What level of Tomb Raider 2 is that supposed to be? I've beaten the game loads of times and I honestly cant tell.

Crystal Dynamics sympathizes Rise of the Tomb Raider fans on other platforms

Shows off new Tomb Raider, exactly like last Tomb Raider, to the point that even the tutorials are the same
Shows of new Uncharted, looks similar to last Uncharted games, but with better gunplay, greater freedom, and new, useful mechanics... OMFG amazing.
The Tomb Raider hate is so thick, I can barely see the neogaf posts.
You mean the press conference video?
Xbox had control over what ultimately is shown there
It's a game. I wonder how many gunshots most heroes take in videogames and they just brush it off? How many times are you shot as Nathan Drake during a standard playthrough?
I do wish TR was more realistic but at the same time I don't want to die from a grizzly bear wound that got infected because I didn't clean it properly, or bleed out and die from blood loss.

Why is there always a presumption in this dumb war that one must inherently be better than the other, and that anyone who has an opinion off that prescribed path must be fighting in the eternal console ragnarok?

See lukeskymac that doesn't really help. You can make a case that many of the new features of ROTR are "useful" too. This is always why these conversations are dumb.
Because the automatic presumption is that there is a standardized opinion to have, and that if you do not fall within that window you must have an ulterior motive.
I am a huge fan of the Tomb Raider series, but I hate TR 2013. It was awful.
But I am also not a big fan of Uncharted series.
But improvements there are, and I can list them. They are not insignificant.
[...]These changes are also not at all insignificant. It really doesn't interest me to argue whether they are more significant than the ones in TR. I am not sure if it will be enough to make me think the game is decent either.

I am a huge fan of the Tomb Raider series, but I hate TR 2013. It was awful. This game seems to me to be the same foundational game as 2013, with improvements that do not change the fundamental reasons I disliked it. Until I play it though, I do not know whether those improvements will be enough to make me enjoy the TR2013 formula. But improvements there are, and I can list them. They are not insignificant.
But I am also not a big fan of Uncharted series. UC2 is the only one I even thought was decent. And it's because I thought its jumping/climbing mechanics were useless and automatic, I do not like the constant combat arenas set up, and even though the gunplay mechanics are pretty decent, the design of the overall game - wander into good looking setpieces which fundamentally do nothing for gameplay since it only looks dangerous most of the time - did not impress me. However, the first UC4 demo at PSX seemed an improved title from a gameplay perspective, in terms of my issue with the combat arenas. Here it is clear they took some criticisms to heart and opened up many emergent gameplay opportunities within the sections, so you can string together all sorts of more interesting maneuvers, sandbox-style. These changes are also not at all insignificant. It really doesn't interest me to argue whether they are more significant than the ones in TR. I am not sure if it will be enough to make me think the game is decent either.
But any variation of this thought is fine. As long as someone can back up their opinion. If someone says "TR rox, this killz Uncharted" that's a troll. If someone says "lol TR thought it could compete with UC? UC4 destroys this generic game", that's a troll.
Why is there always a presumption in this dumb war that one must inherently be better than the other, and that anyone who has an opinion off that prescribed path must be fighting in the eternal console ragnarok? Slasher was wrong, but so was your response.
First of all, apologies for post length.
Let me get this out of the way, then: the added mechanics aren't "useful" because, going by this specific demo, they are just overpowered abilities added to a character that was already somewhat overpowered in her previous game, that serve no purpose but to "show off" when you're bored, as was mentioned in previous pages. What is the trade-off in using poison arrows, if they are instakill on standard mooks? Why would you hunt for a gallon of fuel, throw it, and have it blow up with a ridiculously exaggerated radius, when the AI is already so piss-easy to distract and take out? I'm willing to argue about this stuff.
Can you clarify how this relates to my post?
I agree, for the same reasons.
I disagree, for reasons oft-debated in LTTP Uncharted threads and not really relevant right now (it's not like I'm going to change your mind).
Please do.
Here's the thing: a lot of people think Uncharted's were more significant, and thus why those people look favorably upon UC4 and not TR. Unlike what the post I quoted claimed:
This part is why I asked for clarification early on. I was being sarcastic in my post when I wrote
Because that's what the poster I was quoting implied - that TR and Uncharted's new showings were similar but that Uncharted's gets a pass because it's Uncharted.
LOL no, man did you even see UC? It is a pretty significant improvement in every area with physics, interaction, traversal, open areas, multiple paths, large, dynamic set pieces, verticality....
Compare that to Tomb raider which looks exactly the same as the 2013 TR. There is a reason the press was gushing over UC4 after they saw even more of it behind closes dors.
Re read it

