Horizon: Zero Dawn Trailer (Guerrilla, post-apocalyptic pre-historic adventure)

Yeah... but so does the redhead in the picture, whose the main character in the game. Even the guy with wolf pelt on his head looks different to his "final" look in the E3 trailer. So the dino-robot you see in this concept, could very well be the same one we see in the E3 trailer. Then again, I could be wrong. In the end, we could even have a fight of these two beasts (T-Rex vs whatever look-alike)
like in the silly final battle of Jurassic World
.
Good point. Character designs could change in development, but I do hope that the dinobot with the more slender jaws is a separate being entirely. More variety would be great. Also,
what's wrong with the final battle in Jurassic World? I thought it was epic.

This game makes me so happy and invokes my imagination from the possibilities like imagine if where they store that green liquid that the machines harvest is a giant armored wolly mammoth type creature with armored heavy artillery escort being rhinos or triceratops and they had missiles pods and cannons. Also imagine another apex predator to worry about in different regions like in one region a pack of mech wolves or raptors that had smart ai and would ambush you or in one region a Saber tooth that looks like the one from zoids but it can cloak and stalk you. Also think for a second what if at the end alloy goes to where the machine forbidden zone is and there's a computer with loads of information about technology and she gains the ability to make a mech she can pilot like guys imagine a fully customizable mech that looks like an amalgamation of the machines from this game where you customize the weapons armor arms legs and color of this mech all salvaged from defeated enemies and to not break the balance your armor chips off like what she did to the machine she fought in the demo and you have to salvage to repair it as well it would be freaking awesome

I'm very curious to find out how they handle the weapons and crafting. Will they go the more traditional route with patterns/diagrams to collect or a more free-form customization akin to FO4? I'm hoping the latter (wishful thinking), I always love being able to put personal touches to my in-game items even if it's only color/appearance. Would be cool if everybody is able to create their own unique looking Aloy.

Imho there is still some room to be concerned about the RPG part. In the interviews it seemed really important for them to emphasize the "action" of Action-RPG when they talked about the genre.
According to Eurogamer the original idea for the game was also a "third-person, open-world action adventure, with light role-playing influences". This article was even retweeted by the GG twitter account, so it seems for them it was ok to call the RPG system "lightweight".
Some cool things were already confirmed, but I hope they'll show a bit more soon enough and we don't have to wait for E3 to see some of these elements.

They will show a bit more at Gamescom in a few days.

As of right we know you thwere is skill tree with three paths, crafting for armor, weapons and ammunition. Towns, economy, lots of side quests and various tribes with different goals. I'm curious to learn about the dialogue system and the length of the game. I have not seen anything regarding length other than a comment about them needing to keep the moment to moment gameplay interesting for dozens of hours.

I too would like see some gameplay of her walking around a town and maybe interacting with another tribe. Or some other situation where she is just exploring the world with no combat.

Yep, but I think it'll be a similar demo like we saw at E3. Just live gameplay this time and they probably solve it with other mechanics.
At least Sony said they won't reveal many new details.

Edit:

I also really want to know more about the quest design. They have one Witcher 3 quest designer, so I'm pretty confident they'll be good, but there still could be a lot of "find X" or "kill Y" fetch quests. As soon as I know there'll be a good side quest system behind the game, I'll be happy enough and buy it day one.

This is their first foray into RPGs. I don't think the RPG side is going to be deep. But then, I also don't see why this needs to be a "concern", when there is such a (apparently) competent action component and when we have barely seen anything about the game. It is not like they made huge promises and failed them. We just have seen very little of it. Those guys said it is an RPG, so I doubt they are making it like Tomb Raider and calling it a day. Those are industry veterans, they know having crafting and perks doesn't make it an RPG.

I believe people are getting carried away by all that is being said, filling in the blanks with their imagination and then feeling concerned that their imagination is going too wild. Maybe the best to do is take a deep breath and wait for the next showing of the game. Being concerned for a huge game from a new IP that was shown ONCE makes little sense.

Pretty much yeah, apparently.

Pretty much. GG has also said nothing about certain RPG mechanics like dialogue system, morality/reputation system. But you know what? The potential lack of these things doesn't make it any less of an RPG.

