I never even heard of this game until Gaf. If they were to do a remaster I would at the very least be interested in checking it out.

What?? That's blasphemy. You gotta play the game to understand its beautiful story and cinematic. Yu Suzuki put his heart into that game. Now if only Yu Suzuki would be involved in the new reboot of Phantom Dust, then Sega franchises are redeemed.

NeoGAF: The only place where an image of a forklift can get everyone's panties into a tizzy.

I hope there is some Shenmue news though.

I have further evidence that we will not only get a Shenmue 1+2 HD announcement, but that it will be releasing soon this summer-
Yakuza 5 PS3 was delayed til Fall 2015.

Eh we'll get Shenmue 1+2 hd ANNOUncement, but I don't know if we'll get released during the summer so soon @_@

This is the year that I finally can pack up my Dreamcast and these puppies on a box.

First TLG and now this. I'm not gonna be able to sleep tonight :p
After all this time I think a remastered collection of the first 2 is more likely, if anything. I'd still be super happy to have that though. As for Shenmue 3? I'd love nothing more but I'll believe it when I see it.

I've said it for years, and I stand by it. I'll buy whatever system a new (or even remastered if done right) Shenmue game would ever release on.
Not that I'm getting my hopes up, it's been too long and too many disappointments.

I'll go as far as saying that if Sony rescues Shenmue, I'll do what I was planning on doing with Sega: Buy every game system on release day that they decide to put out without ever doubting it for a second.

Likewise. This is a console seller for me. Just like Dreamcast was.

I've never played a Shenmue game. I have heard the story in 2 ends abruptly. If there is a Shenmue 3 I'd rather they start over. I feel Shenmue games are quite outdated for me to go back to and to play Shenmue 3 without the older games it would not be appealing. It would be cool if they just released a reboot. Just call it Shenmue and have it retell the story of 1 and 2 as well as finishing it off with 3. Basically make it a long complete story.

I would love to have either...
Shenmue 3
Shenmue 1/2 Remake

but I would honestly settle for any of these...
Shitty port of 1/2
Some sort of half assed Shenmue related DLC for pretty much any game
Shenmue Amiibo
Shitty Shenmue cell phone game

Do the Shenmue games even hold up? Has anyone actually played it recently? Or is this just some insane rose tinted nostalgia?

I played the first one a few months ago.

It is as much of a breath of fresh air as it was when it was released. If anything, the innumerable dull and purely cosmetic "open worlds" that dominate gaming today just made me appreciate the micro-detailing, realism, and beauty of Shenmue even more. It is still extraordinary.

The game invites you to truly live in it's world in a way that is still unequaled.

Re-releasing the first 2 without plans to make part 3 would be pretty damn pointless imo.
Anyway, good old Yu is just trolling, take a chill pill people.

I think, as a 3D game from 1999, they still look exceptional. The detail in the texturing and in the environment is unmatched in games of that era. Even today they look good because of the small scope; they feel far, far more modern than something like GTA3 or even GTA4. It's still the only "open world" game where I genuinely buy the world and its inhabitants. Its dense and rich in detail.

The things about it that are annoying today are things that were annoying back then. The control scheme for general movement is awkward, the voice acting is poor, the lack of a time skip function (introduced in Shenmue 2) is annoying, and the script is really awkward. But it's oh so fun!

The plotting and pacing of the game are really wonderful and unique. It's a true slow burn and it's hard to think of many games that are as satisfying narratively as Shenmue 1's build into Shenmue 2 and then Shenmue 2's absolutely unparalleled climax and denouement.

The way Shenmue 2 ends is just like....and then they....and you don't get to see the end...and...

god.

I played Shenmue about a year ago for about 20 minutes at a friends house. I wanted to stop being his friend take his Dreamcast lock myself in a room and finish it because it's still damn good.

Zero Escape 3 and something Shenmue related being announced? GAFFFFFFFFFFFFFF! THIS IS TOO MUCH!

I love them but I don't think they hold up very well by today's standards. I doubt a simple remaster would bring in any new Shenmue fans. Unless they are only aiming to cater to the already present fan base with just a port, they need to shake things up a bit somehow.

So much this. Play the second one too! Or wait to see if this is really something of an announcement of an HD remaster.
