3DS HOMEBREW Discussion Thread [exploits/carts/applications/games]

I want to put my US physical games on a microSD card and play them on a Japanese N3DS.

I've ordered a white N3DS from Japan to install emunand on and use Gateway with, once N3DS is supported.

1. Do I need 2 large microSD cards? (I'm thinking 32GB)
2. If so, can somebody share an amazon link to a suitable microSD card?
3. Any other tips would be appreciated.

Quick question, do i need to keep the '_DSMENU.DAT' and 'GW_INSTALLER.NDS' files on the micro SD card that plugs into the red GateWay card?

Would you like to install them to the internal sd card (where they are basically eshop titles) or just run them from the gateways sd slot?

If you want to install them then you would want two large cards. One for the gateway and one for the n3ds.

If you just want to run them from the gateway you only really need one large card.

Id recommend both so you have options, installing is more time consuming but I like the result.

Other tips- have a lot of patience as gateway has not been updated to run on n3ds yet. But is expected "soon"

Thanks. I'm still deciding what I'm going to do. Gateway and emunand seem pretty complicated to use. I'm curious to see what DSTWO Plus is like for New 3DS.

I don't know of this has been answered before and my apologies if it has.

I did the nand backup of my sysnand and downgraded. Can that backup be restored as my emunand or have I lost all that streetpass data?

I think you need to have the system on that sysnand and then make your emunand while on it. Then you can downgrade your sysnand and your emunand will retain your old sysnand info.

Seeing this burns so much :( But I agree the community makes awesome themes! :D I might even try to make some myself even if I can't use them, just to share :)

I posted this in the themes thread, but no one seemed to notice!

I just made these two:

I've uploaded them along with a collection of other cool ones in this zip file. Some examples of themes by other people:

to install, use this app: https://gbatemp.net/threads/chmm-cus...anager.379349/

install that app as a CIA or 3DS if you have a Gateway or use the *.3DSX for ninjhax. have your custom theme folders in SD:themes

Launch the theme app. Press A to load a selected theme. Press START to exit, then reboot your console/emunand. success!

I'm kinda strapped for Cash now but will it likely be pretty easy to pick up another 3ds in the summer time with the required firmware?

I want to dig into this stuff but don't want to mess with my current system (its also on the most current fw so I don't think there is anything I can do.)

I got a 3DS for $100 via craigslist on the day before the new 3DS launched. I think it's driving prices down because people want to upgrade, so it's not a bad time to buy.

This is kind of a weird question but I hope someone can help.

I have an OG 3DS on 9.2 with every Streetpass puzzle completed and some other eShop stuff and a 3DS XL on 9.5. Would it be possible to install emunand 9.5 on my OG 3DS using Gateway and transfer it to my 3DS XL's sysnand? What would become of my OG 3DS's sysnand and emunand after the transfer?

Honestly, the only reason I want to do this is because Playcoin Setter works on my OG 3DS so I imagine it would be easier to get puzzle pieces on that than on my 3DS XL.

Bumping this up. Anyone know if this would work?

I read somewhere you need to hit home and close the game manually at least once to get a save file started. After that point, it's supposed to be ok. I've just been manually quitting games before switching to a different game and it's been working ok so far.
Retail carts not saving is more weird though. Maybe you should format your SD card? I don't know

I'm not positive, but I don't think sysnand can be transferred between consoles. Afaik sysnand is tied to one specific console. Even transferring it from one OG 3DS to another OG 3DS could prove dicey. A better solution would be to try and figure out where street pass data is stored on the SD card (assuming it save there) and transfer that.

Not sure about eshop games though. Might need to browse gbatemp.net for a solution to that.

I'm trying to make sense of this whole scene but it seems like things have changed so much over the last couple of months, it's difficult to figure out what's the current state of things.

My understanding is that there's a browser exploit for firmware version 9.2 that opens the door to do homebrew and dump carts to SD and the like. There is also a firmware emulator that lets you update to the newest version for online and eShop functionality.

I plan to get a little deeper into it sometime soon, but in the meantime, I kinda want to trade a few Pokemon. So, is it possible to just do the firmware emulation thing without all of the other stuff? And in that case, can I do it without needing a flashcart?

I'm 99% sure you need the flashcart. Pokemon works fine once you dual boot the firmwares. My eshop copy works great, but I lost my save when doing the emulated FW

Im not sure what you're trying to do.. Trading Pokemon to or from what?

If you have a retail cart and want to use emunand to get the latest patch and play online then yes I think you can do that with no extra hardware.

I want to be able to connect to the Internet for a couple of things. But you can't connect without being on the latest update. So to that end, and in order to not wreck my potentially exploitable 9.2 system, I wanted to try to do the firmware emulation.