Looks good but some parts look over scripted. Like David Cage levels.
I have no idea why people don't like "scripted" stuff... Why is it that things that are scripted gets such a panning. Who cares as long as it looks good and works with the game??
To me personally I wish there were way more games like this and uncharted because I don't have a lot of time to play games and big open worlds just drain my life and they seems to be trend these days. I was hoping for more games like uncharted and tomb raider because they're just the pinnacle of gaming enjoyment imo sort of an interactive movie thrill ride. That's what a game should be and leave the open world stuff to the RPGs.
Focus down assassins creed to a game more like these and I'd play them... But alas people love to run around doing shit that doesn't really matter and I'll never change that.
At least there are a couple of games coming that cater to my tastes and I simply cannot wait for this
Looks like a carbon copy of the reboot. Unfortunate, as it means more of this:
Because it's terrible gameplay...Uncharted makes up for it because it's encounters are dynamic and set pieces are amazing, it also has great Multiplayer.....Also UC4 seems to be moving further away from it. Scripted events are lazy and take control from the player it is literally all style no substance if they are over done, in TR it seems almost every they have show is full of them.

Can we get away from the Uncharted talk seeing as this is about Tomb Raider a game releasing this year. The amount of pollution I've seen in threads since E3 has to be a record high.
Let's try and keep things on topic rather than trying to move away from it to push an agenda. It's boring as fuck.
This demo was much better than what they showed at Microsoft's E3 conference. The gameplay looks identical to Tomb Raider, with no real innovation, but the gameplay in Tomb Raider was fine. The pre-rendered cut scene graphics look nice, while the game play graphics look very similar to Tomb Raider.
I'm going to disagree 100%. Tomb Raider wasn't even as good as UC1. Tomb Raider was fine from a basic gameplay perspective, but where it fell down drastically was in story line, characters and dialogue. The story line was poor, the friendly characters weren't useful or memorable, the enemies were generic, and the dialogue was comic book level. UC4 has already shown gameplay that is generation ahead of either Tomb Raider or Rise of the Tomb Raider. It's not going to be a close contest.

Gameplay was way better than any UC, that's the main thing.
UC's set pieces are great though, I hope TR2015 can top them.
This garbage is going on in pretty much every xbox related thread right now. Its ridiculous. It would not be tolerated if it was reversed.
Fair enough but I was not the one who brought it up....... as shown below xbox fans are often bringing up Uncharted, and people are responding.
Unfortunately it is xbox fans bringing up uncharted,.

can i just mention that even if that was true, is "it was joe that jumped off the bridge first, i was just responding by also jumping off the bridge" really a good argument?
Do you need to be reminded that it's all about opinions? I love the Uncharted series but one of its weakest points is the gameplay - TR does it much better.LOL no. TR cannot hold a candle to UC2 or 3, lets not ignore UC's MP is on another level then TR. UC's encounter design are on another level then TR.

My god ... why didn't they show this. It looks gorgeous.

Why is Lara still so unsure of herself ?At this point She should be like Drake in Uncharted 2 making wisecracks in the snowy mountains.
Uncharted 4 looks much better.
Well no, but people are allowed to respond.
Was evident in the BC threadDamn I'm an idiot
yeah yet there is not a single TPS game that has as much varied and stellar gameplay as UC. The gameplay is fantastic in Uncharted. UC1 had some issues, but that was in 2007.
The shooting sections were a nightmare though.
And with that being the majority of the game, eek!
But I'm sure Naughty Dog will have sorted that out by now.
I never brought up UC first btw, I was replying to someone else.
How many third person shooters have you played?
So, you started gaming when Uncharted came out? I can see you really like Uncharted so I'm just going to leave it at that.yeah yet there is not a single TPS game that has as much varied and stellar gameplay as UC. The gameplay is fantastic in Uncharted. UC1 had some issues, but that was in 2007.
yeah, I see what you're saying.2 things - Scripted events suck when there is no player agency. Compare the set piece in UC4 E3' demo to the TR E3 demo at the conference. One highlighted open drivable paths, multiple flanking options all while maintaning a sense of urgency and tension and flair. The other was basically push forward and jump without any sense of player agency. It was the lowest of the low in terms of player interaction. I agree that scripted events have their place. Every game has some level of scripted events. The good one's continue to give the player agenecy while the bad one's like TR are just push forward and jump kind of set pieces.
Now look at this demo and the psx combat demo and again see the differences mechanically. One is super fluid when transitioning from melee to gunplay, encourages flanking, constant movement, and use of verticality all while retaining control on the stick and also a strong focus on AI and player agency. The other is well a protagnist muttering to herself telling the player what to do for the first few minutes making signposting and things so obvious. Then when the combat starts the verticality involves jumping up a branch. There is no major emphasis on movement, no emphasis on clever AI, No interesting melee etc.. Now at least this demo looks servicable in terms of combat but there is nothing that really stands out. The bear chase being another example of an uninteresting setup which has the player run in only one direction.
They didn't want to set aside a whole 15 minutes for it? Their conference was already pretty packed, unlike Ubi (who had much they could've cut to make room for the AC gameplay) I don't think there was anything they could've reasonably cut to make room for this.
