have given him a clip themselves. These kids perceived outlook on being a "hooligan" or a "casual" is laughably warped and pathetic. It's embarassing.

Chelsea's best players at the moment are mostly White. Let's not start peddling falsehoods for the sake of positive discrimination.

I don't think the poster was referring to their skill. The "TM" makes me think he is referring to the phrase racist/bigeots like to use so they can keep their racist viewpoints after meeting someone that doesn't fit the stereotype. Like "Oh, you're one of the good black(Jewish, gay, Mexican, etc) people. Not like all the others".

It's crazy but it happens more than you would think.

Wow, I lived in London for a year and I never saw anything like that. Crazy.

Well there were some illegal BNP protests but they were busy dodging the police.

There seem to be two Londons. The "London" you see and the London I see. I'm a black man born, bred and lived all of my life in this City.

That Chelsea fan is almost definitely doing it in reference to the nazi use of that salute (as in a far-right, BNP, EDF, neo-nazi like context), the guy you quoted is linking Di Canio and that other fascistic element without basis.
Either way, there is outrage. Though for a load of people to air such disgust here would just be met with #notallChelseafans, whataboutism and a flurry of anecdotal dismissal. Not all necessarily unwarranted, mind, but none of it will further the conversation in this thread at all.

thanks for clearing up things about fascims at football events. i understand what your saying.

Yh I figured that out afterwards. My sarcasm detector was broken at the time!

Some interesting stuff here showing arrests for racist chanting have been going down gradually.

Also banning orders for fans giving racial abuse as of last September.

This list isn't specific to racism.

Nice swift response from Chelsea and exactly what we all want to see.

Three temporary suspensions with the potential for more pending the Paris police's findings. And tickets to the victim and his family for the second match, because he's clearly going to want to sit in a stadium with his kids, surrounded by Chelsea fans after this.

Welp. The shitstorm continues and will even get political now.

Also turns out he went to a £11,500 per term Public School and he now works for the Business and Commercial Finance Club in central London.

Funny thing is the guy in question looks a bit Mediterranean in his appearance, there are some super-racists that would probably be racist to him haha.

I think it is hilarious that Farage is trying to distance himself from the soccer yob. I mean really.

Jesus Christ.
The same idiot also tweeted that he loves his racist captain. (McCoy)

He has the audacity to say it was not the colour of his skin yet the chants were targeting his skin, and the train wasn't that packed that 1 guy couldnt to get on. People shuffle around and make space. Also, you never push people off a train, so thats not a justified action anyway.

I am utterly shocked that this man, employed by a human rights organisation, felt no apparent need to bring up his presence at this particular breach of human rights, at least not until his face was on the news making him look quite bad.

Shocked, I tell you.

Being from the U.S. but a student of history who spent lots of time and a thesis on race relations (Chicago in the 1920's, so I have no business trying to interpret European racism )

That being said it seems to me.... and please help me Euro GAF that race relations continue to heat up over there.

A former policeman accused of being involved in an alleged racist incident with Chelsea football fans on the Paris Metro has apologised.

Richard Barklie, who was one of three men police sought after a black man was allegedly pushed off the train by chanting football supporters, has insisted he is not a racist.

Video posted online showed commuter Souleymane Sylla being pushed back onto the platform as some of those on the train chanted "we're racist, we're racist and that's the way we like it".

Mr Barklie, 50, who was a member of the Royal Ulster Constabulary and a Police Service of Northern Ireland officer, is currently a director of the World Human Rights Forum.

It's really hard to grasp the level of cognitive dissonance for people to be caught on camera doing something racist, while chanting "I am a racist! Fa la la la That's how I roll!", to then claim that they are not racist.

At least when internet racists, homophobes, and misogynists get called out they hide behind the flimsy, "it's just trolling" defense. Here it's just blatant, "Uh, that video you saw? Didn't happen."

Nah, not really. It DOEs get reported more heavily than it used to, as it's becoming clear that the average person has no time for shit like this.

May vary depending on the country in question, Europe is a big place and varies a tonne.

Yeah sorry for using the "Europe" reference. France seems to come up a lot in US news? Is it true that the race tensions are pretty high there right now?

I feel that this incident has been blown up way to much. I wouldn't dispute that the chanting appears racist or claim that these fans are a charming bunch of individuals, but I think the commuter involved had a big part to play in the incident, and he has been milking it since.

You would have to be completely mad, or trying to be provocative to try and squeeze on to a full metro carriage packed full of English football fans. I suspect the latter. Its not a racial thing, there is no way I would have tried to get on that carriage. I think the chanting started after he had been trying to force his way on. And he has been coming or with all this stuff about how it it had made him scared of travelling on metro etc I just don't believe him and I think he is loving the attention. If he uses a bit of common sense it won't happen again. Football fans are noisy and easy to avoid.

Victim blaming in its purest form.
You might have noticed others who were already in that carriage and not part of the mob getting off in disgust/fear as well, I suppose this is partly their fault too, eh?

Mental gymnastics. The post.

Good lord. People are chanting they are racist and someone has the courage to come here and say it is not racist. Carriage was just full. And the victim should have known better than entering a train full of football fans.

Geez.
