Gameplay changed? No random encounters? Open World? Scenario rewritten?
I am out. Might as well make a new FF then, what is the point?

Did some of you guys even like the old FF7? If not - then ... I don't think this is for you either?

I'm not a huge fan of FF7, but the scenario needs to stay the same. The dialog can certainly be improved, but change the basic scenario, change the story, and it's no longer the same game.

I'm indifferent to random encounters. They can add a certain... intensity... that is missing from most modern RPGs, but so many developers seem to get the encounter rate wrong. Maybe have adjustable encounters, like Bravely Default.

Open World could be cool, as long as it's based on the world of FF7, and structured like Xenoblade (story driven with clear cut goals).

The battle system needs to remain active turn based. Change that, and you've essentially changed the genre of the game. Final Fantasy 7 introduced a whole new generation of fans to turn based games, no reason the sequel can't do the same.

Not sure what to make of this, I was very happy to be getting the PC version on the PS4 and I was always concerned that a remake could move away from what made the original so great for me but when they started showing this I was having Bosman style palpitations and I no longest cared.

It's going to be a while before this releases, I'm assuming the initial idea of the PC release has been shelved now?

Ehm no thank you. The game need to be a remake, that is fully remade starting from scratch. Gameplay changed and more real time; no random encounters; open world, dynamic weather and day/night cycle; scenario rewritten and updated to match with the prequels and sequels published after the original ect.

If they want it to be a big hit, it must be a game the new generation of RPG players can appareciate.

Sounds like you want to play FFXV.

I want FFVII.

There are going to be a lot of surprised/unhappy people when the actual game is revealed. It's so dated that they're bound to make changes, and graphically speaking I doubt it will have much semblance. Hopefully they can get the balance right.

After all of this, even if it is, I don't want to leave the matrix.

Just laugh dude, thanks.

Seriously emotional moment for me with this one. I've been waiting for this day since I was fourteen.

This was the first year that this rumor went around that I really didn't believe it. Even slept through the Sony conference (started at 2:00am here).

The rumors also said that they were aiming for the 20th anniversary. Can't see that happening unless they've been working on this in secret for some time.

I've primarily been a PC gamer all my life but I'll be damned if I didn't just get sold a PS4. I will wait no longer than is necessary for this game.

On a more somber/depressing note, my first thought upon seeing the trailer was that four months ago I very nearly took my own life. I was pretty close too, police dragging me off of train tracks and whatnot. If I'd succeeded I'd have never seen this day finally come.

Final Fantasy VII, The Last Guardian, Fallout 4, Doom, a backwards compatible XBox One that supports mods, the PC being taken seriously, VR, Hololens.

Sony didn't win E3.

Microsoft didn't win E3.

The PC won't win E3.

We won E3.

What a time to be alive.

I agree... if you ever want to game with me when you get your ps4.... my tag is Droozy.

It'll come to Xbox eventually. If it was a console exclusive then they would have said so. The fact that they said "first on PlayStation" implies it's coming to more than just PC; they're always very particular with their words. But honestly, the more people that get to play it, the better.

Agreed.

If it was only PC and PS4 they would have said "console exclusive on PS4".
Saying "First on PS4" means it is a timed exclusive and will release on Xbox later.

Guys, what if this will be a Telltale Game-esque retelling of the story with QTE Battles and shiny graphics? Haha, I would not even be surprised.

Either way, back to playing the FF4 remake for Nintendo DS, which made the game frustratingly hard but gave it cool cutscenes - so I guess we will just have to wait and see what this one does.

Sounds like this game isn't for you. There are plenty of other games that do what you describe, you should go there and leave my game alone.

Here you go.

Seriously what is the point in remaking it if everything is going to remain exactly the same?

Am I the only one here who loves the idea of flying around a big open world like the one in XV in the Highwind?

To me FFVII was beloved for its story, setting and characters. Not its mechanics.

Indeed.

Like I said, this thread is proof incarnate that people are falling on polar opposite sides of the fence on big stuff, too.

I'm elated beyond belief, but I'll probably try to veer wayward from most discussions on this project for a while. Thick lines are being drawn as far as fan expectations are concerned and the arguments between camps are going to get pretty tired given SE's glacial pacing of information reveals.

