Devil's Third disappears from "Future Releases" section on North American Wii U eShop

Let's face it. There isn't much confidence for this game from any branch of Nintendo. It's just that NoJ and NoE are willing to fulfill their obligations to the developer and to their fans by releasing the product at all. Clearly no one in the company gives much of a fuck about the game in terms of commercial value.

In Japan, it's a Amazon Japan exclusive for retail. This is practically unheard of. For anyone who doesn't want to order it from Amazon Japan, it's practically an eShop title.

In Europe, it's getting an English only release, with no additional European languages available. This is also very rare, especially for the sort of title this should be - a western focused action shooter with a heavy multiplayer component.

In the US, Nintendo isn't even interested in publishing it.

It just seems backwards though. multiplayer-action FPS would sell best in the US/Canada (not sure for the rest of the Americas), then Europe, and then Japan as dead last. Why are they being more conservative in the US then?

I'm assuming the worst

Seriously, fuck this shit. This is why I hate NOA. I've been waiting six years for this game, and was so stoked to see some new footage, as rough as it was. And now Nintendo can't even be arsed to upload it to the E-shop? there's already an EU english build completed, this would literally take zero effort and money. NOA is seriously a shit company sometimes.

They're charging $60 for Star Fox. Not only a very ugly game but one without a multiplayer mode, needlessly weird control scheme and will probably be able to beat on three hours.

They're also releasing an Animal Crossing party game whose only shown mode is a board game with everything decided purely on luck. Even Mario Party gives you agency with items and minigame performance.

Quality means nothing to Nintendo.

I'm angry too but this is just silly.

This is the thing I don't get. They have a way of putting out games without putting out a physical copy in stores. They can remove all the cost associated with a physical release. It's not like they bother to market most of their games anyway. There should be no extra cost there. There are parental controls in place to prevent underage customers from even buying or seeing the game. It's not like there aren't eShop only releases on the eShop as far as retail titles go. There are a number of them and titles that eventually become eShop only titles because they simply aren't in physical stores anymore.

A repeat of what happen on the Wii and DS shouldn't even be hinted at. With the eShop Nintendo of America should even get an option to pass on games if they're being released in Europe and Japan. Doesn't matter what the quality of the game is. It shouldn't be up to Nintendo of America to determine that.

Edit:

See what this situation is doing is giving me even more pause. Nintendo as a whole can try to do things differently with the NX, whatever it may be, however there will always been the concern that Nintendo of America will pull BS like this. With the Wii and DS it was somewhat understandable. Everything had to be a physical release. That is gone with the Wii U and 3DS and they're still doing things like this. I see no reason to believe they wouldn't try to pull this with the next set of hardware.

The answer to this and every other really weird and questionable decision made by NoA:

Yup, garbage company. I seriously bought a WiiU for this and Bayonetta 1/2, and this is possibly the last time I support them. First it was the bullshit shenanigans they played with Xenoblade, Fatal Frame 4, and Last Story, and here we are again. It feels like whoever is in charge of these decisions is potentially braindead, or completely out of touch with respect for developers and the gamers who buy their machines and support them.

This games looks pretty bad but some people here want it so I want them to release it.

Haha, not gonna lie. It doesn't technically look great, but I've loved every Itagaki game I've tried. The multiplayer looks like a ton of fun, and I have the feeling it could potentially be something special.

The fact that NOA purposefully wouldn't publish Xenoblade and Last Story tells me this has nothing to do with quality, either. They probably just realized there was like no buzz for it, and comments were generally negative, so just decided to purposefully obstruct NA gamers from every being able to play it, like a big pile of jerksauce.

The WiiU has just been a giant coaster for me too, since I'm not really into the kiddie aesthetic, and it barely has any support outside of first party. Bayonetta 2 was great, I'm just choked it and Wonderful 101 (which I didn't really end up liking a lot) might be the only reason I shelled out $300.

I'm pretty psyched for when Nintendo of America cancels Xenoblade you guys
Seems about in line with the way othet publishers treated it when it was xbox 360/ps3 bound.

Maybe it just doesnt look to be a very good game?

Should let the consumers decide that. Activision thought Sleeping Dogs/True Crime HK 'didn't look to be a very good game' either. I imagine a lot of people disagreed once they played it

Can't blame NOA if they decided to drop it, last video honestly looked awful.

and if that happen Itakagi can survive by pulling an IGA and kickstart a Ninja Gaiden clone, call it Shinobi Tale or something.

It looked terrible anyways. It's probably in development hell or something. I honestly couldn't care if it released or not at this point.

Exactly, if this had anything to do with quality, why did NOA refuse to publish Xenoblade and Last Story? Like, it certainly could be, but this is no indicator. It's probably more to do with NOA realizing it has abysmal sales potential.

The thing is, why not at least release it on the eshop? there's seriously no excuse for that at all.

Batteries the CRISIS!
Not at all. Same thing happened last generation with a number of games on the Wii. Released in Japan, released in Europe, fully localized. NoA wasn't interested. If not for XSEED, there wouldn't even have been a release for The Last Story either. This is the same shit since day 1.

or Pandora's Tower

Americans never got Fatal Frame 4 (even if it did have bugs), Fatal Frame 2 Remake, Disaster: Day of Crisis and Another Code: R despite complaints about droughts and no "core" games.

