As much as I'd love to see Smash Bros ported to NX and expanded, I can't really see it happening. It just makes too much sense, so I can't picture Nintendo doing it.
Now I don't think that a remastered Smash 4 would replace a potential Smash 5 made from the ground-up for the NX platform, I just think that a Smash 4 Remastered would be a means to have a Smash game at launch. I'm pretty sure they'll start from scratch again for Smash 5.

On-topic, what time should we expect the update to go live?

If there would be an NX port they better add Smash Run.

I need that with 4 player online capabilities plus everyone being in the same area. Shoot, might as well call it Smash Run 2.0 lol.

So far they need to port Super Mario Maker, Splatoon and Smash. Anything else? Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival anyone?

Why not just start on smash 5 instead of working on a smash 4 port? Would probably be a better use of time and resources.
Because they need the NX to have a badass launch, & there's no way in hell that they can get Smash 5 ready in time for launch. Might as well make a port of Smash 4, throw in a few extra characters as an incentive, add some new stages & HD remakes of the 3DS stages that work on a console, & get it out there for the platform's launch.

Mario Kart 8 & Zelda U

It's not a ballot box, it's a suggestion box.
That we can agree on.

What? Ports of old titles are what makes a badass launch? The NX will inevitably be backwards compatible anyway and so Smash bros 4 Wii U will be playable on it anyway...

Besides, launching (within a month of release anyway) with melee didn't really do much for gamecubes fortunes. So I don't know what difference a port is supposed to make.

If they have to start from scratch with each new entry instead of reusing significant code/assets, they're damn incompetent. A game like smash begs to be iterated on from previous installments.

On top of that, these games are all fantastic and to not leave them behind would be a tremendous show of not only goodwill for those who bought them (especially if they get a steep discount through the membership service) but also lends credibility to Nintendo's vision for a library that crosses between devices.

Again, judging by the fact that PowerPC isn't handheld friendly (a deal breaker for Iwata's plan for the console & handheld being "like brothers"), is hard to develop for, & it's aging terribly, the odds of the NX Console being backwards compatible are quite slim.

They need original games to convince people to buy the new system. Sure the Wii U didn't sell well but its audience likely consists of a lot of trend setters, consumer who buy the latest thing, so why would they buy a new system that just has the same games they already have? They will want the NX to do well out of the gate and it will not do so if even their core is reluctant to buy it.

Wii U ports, if they do materialise, would likely come later.

They don't need to port Zelda, they're already developing it for NX.

MK8 I feel like is "old enough" to not get a port if that makes any sense.
At most Zelda U will be a Twilight Princess situation (a cross-gen release). It's either Wii U & NX or Wii U only, Nintendo has made it pretty damn clear that Zelda U is still coming to the Wii U no matter what.

Despite literally being called "Smash Ballot".

ok
Did you hear Sakurai say "the winner will get in Smash"?

Iwata literally said the NX is being built to absorb the wii U architecture. Could it be any more on the nose than that?

Damnit, I heard about Great Bay then found out it was fake all in the span of a minute. It's been my most wanted stage since Brawl shipped without it.

Of course not, because people could vote for a joke character like Shrek en masse and compromise the ballot. But I find it funny how people are saying "IT'S JUST A SUGGESTION BOX" to downplay K. Rool's popularity.

"Submit a video game character's name, and we'll consider turning that character into a Smash fighter!"

Sounds like a suggestion box to me.

Pretty sure I'm just saying what it is. There was no mention of Rool in my post. You're literally reading into things now because of today's news.

What else are they supposed to say?

"Submit a video game character's name and they will be playable in Smash, no questions asked!"

That doesn't mean it's not a ballot.

Regardless of whether they launch the NX with Smash 4 Deluxe or wait until a Smash 5 is done, one thing is for sure, no way in hell they're gonna begin a roster with upwards of 50 characters from scratch. They're gonna port Smash 4 and start from there.

On topic, W101 should totally get Mii Costumes.

If you buy Smash Bros. stage DLC, does it pop up during Classic Mode?

I mainly play Smash Bros. single player and I'm curious if buying the stages would be worthwhile for me.

Agree with Gonzo. They can't openly pretend to put Shrek on level with indies on level with Nintendo characters on level with Microsoft characters. But they could at least not use the term 'consider' as a loophole for putting good characters as costumes if Sakurai thinks they're icky.

Yeah, it's like they've always been there. All Stars also.