At the very least, we know that Horizon has character stats, lifebars, towns, in-game economy with currency/trading, quest, items, loot, crafting.

Just those things alone immediately qualifies it as an RPG. Mechanics alone don't make an RPG. It's the complete package of how the moment-to-moment gameplay works, both in-combat and out-of-combat.

Is there a rule where RPGs need to have terrible janky combat in order to be considered an RPG?

If Mass Effect & The Witcher are considered RPGs, there's no reason this game can't be called an RPG (Besides the fact that the combat & animations aren't janky enough to be called an RPG).

They should do whatever they want and I buy it when I think it looks awesome.

And when I think it looks shit I will still post in every thread to point out how shit it is.

Why's it gotta be one or the other?

They've already said there's lots of RPG elements in the game so I can't wait till they show those off.

Me too. The action should just be one component of the game. Exploration and interaction with other characters is something I'm really keen on learning more about.

Did you expect them to reveal all monsters in one video?

also we know 6 dinos not just 5

7 if we count the bug-like creature in kz:sf (easter egg). I'm sure it will be in the final game :)

Does it bother anyone else that people seem to be serious when they think a team should reveal 90% of their game the moment it is shown? Leaving no chance for surprises or discovery? It is really starting to bother me that people are like this now. Has it always been like this? I can't recall over my other 25 years people being so downright incapable of patience. Same thing happens with No Mans Sky. Even after Sean Murray stated very early on that since the game is all about discovery they will not be showing much of it so the players can have that thrill of finding something new and unknown.

And it gets so bad that just because we haven't seen anything else, that actually translates that there is nothing else to see. It's so odd.

It's a different dino. This is the one from the e3 demo

I just hope as an RPG its closer to The Witcher 3 than, say, Shadows of Mordor (now, before you cry foul, SoM also had an open world, economy, skill trees, side missions, etc.) Basically, I want depth to the RPG mechanics and side quests instead of just being there but really being an action game.

I really wasn't worried at all about it until the Eurogamer article that kept mentioning how there are light RPG elements.

It doesn't bother me. I would describe it as baffling how you can post on an enthusiast forum like GAF and not understand PR cycle.

Unless of course this "I don't understand what this game is about" is some form of criticism of the PR cycle without saying "I don't like PR cycles."

Not liking the PR cycle is pretty easily circumvented by just waiting until the game is out, so maybe people don't like to make that argument.
(Because the quality of the game is wholly unaffected by the quality and rollout of the marketing.)

Guerrilla described the RPG elements as in middle of something like Mordor on the left and The Witcher 3 on the right. So don't expect TW3 level of depth.

Has there been new info since E3?

A few tidbits about traversal, but nothing major.

Where did you find that comparison? I could only find the quote in a Polygon article from senior producer Mark Norris, in which he placed Horizon between GTA and Assassin's Creed which are positioned on the left side of the spectrum and Skyrim and Fallout on the right. http://www.polygon.com/2015/6/24/8834897/horizon-zero-dawn-e3-2015-preview-gta-skyrim

I don't think that Horizon is necessarily les deep when it concerns its RPG elements than those of the Witcher. Different? very likely.

I'm just throwing AC/Far Cry/Mordor in the same category of RPG lite. They didn't mention Mordor.

The lore is what is looking to be interesting.

Where did these
not
"dinos" come from? Who or what created them?

Maybe some sort of man-made AI which adapted to the collapse of human civilisation by becoming apex predators in the form of dinos. Whatever the lore, I'm sure it'll be interesting.

I was more referring to the comparison to the Witcher, but it's not important really. We can only make some judgement when the game is actually out. But for now I will take Mark Norris's word for it when he calls Horizon a fully fledged rpg.

I'd be in the dick
The things I'm most curious about are dialogue systems, interaction/reputation with other tribes, and if free form exploration will be rewarded or if it's mostly guided by quests. I would love to go off the beaten path, explore some ruins, and find some lore or items without the game telling me to go there first.

I think what makes something an RPG to me, is quest systems, dialog trees and armour stats/customisation. So if it has all those things, it's an RPG to me.
