The Order: 1886 |OT| Gears of Yore

I liked it too, especially once I realized you had full movement control and there were environmental weapons. I just wish the dodge prompts weren't on screen and were up to the player to read the movements.

The attack buttons needed tweaking too. L1 worked sometimes and not others, even R1 and R2 wouldn't always work even though you could see the window. And this was one of the scenes where the framing was not right for picking up environmental objects. There was that floating dot that wasn't clear where exactly the object is and you just randomly move Galahad around until it became a triangle. And that meant you were looking for a prompt on screen instead of having your eyes on the lycan

Can you elaborate on what you mean by this? As in Galahad can move around the environment during the QTE fights? And by enviornmental weapons, do you mean objects etc he can use, or just the pre-canned stuff where Galahad is thrown in to tables or whatever. I did wonder what that little white dot was for lol.

According to my source the game sold close to 20k units in Germany. Can't verify that number myself though. Considering PS4's installed base Sony shouldn't be too thrilled about that. Maybe, even with all the negative or neutral reviews, the game will have legs though.

Well, RAD already bested ND when it comes to graphics and gunplay, which is pretty impressive coming from a handheld studio on their first next-gen attempt.

All they have to do is get the pacing & gameplay systems better defined

It's yet to be seen if RAD going to beat ND when it comes to graphics.
As for gunplay i found TLOU to be better so they don't have them beat for that either .
In fact after playing The Order i am convince that UC going to look better because of setting and animation .

I highly doubt this game will have legs to much going against it .
More people will play it thanks to the second hand market.
Still that is no help to Sony or RAD since it has no DLC or MP they can get money from .

They had one object per fight that you could pick up from the ground. That was the floating dot. It becomes triangle when you get above it. The thing is, you don't exactly know where it is because the scene is framed to cut off most of the floor. So you are feeling your way around. Ultimately it's just a single use optional canned animation

The camera being so close sometimes hurt the game play.
I found this even more so for the lycan battles.

Yeah that's true as well. I so badly wish they created a hybrid between Super Punch-Out and a straight up fighting game.

Really? Just use the crossbow, there's enough supply in the level to take out all the guards. Once I realized that after 2 failures, this section was actually rather nice.

I had no problems with any stealth sections in this game. The only time I had a problem was when I was impatience. Other than a couple of failures I did them quite easily.

I see. Well, I'm not sure how will it was made clear, because I never even picked the damn thing up lol. Something to try out the next time I do it I guess.

Is that including pre-orders? 1886 had over 250k pre-orders in USA, I'd expect around 600k or so sales in North America first week so Germany only having 20k would be pretty bizarre.

and yeah the secondary market is going to be brutal on this game since there isn't really any reason to keep it and with a < 15 hour game lots of people are going to trade it into gamestop/best buy/amazon ASAP. I already traded mine into Best Buy and got $44 for it. RAD should have announced a big story DLC at launch to get a few people at least to keep their copies.

Completed it last night, took me around 7 - 8 (maybe even 9) hours on hard, didn't manage to find everything so no plat :( I'll have to play it again to find all the things I missed (I'm looking forward to it).

Absolutely stunning game with fantastic sound. I don't mind QTEs, I loved Heavy Rain and most of Beyond: Two Souls. Hope they do another one.

If I had to rate it, I'd give it a solid 8 / 10.

Hope they hurry with photo mode!

Or just like god of war. That would have worked so well. Would mean far deeper mechanics, but could have been so rewarding

Considering how tightly they wanted to control the look of the scene, free movement and hack/slash game mechanics were probably off the table.

I totally get why they chose that particular framework for the fight, they just needed to flesh it out and add some more branching possibilities within the fight. Throw some combos in there, visual cues for blocking/dodging instead of button prompts, and a two to three stage fight with the boss increasing aggressive tactics.

Yeah it wasn't clear at all. That whole sequence was the only portion in the whole game where all the mechanics felt broken. Check kinda funny's review. Greg ended up spamming R2 the whole time because he had no idea when it will work

Been thoroughly enjoying reading this thread. I have to say that the great majority of impressions given seem to make a mockery of some of the negative reviews.

Isn't that the biggest gripe everyone has with the game? May be they should revisit that objective and see if it's worth the compromise. They should try mixing it up, with full control during gameplay and the occasional cinematic angle to separate different stages of the boss fight. That way you get the best of both worlds.

Definitely. I'm actually ready to pull the trigger on a purchase, I think. I can snag it for $42 at BB with GCU and my welcome coupon. I just may do it.

Yeah I'd say the general impressions put this game at 7-7.5/10. That feels about right to me as well...below a 6.5-7 seems ridiculous to me.

It's a throughly enjoyable game if you go into it with the right mindset. I personally loved it, it's got flaws but nothing that can't be fixed in a sequel.

Maybe I am alone, but I think there is a ton of replayability in this game. To use a movie comparison there are may movies I pop in just to watch a certain standout scenes again and The Order is perfect for this. Could easily see myself replaying some of the chapters in this game for the same reasons. Like the elder lycans, the airship, the bridge, I really enjoyed the shipyard.

I agree. I've already replayed the airship level twice.

I think they should try and find a balance. I would rather them not abandon too much of their vision, just make some better compromises in a few areas. I personally liked how cohesive the overall feel of the game was.

The gunplay mechanics were great, but better encounter design similar to TLOU would have made much better use of them.

