Microsoft to have new exclusive IP at E3, focus more on first party titles

I feel like splitting hairs between their first party studios and first party games particularly when Microsoft own the IP like with Ori, State of Decay, Quantum Break, Scalebound and Screamride is a bit of a bizarre argument.

Do you care so much that 3 of Sonys biggest games this year so far were all externally developed? Bloodborne, The Order and Helldivers? Then if you look at their line-up for other games: Alienation, Shadow of the Beast, Until Dawn, Ratchet & Clank, Everybodys Gone to the Rapture and others are not being made by their first party studios either? (Im not ignorant to the size of SCEWWS nor am I ignoring their games but I dont want to get into full on lists for comparison to make my point when it seems obvious enough).

Microsoft absolutely need to expand their first party studios but we're still getting plenty of exclusive content and im not concerned about that and ultimately that is all that matters.

I never said their exclusive content is lacking or needs more diversity. I would just like them to improve on their first party studios is all. I don't think thats that odd.

I remember you could tell who is working with Microsoft by looking at who Phil follows on Twitter. His followers list is too long now to see who pops up in there.

Also this new IP doesn't mean it's being done by a first party right?

I have to admit i haven't really turned on my white xbox one in a long time. I have just been gaming on my Ps4. Xbox One hasn't had anything exclusive like The Order or Bloodborne. I have to admit i am REALLY excited for E3. I really hope Xbone picks up steam.

Correct. He just says "new exclusive IP" which just means it won't be on other platforms, not necessarily that it's 1st party.

My guess for E3 is Scalebound gameplay, Halo 5 (an easy given), teaser for new Gears of War, Quantum Break release date, reveal of Rare's big game, release dates for new Forza & Rise of the Tomb Raider (safe guesses), Battletoads and the new IP. Stuff like CoD or other 3rd party games like The Division could show up too.

They've opened a load of new studios in recent years, some a bit older than others: Black Tusk, Team Dakota, Lift London and Decisive Games (last one we dont know much about size/scope of projects) along with some new Hololens studios too, they have bought Twisted Pixel, Press Play and Mojang in recent years too.

Rare are going back to making multiple games at a time, Lionhead also seem to be on that path too, Team Dakota are opening a new incubation team to work on something else, Press Play are multi-project.

They are clearly trying to improve on the size of the first parties but there is only so much growth you can do before you have to slow down and let things build before going again.

I'm not taking sides on this ( because both methods of internal or external development is valid imo ), but every now and then, I do get the itch of the hypothetical "what if developer X's working on a new IP?"

Personally, I would love to see 343, Turn10, Polyphony, etc all work on new IPs, even though it's highly unlikely for the next 5-6 years, if ever. There's a sense of anticipation and excitement when there's a possibility that talented studio X could potentially branch away from their bread-and-butter to doing something else.

I'd say it's something Naughty Dog has definitely earned. Every fucking time, GAF keeps hoping they make new IP and new IP over and over again.

I don't know why they don't all have small teams doing downloadable titles on the side, just skunkworking new ideas and concepts. Some of them could become something special.

How many exclusive exclusives has Microsoft put on the XB1? I'm talking about games that weren't ported to 360 or PC or merely console exclusive.

I don't think that that's fair. Microsoft isn't just Xbox One. Its 360 and pc too. you expect them to ignore everyone and everything else?

Can we just stop with the list wars stuff?

MS says they have a new exclusive IP, which means it will not appear on Sony or Nintendo platforms, but could appear on the Windows 10/Xbox platform. Why should we care about the specific hardware?

EDIT: So disappointing that you guys feed the troll.

Sigh this thread has become a console war haven like every other MS related thread. Just like the poster above said, the E3 Sony thread isn't anything like this, why do people have to come in an trash MS related threads with console war crap all the time?

I'm not saying MS fans don't do it in turn to Sony threads, it just gets annoying.

I'm of a mind that if they fill a gap
(no more shooters please unless they are like sunset)
and are genuinely good games then the more the merrier.

Its a totally diff thread, I also disagree. Ps threads always get the ps4 has no games, selling only on hype. Naughty dog just interactive movie bs. Selective reading.

Microsoft is windows not pc....they dont get anything when someone puts a game on windows.

They have some of their own games on Steam and they're merging the Xbox store into the Windows 10 store, so they definitely get something when they release their own games on PC and when a game is sold through their Windows 10 store.

I could say something, but then I know someone will chalk it up to persecution complex.

If it bothers you, just get out of the thread. This isn't going to stop.

Their own games....exactly. thats no different then any platform though. Any other game does not benefit them at all. Steam is a way bigger player in pc gaming then ms.