They'd have to change a lot honestly for me to be invested again. They need to improve the flow of the game and UI a lot. Agree with other people who said it but, the original is always there if you want it.

I am really curious to see what they do. Not sure what to think about the weirdly super-serious trailer and gruff man narrating (which doesn't seem representative of what I remember), but no matter what, this is going to be a very interesting ride.

It can still be turn based and innovative.

Plus the materia system got so much potential. Would be a waste not to expand more on it and just make a pretty looking FF7.

So basically you don't want Final Fantasy 7.

final fantasy 7 IS the story and the characters. A crippled aged gameplay system doesnt make the game.

first of all HYPE!! so excited for this.

second of all, unless i misheard what the cheesy narrator said, it sounded like this was a follow on from 7, rather than a remake?

It was tongue-in-cheek referencing of the fandom itself and the time that's passed and whatnot.

It's a remake of the original.

Holy crap @ people thinking this game's going to be turn based. It's clearly going to be more of a re-imagining, rather than a completely faithful reproduction.

Fuck yeah! I want them to go after FFXV but with team gameplay and a massive connected world.

This could be this gens FFVersus though ahaha. Released on fecking PS5. I hope not! SE must have enough resources to make a few big games!

I'm surprised that so many people didn't get the tongue-in-cheek nature of the narration.

It was talking about fan reaction to the original FFVII release, how the characters we met there were never forgotten and we waited so long for them to return. Now after so long, "the long calm", this announcement has happened. Now that there's going to be a "reunion" with these characters, some people will be happy and others will be worried but we should all just embrace whatever the remake brings. Because they're coming back, and they're finally promising that an FFVII remake is coming out.

It's great.

Wow I hadn't noticed lol. Good Stuff. And very true, especially the "some will be happy, others worried" part.

Yeah. There's going to be a lot of threads that feel like diving into a fighting pit. It won't be worth the aggravation.

Didn't someone at SE say there's still room for turn-based combat?

I'm confident this will keep it, or stay fairly close to it. Wouldn't mind a Xenoblade/FFXII sort of thing either where you still have freedom to move around whilst the ATB recharges.

We don't have details of that yet, so people are free to think how they like.

I'm personally hoping for turn-based.

They won't throw millions and years away developing something for people who already played it years ago and probably don't even play games anymore.
You want your remake to please new people too. Changes will be made and it will be painful for us old timers.

Oh of course, I'm expecting many changes, tweaks and improvements.

However, I can't say I'm expecting HUGE changes to the core of the game that some are suggesting such as a change in the storyline, or an entirely different battle system.

It is a remake after all, it's always going to be grounded in the original, especially with XV being so close offering exactly what people want changed in 7, assuming FF7R being released in 2017 for the 20th anni.

But of course it's all open to debate, we know nothing but a CG trailer currently, I'm still excited regardless of what they do or don't change to be honest.

So the ps4 hardware is capable of allowing us to explore a fully realized midgar, to appreciate its scale and hustle and bustle in new and amazing ways, and it appears that some people would rather this take place from a fixed perspective, mostly top-down, and regularly interrupted with random battles against monsters that spontaneously pop into existence. I'm sorry, but that is fucking absurd. I was there from the beginning too, but that is fucking absurd.

I caught that, gave me a little smile.

Yeah, no...

FFVII was cheesy as fuck, it's part of it, contrary to what AC lead people to believe.
AC mislead people so bad that they remembered FF7 incorrectly. I had to explain to my friend the plot again with him disagreeing despite youtube links of gameplay as reference.

I don't understand gamers (and developers) who think turn based RPGs are no longer relevant, who want to dismiss an entire genre of games. If you don't enjoy them, that's fine... if you simply want to play a glorified action game, there are plenty of "RPGs" that have you covered.

But FF7 needs to remain turn based. As I already pointed out, the original game introduced a whole new generation of gamers to turn based games, no reason the remake can't do the same.

That would have been a fair assumption, but the end of the CG states "REMAKE", and not "SEQUEL" or "Final Fantasy VII-2".

So it is indeed a remake of the original game.
