Sony: "Our 1st party lineup a little sparse this year"; emphasis on 3rd party support

I wish LBP3 never existed, it's tainted the whole series for me and I used to love it.

Damn straight. All the proof you need right there that it's not worth rushing out a game to make it to the holiday season, just so a company can say "Hey, we've got an exclusive you can buy this Christmas!" and try to look good in the process. That game was short, broken, and it didn't have the heart and soul MediaMolecule would've no doubt given it. And now Sony will have to deal with the long term ramifications of allowing their consistently great franchise to be trampled on.

Oh, and the game bombed in the charts anyway.

And I am the opposite, we have 2 x 360 and 2 x Ps4 and wanted to get an Xb1 at some stage. Was my sons birthday last week and hovered over that buy button as he still has Live friends (but really hard to go back to 360 after Ps4 for both of us).

However, with 55 inch 4 K Panny 802 TV's I cannot stand sub 1080 games and so that only leaves Forza, if the DX12 thing pans out and exclusives get a upgrade and run a bit better would consider it more. MS really need to sort out that console imo.

Tomb raider is the only game on there I would go for, Halo went downhill rapidly after Halo 2/3 and now prefer Destiny Crucible.

See how opinions work ? At least you did not use the collecting dust phrase...

Nail on head really, and as time goes by some of the 'exclusives' come out on PC so I end up having even less reason to get one...at least with PS4 exclusives seem to stay that way (more often).

I'll never understand people trying to state the importance of releasing a bevy of games during the holiday season. This is the time when casuals and parents are buying consoles. Other than marquee stuff like Halo 5 or Gran Turismo, the average holiday buyer is going to buy the console that provides the best value in terms of price and bundled games. I'm fairly certain that if Rise of the Tomb Raider releases in the holidays, it will not chart (maybe in individual, but overall, no chance).

How do I know this? Because we've had this same situation in the past too many times. Driveclub, LBP3, Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 2. All solid games in their own right, while great for fueling holiday list wars, none of them charted. Not one. You know what was topping that chart during the holiday? Call of Duty. Madden. Minecraft. GTA. Smash Bros. Assassin's Creed. Those are the games people care about. I won't lie, exclusives do play a role in the holidays, but don't overestimate that role.

Whoever has the lower price (or better value) will win the holiday. I guarantee it.

Too much logic in this post.

Yeah, you're absolutely right. I think that's why Uncharted 4's delay has caused such a commotion, because it was one of the few exclusives Sony's got that is high-profile enough to actually compete with all the other huge releases during the October/November months and still manage to sell well. Now it's coming out next year, and whatever first-party title Sony tries to replace it with, if they do, is going to get buried.

Sony will definitely be relying on those third-party marketing partnerships to shift PS4s this holiday and that's that. Microsoft will have the edge over them in terms of first-party exclusives, but how much will that matter when your competition is going to be so closely associated with Battlefront and who knows what else (CoD?). Not that I'm patting Sony on the back with all the marketing deals they've got - that particular console-selling tactic is bullshit whichever way you slice it - but it's better they do that and keep the first-party stuff in the oven for however long it needs to be cooked than just send a game to its death. Hopefully there will be some smaller PSN-only titles and niche stuff to enjoy in the time being.

I've never understood it either. The whole idea of needing a barrage of exclusives for the holiday season is so archaic when for nearly a decade now, the games that have been selling systems during the holiday season are all multiplatform mega franchises.

It seems the narrative that Microsoft has set up where the holiday is the only time that game line up 'counts' has been bought by most of the people on these boards unfortunately. Either way, if Rime, Tomorrow Children, Persona 5 and DQ Heroes make it by the years end, I think I'll be having a pretty great time with my PS4 this winter.

LBP has never been a big franchise though, and driveclub's launch soured public perception of it big time, I doubt it would have done well in any month. You don't need a ton of exclusive for the holiday, but what you do need is a high quality exclusive with mass appeal to help sell your console and to give those who already bought your console something to buy.

Are there any podcasts that actually research what is big and what isn't based on the actual sales of things before they make statements?

The ones I know about certainly just repeat whatever they think is big based on how much they like it, how many demos they got at conferences and how hyped people on enthusiasts forum get. ;-)

Until one of them has the brilliant idea to ask the question: "But will it sell systems?"

Not among the many I've heard.

And you wonder why devs double-down on established, safe IPs. Because if ever any Activision studio decide to not make CoD, but a new IP instead, we'd have the games media #concerned about how this game from the CoD devs isn't 'big enough' to replace CoD.

