Mortal Kombat X DF Face-Off (PS4/XBO/PC)

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/didigtalfoundry-2015-mortal-kombat-x-face-off

According to an enthusiastic tweet by creative director Ed Boon, native 1920x1080 visuals and a 60fps update are the goal for Mortal Kombat X. However the reality is somewhat more complicated, as the resolution does vary between platforms while frame-rates fall short of the desired 60fps ideal in a number of areas. Booting up the PS4 version for the first time, we can confirm a 1080p resolution is in place along with anti-aliasing that falls closely in line with standard FXAA. Thankfully, sub-pixel heavy structures in Mortal Kombat X are rare - an aspect that post-process AA algorithms usually fail to correct - and so the use of FXAA works well in addressing the subject matter. However, some light texture blurring is present as a side-effect, meaning fine details in the artwork don't pop out as noticeably as they could do.

In comparison, the presentation of the Xbox One release isn't quite as refined: details are softer while edges feature a slight fuzziness not visible on the PS4 game's native 1080p image. In this case, pixel counting strongly indicates a drop in horizontal resolution, which hovers in the region of 1360x1080 to 1344x1080 instead of the more common 900p setup used on the platform. Anti-aliasing appears identical to the PS4 game, and the coverage provided by the FXAA helps to smooth over upscaling artefacts to a degree.
From a multi-platform perspective, the PS4 game clearly leads the way with its native 1080p presentation and solid level of performance during gameplay - outside of the slight judder in story cut-scenes we're looking at a locked 30 and 60fps throughout. Meanwhile, Xbox One holds up reasonably well given the sub-native presentation, although the reduction in horizontal resolution results in poorer image quality and some partial degradation in artwork quality. Performance shouldn't be an issue for more casual players, with its occasional 1-2 frame drops small enough to pass by unnoticed. However, hardcore players will be better served by the PS4's solid frame-rates.

Usually, the PC version of a game manages to brute force its way to the top spot with higher graphics presets, resolutions, and frame-rates compared to consoles. However, this isn't quite the case with Mortal Kombat X. The mild boost in texture decal resolution adds an extra layer of refinement to its visuals, but the game is partially let down by the 30fps performance cap during X-rays and fatalities, which serves little purpose on a constantly evolving platform. Combined with the horrible black crush that effectively ruins the cut-scenes central to enjoying the single-player story mode, this leaves us with the impression we're not getting the best experience. Hopefully High Voltage Software - the studio behind the PC release - can address these issues in a future update, but right now the PS4 game is the best way to take the fight to Shinnok in this new Mortal Kombat.

If you want MKX, get it on PS4 as per Digital Foundry.

Chalk up another win for PS4.

If Sony can get this AF issue ironed out that Ps4 is having in some games, they won't even need to do these face-offs.

PS4 will win EVERY TIME!

I think they have already worked it out. It is 8x on PS4 and XBO which is reasonable enough compared to 16x on PC.

There is also some troubling performance reports on the PC version. Glad I skipped it, maybe HVS will....huh....do something about it, maybe.

So basically the visuals on PC during gameplay are only marginally better than the consoles, and there's an odd black crush for the cutscenes. No specific mention of inferior performance in gameplay.
As someone without a top of the line PC I'm pretty ok with that. Hopefully they can fix the gamma issue in a patch. Haven't touched the story mode so I hadn't noticed how bad it actually looks right now. Obviously getting Xrays to 60FPS would be great as well.

Is it confirmed that EVO will use XB1 version? I can see some "pros" complaining about that 1 or 2 fps drop.

EVO will be PS4, but I said if they want to win money ;)

Will be interesting to see where the ESL stuff goes. I'd guess the next set of tournaments will... Probably not exist anyway.

So for pros best to get in on xbox now.

Black crush on PC. Congrats High Voltage.

Bought this on XB1 because I like the clicky pad more for fighting games. Sucks about the mip-mapping stuff.

Bigger issue is the Net Kode.

Behind the scenes at Netherrealm making the netcode.

Someone mentioned in another thread that MS has a deal with ESL, which is why MKX is played on the Xbox One at that event.

This post is like distilled fanboyism. Got to appreciate the transparancy!

Okay let's get something clear here. We don't want DF threads to start off this way or continue this way. Let other users beware, if your only contribution to a technical analysis thread is to go in to be a cheerleader for your "side" of a console war, don't bother posting.

Lol but DF need Xbox click bait. Just like they done on PS3 last gen.

I will probably buy this on a sale now for PS4. The MP being region locked dropped all my interest from the game. I'd rather wait for a Komplete Edition.

Frame input, which is why you see most SFIV matches being played at the training stage to remove potential drops.

I'm not a PRO but it's hard to me for understand why a very litte drop on frame rate becomes a problem. Sounds extremely perfectionist bother with that.

Maybe for play in PRO level is relevant, I really don't know.

Edited my post for example. In case you didn't see it.

Frame lag can lead to missed inputs that can lead to dropped combos.

With fighters, especially, so much of the game is tied to framerate. Combo strings, blocking, counters, everything is tied to it. For most people, it won't matter, but at a certain level things like that can go from annoying to costing wins. When you have people who study the game, those 1-2 frames make a difference because they're impossible to predict and, thus, can really throw someone at a high level off.

yea I saw this coming pre-release

maybe I'll pick up the PC version on sale if they ever fix it, but right now just the PS4 version is good enough.

They way they describe, it's not that it's a problem, it's just that one is still preferable to the other, even if just very marginally. Some people are indeed sensitive to this stuff.

Ironically, if the situations were reversed, and it was XB1 very marginally better on framerate and DF made any noise about it, there would be outrage. But not so here.

Shoryuken.com should have a detailed breakdown of this when the time comes. The fighting game community is small, but very serious about this type of stuff.
