Lmao, perfect gif.

I mean, I said it earlier...I have no idea why a first party would pay for this. But as a fan, I'm ok with Suzuki making a visual novel or an endless runner or whatever if it delivers to conclusion to the story. Again, it's really important to note, though, that the world would not be big. Shenmue was never about OMG 5 BILLION SQUARE FOOT WORLD OF BETHESDA JANK TO EXPLORE or whatever. The first game is pretty small, actually-- Ryo's home, the surrounding neighborhood, a city area of a few blocks of shops, and then I guess the downtown harbor. It just worked though.
It doesn't need to be bigger than that. Keep it that size but just take it to the next gen? That'd be awesome!

That's why that Cuthbert/Suzuki pic exists

It's crazy enough to be real

Unprecedented partnership

Why are people so sure it's gonna be PS4 exclusive?

If Shenmue were to exist in any form other than a HD rerelease it would basically have to be exclusive to someone, because Sega ain't paying for it. Sony's just by far the most likely candidate.

Huber changed his bet. Its not "Shenmue in any capacity" anymore, its "a Shenmue game will be announced."
I know. That wouldn't make for a very good gif though. The bet basically amounts to the same. Mentioning Shenmue without some sort of follow-up would unleash the hounds.

I mean, remember Vib Ribbon last year? That didn't go so well.

A Life Is Strange-style episodic release would be more than fine for me.

This video explains why Sega will live forever. One way or another.

jesus, yeah...as an old school sega fan that was touching

Check this thread out right noooooooow!

i am so there!

What if its Shenmue 1 remastered in VR? Now you can open drawers in VR!!!!

DO NOT PLAY WITH MY EMOTIONS MAN

It's not really a meme, it's a common phrase that's used in many forms of media outside of gaming. I didn't really mean it in a negative sense, I was just genuinely curious if these games are still as interesting and fun as they once were because I know a large part of the allure of Shenmue was how innovative and refreshing it felt at the time... But I guess since there hasn't been much like it since, it still captures that feeling.

yeah, didn't mean to attack you, just that the line is often used here on GAF in a dismissive way whenever someone highlights an old game, and it usually throws me off to see people so dismissive of the culture i guess.

it totally has a place with shlock games you played/enjoyed as a kid, no doubt, but too often i see it applied in a way that makes classics seem disposable, i guess

An HD remaster would need a tremendously revamped control scheme. I just replayed the Shenmues on DC earlier this year and uh...let's just say things have come a long way since their time.

In a way, I think Shenmue has aged so well because it simply does things no other game does. It hasn't been outclassed in those areas because it just doesn't have any competition. It moves to the beat of its own drum.

This is a game where you can call your friends on the phone for absolutely no reason and than have really awkward conversations. You can go to the convenience store and spend a bunch of time trying to find the right food for an abandoned kitten. You can try to bury your grief for your dead father by distracting yourself with arcade games and gambling. More than any other game I've played you really felt that you are this person, this is your life, this is your house, these are your friends... and all of it has been tainted by this horrible event that has shattered your life.

In most games the heroes just leap into action with no consequences, but every bold thing you do in Shenmue you constantly feel the ways in which you are scaring and hurting the people around you who care about you.

It is just the best.

Well said

Sweet. So was the Dreamcast still alive in Europe and Japan at that point?.
I would assume so considering they bothered to do that and not give the U.S the same thing.

Dreamcast was cancelled in 2001 (from memory) so it was one of the last major titles. I always thought it was weird that it didn't come out in US. Maybe the first one did badly. The PAL version wasnt localised with voice, only subtitles (unlike the original).

Edit: I meant it WASN'T localised with English voices, just subs!

I await whilst praying, For this game predetermined since ancient times, and thus the saga.....continues.....

It'll be the E3 of the forever if they do it

I thought it was obvious from the picture...(sorry I am rubbish at art :/ )

But all seriousness, I haven't played either 1/2 but a guy at work is always going on about how amazing they are.. so yes I would pick it up if it became available on PS4.

Reading the pages of posts there will definitely be someone who is not going to be happy:

1. It will only appear on 1 of the 3 platforms
2. It will not appear on any platforms - it was all a joke
3. Browser game with micro transactions
4. Re-imagined as a match 3 game

Ah I see, thanks for the backstory.
That's interesting, I wonder why they opted to go Microsoft?

So what's the general consensus here in relation to Suzuki's tweet?
Shenmue 1/2 HD remaster or Shenmue 3 reveal?

either one or both.

Couldn't Yu Suzuki being there mean more Virtua Fighter?

They just released a new revision of 5 I would be VERY surprised if they did that.
He tweeted a forklift at a E3 event so signs point it to being Shenmue related.

BUT I would love for a new VF they need to stop milking 5.

Come on GAF. We're already getting The Last Guardian this E3, having Shenmue 3 also show up would be silly. At best we'll get 1 and 2 remastered/HD.

I don't know if there's a consensus, but in my opinion the most likely scenario is that a HD Collection is going to be announced during Sony's #BuildingTheList segment, when someone on stage, likely Boyes or Corsi, will talk about what the Third Party Productions team is up to next.

A hypothetical Shenmue III announcement is waaay out there. I think the commercial performance of the remasters will determine whether a third game gets the greenlight or not.

The controls are much better than people give them credit for. You hold R to move, its pressure sensitive so you can hold it looser to move slower. Then you just use left and right on the pad to turn. Most people try moving with just the dpad and its jerky, get used to using the run button and its actually quite nice

Well, Shenmue 3 and Last Guardian together with Half-Life 3 as 'three times a threequel' weirdly sounds right to me. It is E3 you know :)

I always wondered what announcement could make NeoGaf freeze.

I don't mean melt or give server issues
Freeze as in; people would stop posting in other threads and any other gaming related news/info/question would sound trivial and inappropriate at that time.

Can't think of a single announcement that would grab everyone's attention and become everyone's only videogame related concern or thought, of course, but a TLG, Shenmue 3, Half Life 3 combo would go places.

Microsoft bought exclusivity, and I seem to remember that many Sega people migrated to Microsoft Xbox division so there was some kind of natural relationship that perhaps eased the deal.

THAT WILL BE GRAND TOO!

But Valve doesn't believe in the number 3

Ohhh that makes tons of sense.

I think Shenmue 3 is unlikely. Simply because it seems odd to release a sequel to a set of games that requires people to track down older consoles in order to experience previous parts of the story.
A HD update of the Shenmue 1 and 2 would make more sense as it allows newcomers to experience the series and older fans to refresh their memory with the least amount of effort.
More importantly, it would set everyone up for a third game.
