Bloodborne: Impressions After 40 Hours (EDGE)

Most of it sounds good but I'm a bit concerned about what seems to be a lack of weapons imo. Only 12 found total in 40 hours? Seems like there could be a problem with weapon variety.

Maybe the weapons are still embargoed?

That does seem like a low number.

I'm not complaining, and I've only played 10 hours of Dark Souls, but aren't these games about loot and stuff?

What seems like a low number? We don't even know how many melee weapons there. They didnt finish the game, the chalice dungeon isn't up, and it's possible to miss them.

If anything, it's quite the opposite. Unlike the previous games, it seems that the weapons in Bloodborne seem to be handcrafted to be unique, whilst in DeS, DS1/2 alot of them had the same movesets just with different skins.

every weapon has a second form, and every form has a personalized moveset, that you can mix changing form mid combo
the variety will be fine

I'm just going by what's mentioned in EDGE, so yes, that seems like a low number. The key with what I'm saying is "seems." I admitted to not knowing much about Souls games, so if you are familiar to them, and the number quoted a million times doesn't seem low to you, then I'll take your word for it.

You can get the issue, which has 6 pages on Bloodborne, on Amazon tomorrow.

  • Bloodgems are an upgrade item that allows you to change the attributes of a weapon, ex. increasing physical attack power, adding poison damage, or increasing scaling - all the weapons in the game are customizable with bloodgems
  • They say in Souls you are frequently scared of dying, but in Bloodborne you are also scared of what is coming to kill you - "There is a moment in Dark Souls that we will never forget: down in the Depths, picking up an item from a corpse and a slime dropping onto our head. We spent the rest of the level panning the camera endlessly for unseen threats, no longer scared of dying, but of moving. Imagine a whole game of that." - For this reason they think taking the replayability factor to CD makes more sense.

  • Okay, the above two things really speak to me. I love nothing better than tinkering with builds and weapons. Second point suggest a more Demon's Souls-type philosophy than Dark Souls. It should be about tension and the fear of death than dying repeatedly.

Considering it was just a page ago and already being ignored, yes sadly that Is true lol

Whatever, people are going to read what they want to read and believe what they want to believe. When the embargo is lifted hopefully some better light will be shed on the whole weapon situation. I'm confident there will be plenty of weapons in the game.

Heh, that doesn't say anything to me. I only played Demon's Souls for few hours, until the Red Eye Knight. IIRC, I had to face 7-9 enemy waves again after being defeated by him.

Did you try going the other way? Red Eye Knights should not be fucked with until later in the game.

"If you thought From Software was going soft, Hidetaka Miyazaki is about to put you brutally back in your place. And if you've been watching this generation from the sidelines, unmoved by the remasters and rush jobs while you wait for the first true essential to arrive, now's the time. As if there was ever any doubt, Miyazaki and his team have done it all over again."

Sweet Jesus Salty Christ that is some goddamn statement.

It is really depressing that an article that should be causing pages and pages of yoshichan level hype is instead causing pages and pages of "6 weapons? 6 weapons? 6 weapons?"

Read the article yourselves and realize their first impression of Bloodborne are GLORIOUS. The game is apparently AMAZING. And hard. And scary as hell. And has the kind of level layout we wanted from Dark Souls 2 but didn't get. (A real blend of Demon's and Dark, not the too-many-bonfires, wheel-spoke-linearity of DKS2.)

It's pretty much exactly what I wanted to read.

But instead, "6 weapons? 6 weapons? 6 weapons?"

Sheesh.

That was my very first initial reaction as well but the more I thought about it the less I care. Hopefully there are plenty of reasons to come back and play but if there isn't it seems like the game is long enough to begin with. Not only that but the atmosphere and gameplay should be awesome.

That's "Dr." dofry to you.

What on earth are you talking about?? Can't you see the pros and cons of the game?
Whatever positives there are for the game, even if it could be GOTY, is outnumbered by it having six (6) weapons. Those weapons cut into the soul of the game so deeply, it cannot be healed. It's doomed.

I am more interested in the guns

Grenade launcher please

I wonder when we're gonna find that gatling gun.

Seriously this. I read the scans and nearly passed out. Game is seriously shaping up to be another masterpiece.

That some serious good IQ. Even when I resized it to 1080p (which should lose some quality) I could not find many jaggies. (not a jaggies expert)

If the game looks that good on PS4, I am serious impressed.

It's a bullshot. It won't look that good. Let's keep expectations real.