Absolutely. I have no problem with releasing 1 (maybe 2 in a good year) marquee franchise during the holiday to promote awareness of the brand to would-be buyers and to give console owners something to anticipate. What's important is that it can stand on it's own among the likes of your Battlefronts and Call of Dutys and still sell well. For Microsoft, Halo 5 is that game. For Sony, Uncharted 4 was supposed to be that game. It will hurt Sony in the short term by not having the star power of Uncharted in the holidays, but will it matter in the long term? Not likely. Uncharted will still sell similarly if not better in the Spring because of the lack of competition, and because all the new PS4 owners looking for a new game to play on their shiny new console.

What I do have a problem with are smaller AAA exclusives being released all in one short period for the reason of touting a 'massive' exclusive lineup for the holidays. It pains me to see good games like ROTTR and Sunset Overdrive be released during the holidays, because they're going to be overshadowed by the usual titans. Honestly, what casual gamer or parent is going to buy Sunset Overdrive over the new Call of Duty or Star Wars game that all their friends are buying? Not very many, I'm sure of that. That's why I'm always somewhat relieved when a game like Quantum Break is pushed back to 2016 instead of Holiday 2015. New IPs and unproven franchises deserve their own time to shine, and I feel that the first 9 months of the year are the perfect time to do that. Look how much coverage Bloodborne & The Witcher 3 received leading up to their respective launches in March and May. I doubt they would have had that same recognition had they been released in November.

Let the titans do battle during the holidays, spread everything other release out so we have a parade of new games too look forward to year-round.

Sorry for the long post, I wanted to get that off my chest.

You`re wrong. LBP was the best franchise after Uncharted and GT last generation on the PS3 for Sony. The first two games sold roughly 9m and each LBP game was one of the best selling on the PSP and PSVita.

I also don`t see how you don`t see that it could do better on another month. Seriously? This game would have done a lot better coming out in January. More time to iron out the bugs, a lot less competition. But that wasn't the only mistake Sony higher ups made. Making it PS3-PS4 was stupid beyond belief, I think Shu was responsible for this atrocious decision. Who knows how much the PS4 version was held back.

I just hope LBP4 can get back to the first two's level of quality and overall reception from fans/reviewers. Getting those types of sales won't hurt either, but maybe Sony can do their job and properly support one of their main IPs. I can't even comprehend how terrible they were at handling that entire game. I still think the game is great, but LBP2 was amazing, one of my favorite games last generation.

They should have a class called "How to fuck up a major IP" and basically have a Sony rep come in a talk about their dumbass step-by-step for the game. Students will have plenty to learn.

Yeah, sending games out to die just to have a 'strong' Autumn line-up is a tragedy. SO would have done so much better if it was released three months earlier (obviously, it wouldn't have been ready last year, but ...). That's why I'm happy Sony seem to be giving games more baking time, because it means more breathing room for good games that aren't the blockbusters.

And then when you get to Autumn and the AAA heavies are out, the summer games are still there for new owners. Wins all round.

They should have a class called "How to fuck up a major IP*" and basically have a Sony rep come in a talk about their dumbass step-by-step for the game. Students will have plenty to learn.

That desire to tie LBP into the PS3 version, and the rushed release were the two main factors for its failure. That, and they seemed to completely miss the point of what LBP is; LBP3 was utterly charmless. If there was a QTE, for that bit in The Order where you find Sackboy, so you could put him in a gloriously rendered bin, I would have loved that. The hateful Little Big Cunt
I love him really, but his face annoys me just now

When the companies have a small interesting new announcement they tend to hype the hell out of the event anyway. If Sony is acting like that, I'm pretty sure they have nothing big (other multiplatform and some indies) to announce indeed...

This was what House said about E3...

"I think that E3 this year will be an exciting show.

"I think it will be a show where we see the next generation of hardware really start to deliver great content and experiences that, if not take full advantage of the platform, take a lot more advantage than we've seen before."

That's right It's all about opinions, I'm sure a few people would disagree with your comments but there is no right or wrong here - I see no point owning both consoles at the moment but I'm sure that will change, but I have chosen the console for the time being with the games I prefer

I also game on a 55" TV, but the sub-HD thing isn't an issue for - I can play 1080p native FM5,FH2 etc games and jump to a 900p unscaled games and notice really notice any difference.

exactly like i said. doesnt worth the effort.
no, that's not it. Let's pretend for a second that the wii u was selling better (like its predecessor). Like its predecessor though, its hardware is far more outdated than it's competition. And for THAT reason it is seeing a loss of 3rd party support.