Also guys, whether this is a ballot or a suggestion box doesn't really matter, because the result is the same; Sakurai will see what newcomers the fanbase is craving. Even if he doesn't put a highly requested character now, that doesn't mean the information is going to be forgotten for future games.

Iwata's exact words on the Ballot:

Please understand that we won't be able to accommodate every request. But Mr.Sakurai and the rest of the staff will take each request into consideration when developing additional fighters.

How does that not sound like a suggestion box?

They don't need to port Zelda, but they are.

It's not a port if it releases and is designed for both hardware at the same time, which it almost certainly will. Heck, if they really are pulling a TP, the Wii version of Twilight princess launched weeks before the gamecube one.

The game is almost certainly in development for Wii U and NX in parallel, and will launch on both in parallel. Neither would be a port.

I'm not saying it's a suggestion box to downplay K. Rool's popularity, I'm saying it's a suggestion box because that's what it is. K. Rool has nothing to do with it. He's clearly popular, and that's why he has a random Mii Fighter costume, but popularity alone doesn't automatically mean a character is going to be DLC. That was never promised or even hinted at.

This is all we know about the ballot process:

"Do you want your favorite video-game character to join the battle in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U? Well, here's your chance. If you post a video-game character’s name, we’ll consider turning that character into a Smash fighter!"

It's not an election or a popularity contest.

It probably would, though. The only time Nintendo has ever considered remastering a Smash game was their backup plan for if Sakurai didn't return for Brawl.

Every song should be available on every stage. Most of them would be set to 0% by default, but you should have the option of enabling them in a case like this. There are three perfectly good Dr. Mario songs that belong on a Dr. Mario stage.

I've been asking this for years. Alongside the Dr. Mario stage, I'd like to switch some songs around in the DK/Zelda/Pokémon stages.

I see where Sakurai is going with this

Step 1: Nintendo announces a K. Rool costume for the Mii Fighters

Step 2: Gonzo acts surprisingly sane, but is secretly filled with anguish

Step 3: Sakurai's henchmen rig Gonzo's TV, so that his TV will only play reruns of Steve Irwin's "The Crocodile Hunters," with commercials for Visine.

Step 4: Gonzo finally goes mad, dresses up like a king, and steals all the bananas from the nearby supermarket. The cops defeat him by bopping him on the head every time he throws his boomerang crown.

Step 5: President Obama gives a speech about domestic terrorism, citing the Gonzo banana theft incident. "This is not connected to ISIS," Obama says at a press conference. "This is the result of shattered dreams."

Step 6: Touched by what happened, a Lifetime movie is made telling Gonzo's story. It stars Barbara Walters and Oprah Winfrey.

Step 7: Kanye West is so moved by the Lifetime movie he calls on Nintendo to be compassionate and do the right thing. While massaging Kanye's shoulders, Reggie promises, "We will."

Step 8: Instead of making K. Rool a character, Nintendo decides to memorialize Gonzo by making Gonzo, the Muppet, a playable character in Smash. Sakurai justifies this change of policy by citing world events.

As you can see, it's all part of Sakurai's long-con to bring Muppets to Smash Bros.

Sorry, I got confused when someone mentioned Twilight Princess. My mistake.

Smash-GAF will be hired by Nintendo to design Smash 5 by committee

Just imagine. Smash 5's newcomers will be ripped straight from Smash fangames.

Ridley, Toad, Waluigi, Isaac, Chibi-Robo, Mach Rider, Saki Amamiya, Krystal, Porky, Gooey, Geno, Bomberman, Rayman, Ristar, Cloud Strife, Crono, Black Mage, Lloyd Irving, Sora, Chun-Li, Evil Ryu, Mega Man X, Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Shadow the Hedgehog, Super Sonic, Blade the Echidna, Blue the Hedgehog, Son Goku, Ichigo Kurosaki, Naruto Uzimaki, Inu Yasha, Mr. Incredible, and Weegee.

Pretty much this.

I don't think this is really working like an ordinary ballot. I don't know if 'suggestion box' is the perfect way to describe it, but it's pretty clearly more than just a popularity contest. They're doing more than just looking at who gets the most votes. There's a reason they're asking players to describe why they think a character would be a good fighter.

You joke, but this does explain this year's E3.

I think it's cool at that K. Rool at least got in in some form. Didn't care for the idea at first, but eventually Gonzo actually had me hoping.

This is the ESRB leak all over again!