Thinking about the Elder Lycan battle again, I think it would be cool if they worked with a Bloodborne type of system as well...a solid lock-on, with a more tactical and cautious approach to the battle.

So much potential with the pieces they put in the game. Needs a sequel to pick them up and use them better.

Would`ve been a bad idea imo especially since Evolve got released this month too. If they did that we would have another DLC shitstorm coming.

I`m not selling my copy. I`m going for another two playthroughs, hoping for some news about DLC in the meantime.

Finished it yesterday and got the platinum trophy as well. I think I clocked in at around 8 hours (collectible cleanup included).

I'm conflicted. Game was obviously a labor of love. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. Props to them for crafting what is easily the best looking game I've played.

So...the 5 and below reviews seem harsh in retrospect, but I don't think I'd give it anything above a 7 either. And that sucks because I wanted to like it more.

My beef isn't with its short length or derivative gun fights or even the incessant QTE. All they needed to do (for me, at least) was nail the story. That's it. Mediocre gameplay be damned. I was willing to show some leniency. But if RaD wanted to play in this lane, they should have completely owned it. Chapter 9 and beyond just seem cobbled together, as if they ran out of time or money. The ending was a punch to the gut. I don't know how people can overlook such a shitty conclusion.

I hope they get another chance. I was part of the crowd mocking this before I played it and I've sort of changed my tune. There's space for experiences like this. I was genuinely enjoying myself early on.

Good:
+I forget what chapter it is, but the one with airship was freaking awesome. Bravo.
+The gunplay is actually pretty good! And I love the weapon that incinerates the baddies.
+Chapters 1-8
+The three imaginative guns
+Voice Acting
+Graphics/Presentation/Sound/Design

Bad:
-The enemy encounters (despite the competent gunplay) are pretty meh.
-Too few imaginative guns...and I wanted to use them more.
-Lycan fights are awful
-Let me run lol
-Let me pull out my weapon when I want.
-Chapters 9 - ending, which essentially tanked the whole story for me. So, so much potential.

Yeah that would afford them the ability to pace the battle a bit better and leave openings for the QTE type of situation they already have implemented. Take note of all of this RAD!

Not to mention that these guys made god of war games. This should come to them quite naturally.

"Sad" isn't even close to what I think of this situation. I took a quick look at the social media, Facebook, YT, Twitter and wtf.. seriously, check for yourself, the damage is huge thanks to clowns called professional and all those that feel compelled to speak without even having played the game. Power of the internet, baby.
I wonder how much of all this will damage sales.

Hi DevilFox. I'm Adam Rosenberg, Digital Trends' gaming and movies editor, and the author of that unfortunate tweet.

So. You're right. I shouldn't have tweeted what I did. As one friend put it quite succinctly, it was in poor taste. I honestly wrote it with no ill intent; it was just a jokey comment between friends. But I should have given more thought to the fact that Twitter is a public forum before I said it. That's a very easy thing to forget. I really didn't care for the game, for an assortment of reasons, but it's one thing to write a scathing review and quite another to -- by all outward appearances -- take pleasure in someone else's misery.

I made a regrettable choice and I paid a price for that choice in the appropriately angry response it elicited. All I can do from here is take the whole incident as a lesson and strive to do better in the future.

I feel the same way. I've gone through the airship and bridge twice now. Will probably get to the Shipyard next. I love trying to make a game look as smooth and cinematic as possible anyways, and this game really helps to get that look once you know what to expect in each encounter. Can't wait to record some nicely done gunplay sections.

I feel like the musical score in the game doesn't get enough praise. They absolutely nailed the tone of the score in every encounter and sequence imo. The bellowing depth of it while in the hospital, the epic feeling while on the Agamemnon, the sombering, sorrowful tracks
while Galahad had those guilty charges read against him
and the ending scene...really hit me hard emotionally.

What are your thoughts on the discussions and impressions revolving around the game, and are you surprised your review and score is such an outlier, not only compared to the rest of the press, but considerably more so comparative to ordinary gamers? I'll be honest, a 2/10 score is something I usually expect to see set aside for broken, buggy, unpolished and near unplayable games, but having played through The Order nearly twice, I can safely say it is none of the aforementioned things. Quite the opposite.

Definitely one of the best aspects of the game. When you get to the basement of the hosptital...the music hits at the PERFECT time and almost single-handedly elevates the atmosphere to a deeply memorable one.

Question. So I got to chapter 6 on Friday but due to my wife missing out on some moments we reloaded and start back at the hospital. Now maybe I'm imaginging things, but during the Lycan fight, I swear the first time, we didn't pick up the context sensative pipe on the floor. I don't even remember getting a prompt for it honestly. Am I going crazy or is that actually optional?

Absolutely agree. I'd go as far as to say it is one of the better sound scores I've experienced in a game. That Agamemnon Rising track. Wow.

So I uploaded a video of The Order on Youtube, the airship section. Today I got a copyright claim based on the background music, which apparently is:

Jason Graves-The Darkness Within

Jason Graves-In the Darkest Hour

CHOPIN FREDERIC ARR GEORGE WILSON-WALTZ No 1 Op 64 THE MINUTE WALTZ- 615 Music

So, what to do?

Got the dynamic theme. Very cool. The Knight's Theme plays in the background too!
Is that a paid one? Or the free one that you get when you do the online thing?