Level 5 has already confirmed they will show a game there and it's been hinted a mainline DQ game might be on PS4 as well.. Personally, I'm expecting GG's new game to be announced. They also have new writers which means no matter what, it will be written better than Shadowfall. Also, when has Sony shown no new games at any major conference?

Are they also counting the free downloads for the PS3- and Vita Version (PSN Hack)?

There was never again a game that I was able to get for 10 Bucks only 1 or 2 months after release. Nevertheless, the games are good.

The games sold extremely well. Not sure why that is so hard to believe.

I cant remember. But I cant remember when they sounded so uninspiring pre-E3 aswell!

But yeah, youre right. Guerrilla may show their new RPG, and maybe were gonna see something big as a mainline DQ for next year.

Idk, holidays belong and are run by multiplatform titles.

Nothing will be messing with COD/Destiny/Battlefront

It's too bad Sunset Overdrive released when it did, would have been cool to put back in the oven and get some campaign co-op in that.

I count the majority of fall titles as first half titles for the next year. I don't have nearly enough money to get them at launch, so they get shifted to the next year. The first half of this year hasn't been so bad because I still have Far cry 4, Shadow of Mordor, Alien Isolation, Assassin's Creed (with better performance), Grand Theft Auto 5 and others to fill in the gaps.

More likely than not I'll pick up MGS5, BO3 and Rock Band 4. Everything else will get shifted to the first half of 2016.

That still depends on the terms of what the assets and etc were created under.

So Insomniac Games can in 20 year still hold the IP ownership, but still not the rights to the game they built in 2014.

The point is: IP law is complex and we don't know if Insomniac can bring Sunset Overdrive anywhere but the Xbone.
And maybe they can, and it's still limited and Microsoft has the final say.

This can all be true while their PR statements about owning the IP rights allows them to merchandise the fuck out of it.

Nobody but them know this because that's in the contracts that probably only two hand full of people have read.

They must have a valid reason to keep the IP. If they can't do what they want with it then there are no reasons to insist in keeping it

I don't even ....

What ?

Yeah man, whatever... I understood already. Dont need to come with this kind of answer, cause I'm really not confident we will see seomthing big (read: big budget) for 2015 exclusive for Playstation announced at E3, other then what was already announced. Maybe I'm wrong, and I hope I am, but I'm not really feeling confident giving their last words about their 1st party support for this year.

What I expect to see is a huge Battlefront propaganda (like they did with Destiny), a confirmation of Persona 5 (hopefully), and some some interesting titles like Guerrilla RPG for next year though. Again, maybe I'm wrong, and I hope I am.

Yeah, I'm skeptical about this year Sony's conference (when related to 2015 announcements). Sorry about that.

This was what House said about E3...

And, thanks for that, just now I've read your post. I've not read those declarations. But I know Sony will show good things there... I'm excited for Battlefront more then for almost anything else for 2015. And if I'm not mistaken, it will be shown at Sony's conference, aint it?

This is a shame. I hope when they do come, they aren't just more sequels.

Kill LittleBigPlanet, Killzone is dead. Please, no more God of War.

I want something original. I mean it's not always better. I'd have preferred a new MotorStorm to Driveclub, and you can keep making Uncharted and Infamous, but still, in general.

Woah how about no? :D

Is Tearaway still aiming for a summer release? Since God of War is coming out July and Until Dawn in August, I'm assuming either September or October.

It was never officially announced for summer. We only found out via the composer's tweet.

Anyway, I think it's likely for a September release.

I'm probably going to make a thread about it soon but here's a question

"Why do japanese games not exist anymore?" I mean, you can list as many fun interesting Japanese games as you want, but its like they aren't even there if they arent Western/ized or AAA launching in November and December specifically, and even then its a struggle to get anyone to recognize a lot of the software that comes out.

We have about more than 10 fully retail Japanese games coming Westward to PS4 this year, and we're still talking about how there's nothing there besides western third parties and Until Dawn/Teraway.

Bring up some of these games and they aren't even noted.

Case it point being Toukiden which i've probably spent more hours on individually than a lot of games this year, but its never included in games that came out at all

I'm probably going to make a thread about it soon but here's a question

I blame it on media coverage and consumer perspective. Because the media isn't going gaga over these titles, many people don't even realize that they've been released. When you combine that with the arguments like it's cross-gen, not AAA, or any other random argument, you get left with it not really being a "game"

I guarantee it.
driveclub & s.o were new IPs, and the former & lbp3 had bad reviews/publicity. in contrast, Uc2 was the top selling game in the month of its release, which was october. so I think Q4 this year will be different, with the likes of halo 5 and rotr being around.