I'm looking into this Emunand and from the sound of it, that should work for me. Thanks, folks.

EDIT:
I'm having some trouble getting the exploit to launch. It'll get to the white lower screen where I'm supposed to hold L and it just hard locks the whole system.

Looks like it's a problem with my SD card. It's a 64 gig microSD in an adapter. I don't have a ton on it, but it runs my couple of eShop games just fine, just not the exploit. When I swap in my the old, pack-in, four-gig card it loads right up.

So is there some trick to using a bigger card?

I wouldn't have thought so, I use a 64gb card in mine (microSD with adaptor too) but I run the ds profile exploit.

Have you tried deleting the launcher off your 64gb card and trying again, My first guess would be something is wrong with that copy of the launcher.

Yeah. Tried an older version, too. Exact same file works on the 4 gig. I've dug the 16 gig card out of my phone and I'm in the process of swapping things around. Maybe that will work.

EDIT: Loads right up off of that one, too. I'll have to tinker a bit. I'd like to use the 64.

You havnt accidentally formatted it to something thats not fat32 when moving things around?

I ordered a N3DS from Amazon.fr and hope to see it soon.
Also have Zelda a link between worlds, paper Mario and Marioi and Luigi dream team waiting.
It's the Cubic ninja hack worthless now?
I have the game and wonder if I have any use for it now.
It's gateway something I should look up instead?

Nope. I doublechecked a couple of times. It came formatted exFAT, of course, so I had to format it to FAT32 before using it. But it's not like I could have somehow changed the entire file system without wiping everything out between then and now.

As a separate matter, I did get my 16 gig card to launch Gateway 3.0.4 through the browser exploit and apparently back up my system NAND. So I tried to format it to Emunand and it said it completed successfully. Then what do I do? I thought I was supposed to launch Gateway Classic mode, but that just gives me a black screen.

I feel like I'm missing a step.

You might need to use the MT launcher and emunand that lets you use the emunand withoit a gateway card.

Can a kind soul give me a very brief simple rundown of what I can/can't do with my New MM 3DS XL? It's on 9.0.0-20E and I have Cubic Ninja. I'm more interested in homebrew than running retail games. Thanks :)

While we've got a page out for rich, I have a question: without a gateway card, what's the highest firmware one can install on emunand?

Not actually that important

You basically can't do shit on New 3DS :(
You can use Ninjhax but won't have sound working. There's no Gateway support yet either.
Anyway, if you look into the op, every app/exploit/emu I've tried to detail if and how it works on specific models.

To do what? Running it as a region free system? You don't need either of those (yet), just don't update it when it comes and use the browser to initiate the out-of-region games via regionthree.
Of course that means no access to system transfers, no eShop nor online multiplayer functionality.
EDIT: oh wait, you meant NEW 3DS. Then you can't use out of region games yet (or ever) so your best bet is to keep it on 9.2 and hope Gateway effectively releases support for the New! models.
But yeah, right now your console will be as useful as a brick if you wanted to run games from different regions on it.

Thanks Dash! I did read the OP but I think my brain isn't in the mood right now to be able to understand it all, hehe. I guess I'm just wondering if it's worth keeping my MM NXL on a lower firmware for homebrew since I primarily use my smaller N3DS now. Maybe I'll just wait around and see what happens with it all. I still have my OG 3DS with Ninjhax so I might update the apps on there and see what it's like now. Cheers :)

If I were you I'd keep my OG 3DS for homebrew and update the others. That's what I'm doing anyway. As far as N3DS is concerned, keeping it on 9.2 will be useful only if you'll want to look into Getaway whenever they start supporting the new models (which might very well be never, looking what kind of bluffs they've been keep going so far...)

Cheers mate. I'm kinda bummed out I can't use my old XL for homebrew since I had to update it to do a system transfer. With a bit of quick thinking I could have transferred it earlier to another 3DS so it'd still be on a lower firmware but oh well. It's kinda nice to get some use out of the OG model I guess, it feels so neglected, lol.

So, I had a look around and it's looking like the MT-Launcher only runs in firmware 4.0-4.5? I guess I'll just have to downgrade my firmware afterall.

EDIT: Well, I got a lot deeper into that than I was planning to at first. Got it downgraded, then the DS profile exploit installed, then finally the MT-Card launcher loaded. But good news is, it looks like I've got the newest firmware running in Emunand with all of my old stuff in it and the eShop connects, so I guess that all worked out.

Somewhere along the way, I convinced myself that I'd be okay tinkering with it as long as I had my backup I could restore from. Hopefully that's true.

It does seem to take an extra second or two to wake up from sleep mode when in the emulated firmware. Is that normal?