Right, but in terms of selling the XBox One in particular, it becomes less appealing when you can simply boot most of its games up on your computer. I don't care how MS does as a company. That's not my concern. I care about playing video games and saving money. So if there are a bunch of "MS exclusive" games that I can play on a machine I already own, at higher specs, likely at a greater discount, well that's maybe fine for MS on the whole, but not so great for XBox One specifically.

That's why the true exclusives discussion comes up. As a forum devoted to the games industry, it's natural that we want to track the success of major consoles.

Like Steam, they'll get a cut of any game sold through their store.

I'm not turning this into a pissing match, just correcting you.

Which right now doesn't exist. Ms is not pc its windows. Having a store front doesn't change that. I doubt ms third attempt to garner the pc market will work. Steam will continue to dominate

Downplaying the importance of having a vibrant PC community for Microsoft is stupid. They benefit from having the majority of PC games available on Windows, even if they aren't the ones sell them directly.

Sigh thats not what I said...at all. I corrected someone who said ms is pc.....thats not true at all. Never once said they dont benefit from having games available for windows at all. You have created a strawman.

PC gaming is mostly Windows. Having a store front will get them sales.

Doubt is reasonable and justified, but not a fact or relevant to my point.

But the discussion was about ips, someone said ms is also 360 and pc so cut them some slack.....pc is irrelevant in this case ms us not making a bunch of pc only titles that is effecting their output.

Never said it bothered me, just that it's annoying. I also openly admitted it happens in all threads. Not really able to avoid it, this entire board has become one giant console war, resolution gate and you have/we have the most games. It's always been that way on GAF since when I joined back in 2004, but it's gotten WAY worse in the last couple years.

I'm not stating it doesn't happen in Sony threads, I even said in my post that it does. The point still stands it's annoying no matter where it is.

Well yeah it is I agree. Too much console war bs going on.
You did specify the sony e3 thread and said it was different, then said all ms threads are like it so it seemed to me thats what you were getting at. My apologies.

Not at all was just using it as an example as another poster did above mine. It happens to every thread, though I admit the MS ones seems to derail faster. Either way it's bad in all of them. I only mentioned MS because we happen to be in an MS thread right now. I've complained about this in some Sony threads too, more so Driveclub ones.

I have a feeling this is a crytek game.

Not a chance imo.

Ryse 2 was canned because MS demanded the IP and Crytek said no which contributed it seems towards their financial problems then Microsoft terminated publishing of Warface on Xbox 360 and that meant Crytek had to shut it down as you can't self-publish on Xbox 360.

Slighly unrelated but GamesTM are doing a poll for most wanted Xbox One exclusive... I think the results are very interesting.

I get you. You have to see though that ms doesn't care about you as an individual. A sale is a sale no matter the platform. If they can get people to buy an xb1 for the game AND STILL get sales from pc and 360 crowd then why wouldn't they? And as for your last part there is nothing natural about tracking the success of a console imo. It's bound to bring out the worst in people. Especially the already identified console warriors.

Edit: Let me clarify by saying that I personally think that tracking the sales of consoles only fuels war and snide remarks. I do see why its done and there may be some use for it but the conversation and threads following are a big turn off for me, no matter who won the month.

You said that "they don't get anything when someone puts a game out on windows"

I said they did. So... Where is this strawman argument?

I've quoted your post for your reference.

Microsoft is windows not pc....they dont get anything when someone puts a game on windows.

I want Microsoft to come out and drop the bomb and say that all first party titles released from Win10 launch on will be cross-buy, cross-play (where it makes sense), and cross-save between Win10 and Xbox One. Also that they'll be enabling this same functionality via API for any third party developers that want to integrate.

Win/win for XB1 and Win10 owners. Players can build up a library on Win10 and feel the value prop for an XB1 increase and the same for XB1 owners who don't own Win10.

If it is truly Microsoft's goal to get everyone to upgrade and to create a first class PC gaming experience in Win10 this is surely the way to do it.

Sony's value prop with cross-buy/play/save is a great feature to their ecosystem, and its high time Microsoft matched and could even exceed it since they own Windows.

Anything less and I will be disappointed. I want to play Halo 5 on my beefy PC, and I want to play it on my comfy couch too. Make it happen MS.

What are the odds we get some Crackdown 3 gameplay at E3? Even just a short slice would get me hyped. I want to see what changes, if any, they're going to take to the Crackdown formula. I don't know if they're interested in going so far that it crosses into the Saint's Row IV route conceptually but more chaotic zaniness is always welcome in my book.
