First Dragon Quest XI (PS4/3DS) screenshots

That must be why people are saying the characters look photoshopped in

Yes, there are people making the same judgment you are based on the shots. But there are also more people saying it looks beautiful. And the people in agreement with you may well have said the same thing about VIII back when.

Anyway, glad you're still buying it. I suspect you won't be as unhappy with the visuals when you do.

Dat last PS4 screenshot!

I can't wait to see these enemies in action, bouncing around with orchestrated music in the background.

HNNNNGGGGG

still hate the characters clothing color palette though. seriously, purple and booger green? why?

My educated guess would be that those colors are opposite/complementary. It's normal, and most of the time the process used when it comes to character design. People tend to use this technique to simplify the color palette to create a unique look that stays on you. Also, if it's anything like DQ VIII at any point in the game, I wouldn't be surprise to see different set of clothes being given to you depending of the story and locations you're in.

My only concern so far with this game, since they haven't talked about some of the plot elements, is whether or not it will have some kind of party system. Is it gonna be like DQ VIII, where you meet different characters across your journey and they join you, or is gonna be like like the Dragon Warrior games where you build your team/party with monsters you meet/defeat?

They haven't said yet. Seems like it will have a set protagonist at least but they have not shown any other party members.

I really really hope it's like DQVIII.
I want real party members with proper personalities, not some AI dummy like IX.
That would be quite the deal-breaker for me.

I own every other U.S. Dragon Warrior/Quest so I'm sure I'll make do somehow.

I always thought VIII was beautiful. If you had been playing the series up until then, they had all been sprite-based, and being immersed in a super-saturated cel-shaded type of 3D world made it the most immersive game in the series.

Not saying the environments in XI don't look beautiful either - they do, they just aren't the same art style as the characters. This was not the case with DQVIII. The color palette and level of detail were much more similar and gave it a more natural look.

I would bet that you wouldn't argue that the look of the PS4 game is more cohesive than the 3DS version, would you?

One other person on the previous page = consensus.

Okay.

There has been more than two people who have mentioned. It's fine that you don't think that the contrast is unnatural, but some people do.

I like it better than the SD form on 3DS but that's more of an artstyle thing. I think the PS4 screens look fine. Mostly they are missing the finer screen effects that would make everything blend together better. By release I am sure everything will flow much better.

The contrast isn't unnatural it's that they haven't done the work to blend it better yet. That would be much later in development. The 3DS has much less detail so they can work with much broader strokes.

I've only noticed one person say they look "photoshopped in", so yeah, no.

I don't understand why you are trying to make this a big deal with moving goal-posts. Some people think it contrasts badly get over it.

These posts are literally from the first couple of pages.

There's something really funky with this and DQ:Builders, the monsters looks like they were superimposed on a background of some other game. Heck, everything looks strangely out of place to me for some reason.

Maybe its the black lines?

It looks weird to me as well, I think it's because the characters have flat textures and the environments don't.

Something's really off with that combat screenshot.

But whatever, day fucking one.

Looks really great, although the contrast between the cartoony models and pseudo-realistic environments are a little unusual.

The dual screen mechanic would have still made me consider, but interest went out the window as soon as they announced that only the intro is simultaneous.

I said it before, and i say it again, the PS4 version needs Cel-Shading. Right now those semi-realistic surroundings don't match the cartoony style of the chars and the monsters.

Other than that, looks awesome.

But some serious wow @ those 3DS screens, incredible ... are we sure this isn't n3DS only? At least it has to be n3DS enhanced.

And another thing i will gladly say again: BRING BOTH VERSIONS TO THE WEST!

Both versions look beautiful, although I'm still slightly put off by the clash between the environment and character models in the PS4 version.

It looks amazing... but also weird
I mean, it's like they're using different artstyles... ennemis looks cell shaded while the overworld seems to be semi-realistic with a weird lighting...

Looks pretty impressive but somehow off. The environments and the models don't mesh that well. The 3DS version is better in that regard but that IQ reeks of bullshots.

These screens are just making it harder to pick one. If they were on the same hardware family, I could just cross-buy. Decisions, decisions...

Complementary would be purple and yellow actually, or red and green.

DQVIII on PS2

Or V for DS if you don't have a way to play PS2 games

It's dual 2D/3D for the prologue and then you have to make a choice, but you can change it any time you want after that point. They just don't display simultaneously after the prologue.

I guess they make you choose one option at the point of no return, but it has been said that you can switch between 3D and 2D whenever you want.

Thanks, i was afraid i couldn't change styles after the intro

Looks astounding.

I'm amused at how the combat in Dragon Quest gets to remain forever turn-based while the combat in every Final Fantasy (even remakes of FFVII) must now be anything BUT turn-based.

I really like how the 3DS version looks. I prefer to play DQ games on a handheld so I hope that I'll be able to play that version on my 3DS. PS4 version looks breathtaking tho, I hope it's different enough from the 3DS version so I can have the incentive to play them both.

PS4 version looks beautiful! Man if you told me some of these jrpgs would be coming to the PS4, a year ago I would have told you to gtfo with that bs. Can't wait.

I have already posted a couple of screenshots, and there are a couple of the shots in the OP, that demonstrate this statement to be nonsense. Sorry.

More? No. About the same? Yes. So I guess you win your bet, but lose on making your point.

i can play that one on my ipad but it's getting mixed reviews... really ?

The mobile version has no voice acting or orchestrated music, plus you have to play it in portrait orientation. PS2 version is definitive by a mile.

I have already posted a couple of screenshots, and there are a couple of the shots in the OP, that make this statement objectively nonsense. Sorry.
No, I am sorry that you can't see what is in the pictures you posted yourself.

Good day sir.
