Derek Smart just had his manhood taken by RSI's lawyers (Star Citizen)

He of the fake PhD, "neural net AI", and scourge of vending machines has chimed in over Elite's & Star Citizen's developments.

His writing style matches his games and is full of revisionist, self aggrandising BS.

Despite their popularity, my games never really did hit the mainstream in a big way like those publisher backed behemoths that came and went. And this was due to the fact that they were very complex, buggy from early days, and as some would say, unwieldy.

Interplay (the old guard, led by Brian Fargo, Phil Adam et al), were instrumental in helping me bring the game to a large group when they published the Battlecruiser 3000AD v2.0 update in 1999, over three years after Take Two’s disastrous release of the first game, while still in Beta.

Battlecruiser Millennium, released in 2001, added a first person infantry mode which allowed you to start the game in your craft, fly around in space, enter a planet, land, exit in fps mode, do stuff in first person, fly aircraft, drive vehicles etc. The first person infantry mode was rudimentary at best, but it worked and did what it was designed to do.

Much like back in 1996 whereby nobody had even come close to my vision, as of this writing, nobody has come close to making that game, let alone a capital ship combat game that gives you so much control and freedom.

Except me.

It remains the only game of its kind, ever made. And the only all-encompassing capital ship combat game there is. You’re welcome.

Despite the fact that ED was delivered late, mostly unfinished, very buggy (it still is), and for non space sim fans, is as boring as watching paint dry, they delivered as promised.

And since it’s not Derek Smart, or some low hanging gamedev fruit, who has gone out and taken $85m of someone else’s money to make a game that’s all but impossible to make, the mainstream media have remained largely mum about the whole thing, other than doing article, after article, after article about the game, the funding etc.

Right from the start in 2012 when they said that they were using CryEngine3 as their baseline, I was skeptical.

That CE3 engine is, first and foremost, a first person engine.

For me, I already know - for a fact - that they can’t build this game [emphasis his] they’ve pitched, and which I was looking forward to someone making.

It's weird how he points out CE3's limitations with coordinates and then quotes direct from an article about the extensive rebuilding RSI have done to fix that. I'm no fan of Star Citizen's feature creep, but the sheer hypocrisy of Smart and total lack of self-awareness leaves me shaking my head.

Derek Smart's Deskstop Commander (man, I was posting this right when it came out wwaaay back when on these boards, jeez)

That being said, he's kind of not completely wrong about BC Millennium. Now whether that game was fun is another thing, and it took an enormous amount of patching to get there.

edit: Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous will get to the point where the users want them to be, but it's going to take a lot more time than a lot of people are going to wait on. Especially for Star Citizen.

One of my earliest gaming/internet memories was when my 10/11 year old TIE Fighter loving self bought Battlecruiser 3000 AD and the boxart made me think it was going to be the most fucking amazing game of all time. I played it and it was broken as shit.

So I emailed whatever email address was included in the manual, and a few weeks later I got a letter personally addressed to me from Derek Smart with a CD-R included and "Battle Cruiser 3000AD v2" scrawled on it in sharpie. It was still broken as shit.

Never heard of that game before but it sounds intrigueing. Being able to fly, land, raid etc. seemlessly. Might take a look at it.

Derek gets a lot of shit but I had a lot of fun with the free copy of BC3K v2.0 I got from a PC Powerplay CD. The scope was amazing even if there wasn't really much to do. I spent a lot of time flying from system to system and taking the shuttles down into the atmosphere.

I can understand people being pissed off if they had to pay for it though.

Be honest, was it the boxart or the "she really wants it" ads? ;)

First thing I thought of. And I realize it was almost half my lifetime ago.

Funnily enough, Derek Smart's promises are the first thing I thought of when I saw what Star Commander was turning into. Except it appears to be successful.

My feelings on the matter can be summed up as

Derek Smart Derek Smart Derek Smart
Right now, the guy is refreshing his inbox frantically in hopes of getting that NeoGAF account validation email that won't come for another six months.

Ha, honestly don't remember ads for the game, I'd never heard of it before I found it. I was at the age where I went to the game store and if the boxart/box description was awesome, that meant the game was awesome. It was a simpler time.

Smart is kind of the Phil Fish for us older gamers, you either like him or you hate him. I've always enjoyed following his work and occasionally chatting with him on Twitter, usually about our favorite TV shows. His work is always pretty ambitious, but he does have a ton of experience in developing games around open space combat and exploration.

I feel like Derek Smart is the Morgoth to Fish's Sauron. Yeah, Sauron is a big deal now, but compared to the darkness of the past he's relatively mild.

I was wondering if Derek Smart was still around. lol

I imagine he's bitter than he burned any good will he had and couldn't do a kickstarter of his own. lol

I'm kind of curious about what the latest and greatest version of Derek Smart's game looks like. How recently did it come out? What did he change the name to this time? Are there even more ludicrously ambitious features added, or does it focus on fixing up what came before? Is it stable?

Is it fun yet?

I'll admit, I actually got some enjoyment out of BC3000AD and Millennium back in the day. I respect what he tried to do, but it was kind of marred by him coming across as a monumental asshat.

I didn't know he was still around.

Lol at "was indie before it was a thing"

Well, to be fair "Indie" has mainly been used as a marketing term since the start of the previous console gen. There have always been independent developers, but using that status as part of the promotional message and product identity is a comparatively new thing.

Me me me me me!

Good for him being ambitious, but reel back your very expansive ego and produce something new besides how you made this game and these guys aren't gonna reach the saddle of your bloody dev high horse.

True, but this kind of thing can be attributed to just about any game developer from that era.

Here's a free version: http://store.steampowered.com/app/345580/

Please play it and report back.

I mean, there's no shortage of people saying that obvious joke character Cleve Blakemore was also a total sociopath in real life, and he obviously has zero friends in the industry now. So how does someone like Derek Smart keep working?

I think that's the first time I've seen someone mention Cleve on these boards. Now that is one helluva rabbit hole.

Derek Smart sent me a signed copy of Battlecruiser 3000AD a long time ago. I wonder if it's worth anything on eBay.

At some point we were supposed to make a first person Battlecruiser thing using the Duke3D engine. But that never got off.

Oh Derek, I remember when you use to come to my EB Games and talk to me about PC Gaming. You once even gave me a copy of BCM and I didn't have the heart to tell you how terrible it was every time you came in.

Stay classy.

Cloud Imperium should hire Smart to replace the executive producer that left last month
Rumor has it he tried to apply to CIG after the kickstarter and was turned down. Could be true considering how fucking petty Derek sounds.

Also, apparently now Derek Smart is handing out ultimatums to Chris Roberts.

His lack of success combined with his narcissism appears to have caused him to go completely insane.