And then there are the games that stayed in Japan like Zangeki no Reginleiv and Captain Rainbow.

I really wish some people would read the OP.

The game isn't in development hell (not anymore, anyway). The game is finished. It's releasing in Japan and Europe in August.

BatDan

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
Honestly, I don't see the need to be upset. The game looked terrible anyway.
By putting it exclusively on Amazon Japan, it shows that even NCL has no faith in it. It will likely bomb worse than W101 (in Japan).

Though this does make me wonder why Nintendo even rescued the game.

What a disaster...
day of crisis
Speaking of which I wonder if Devil's Third is another
game that Reggie thinks sucks therefore it won't come out (he did say something about Disaster being rubbish and EU sales are a "test")

And NoA continues to cement itself as the worst possible branch of any video game company in the industry (and that includes Xbox Japan).
Those guys at least released untranslated games :p

You don't understand. You have agency in a slightly meaningless way. You can choose when to sell the turnips and how many...number of turnips and value is luck based. ;-/

Is there some competition to be the most hyperbolic in stating how bad the game "looks"

it looks different, it might be shit, but I don't see any conclusive evidence yet. That trailer made it look pretty fun with a very meaty online mode.

Just another day for Nintendo of America. What can possibly go wrong with leaving the Wii U's summer completely dry to evaporate any possible momentum Splatoon could've generated? I'm not even surprised at this point. Hopefully someone gets this out in August. Whether or not it's good, it deserves to at least come out in all regions.

They probably lost confidence after the completely dead response they got from unveiling it.

NOA has become extremely conservative of late. Eshop only releases for Art Academy and Fatal Frame and potentially no release at all for Devils Third. It's a shame because it looks like a game that's broken in all the right ways.

Can't really blame them for not publishing it over here. Seems like the NOA marketing budget is really tiny lately. Hopefully another publisher picks it up. It looks fun.

They don't even have to market it though. Put it on the Eshop and thats it. It's a game that is going to market itself to a niche audience.

I am hungry for an itagaki game.

Hopefully the NX isn't region locked and these type of things will be less of an issue in the future. For now, this is how it has been and will continue to be for some time.

Valhalla were originally using the Darksiders engine, right? Did they ever talk about why they switched to UE 3?

I still think the debut trailer from 2010 looks pretty cool.

I imagine the whole "no longer being published by THQ, therefore no longer being able to use one of their proprietary engines to power the game" thing put a damper on that deal. It sounded like the game went through a lot of engine changes throughout its development, which is why it looks so uneven.

Maybe they decided to release it for NX since they'll probably announce it next year.
Just a hunch. Like what Sony did for TLG.
Sony did it because it was in development hell so may as well just go fuck it and put it on PS4. This went through development hell... Annnd got finished in time to come out in a few months. So holding it back from NA at the last minute, the market this ostensibly appeals to most, is bonkers.

It's a bit a weird situation...I mean it doesn't take a lot to understand that this game is gonna bomb.....but why did they commit to it in first place?
Maybe they thought the ending result would be much better because of Itagaki notwithstanding the really troubled development?
Still if they don't have confidence in their product I don't see how the market could have it.

Its a new strategy:

-Pretend its not coming out.
-Wait for the few fans who care about it to raise hell for it.
-Suddenly now everyone wants it, Operation TattoBaldy starts.
-Nintendo says it listened to fans, makes it Amazon exclusive for retail.
-Fans are happy they made their voice be heard!
-Profit!

Some recent Itagaki Facebook posts:

Surprisingly they reassure me. I'm guessing there will be a new publisher. Which is for the best ironically as even Fatal Frame probably isn't getting a physical release in North America.

Or he's has no idea.

But still, wouldn't you want to play this man's game?

Why would they not release a game that is going to be already finished and already translated to English for Europe at least on the eShop? Their loss since they won't be getting my money. I'm really baffled by this decision, they have an outlet now where they don't have to worry about shelf space and they don't even use it.

According to a 2012 Eurogamer interview, the company developing the engine went out of business.

Valhalla's definitely had a rough time developing Devil's Third. Between THQ dropping the game, the engine and platform changes and struggling to find a new publisher, it's amazing the game is going to see the light of day at all.

Between THQ and Nintendo, they also made a deal with South Korean developer Doobic Games to work on PC and Tablet versions of the game for that market. As far as I can tell, it looks like Doobic also went out of business shortly after that.

NintendoNews is reporting that Devil's Third is still coming to North America.

According to a Nintendo customer service representative, Devil’s Third is still planned for release in the United States. However, the game hasn’t been rated by the ESRB yet.

The game is still listed on Nintendo’s website, where it is shown to be rated M despite not appearing in search results on the ESRB website.

Devil’s Third will release on August 4 in Japan, August 28 in Europe and August 29 in Australia. Nintendo has not announced a release date for North America.

Technically, I've been eagerly awaiting the next Itagaki game since I found out he left Tecmo. I'm probably like one of a handful of people that had enough faith in the guy to still be stoked about Devil's Third, and actually loved the concept, regardless of the gaudy art direction and poor second showing. I suppose I'm just morbidly curious after all this time, and really want to see what an Itagaki Hybrid melee+shooter game with competitive multiplayer would be like.
