I buy a lot of games, so when I have a good reason (in my mind) to cross one off my list, I jump at it. I've been a Road Warrior fan since I was probably too young to watch it...
Then came the "magnum opus, magnum opus magnum opus! Magnum opus?..." trailers and marketing. It's a really cheesy, dramatic name to begin with, but being assaulted by it constantly drove me further into the "don't buy" direction. Annoyed as I was by that, I watched some recent gameplay and it has that "B team" vibe, like DA2 while BioWare focused more on ME3. Comparing Mad Max to Just Cause 3 is night and day. Obviously the setting is different, but I'm talking more quality/content-wise.
I'm not closed minded to the point I have written it off, but my expectations aren't high right now and I'll need some deep feedback before I reconsider it. I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer, and have no intention of trying to convince others to agree with me... If anything, I hope I'm wrong and it's GotY
There are lots of things to like about it and I'm trying to stay up to date to convince myself to get excited again, ha ha!
I'm not gonna lie, I think it's pretty obnoxious too. They are really trying to hammer that point in, it's like, I get it already just give it a rest. I think it's a bit funny about the B team comment because this is the A Team from Avalanche and Just Cause 3 is the B team. But hell, in my eyes both of them are doing stellar work. As far as your other critcisms:

O, for sure. My buds have said it's the most rewarding experience of their lives. I essentially raised my youngest sister from the age of 2-12 and it was so rewarding watching her grow and become the person she's become, but it also taught me that I'm extremely selfish as I was happy when my folks had the time to finally focus on her like she deserved. Plus I really enjoy having money. I'm genuinely happy for you though.

Really thinking of grabbing the PC version (that 50% off expires soon from GMG) but I just can't talk myself into it.

Friends with person who is reviewing game for a major outlet, told me it's a 7 at best
edit: I want this game to be good, I've been sold on all the preview stuff too. Was upset to hear this negative prognosis

I'm really tempted, I've seen it pretty low for Steam prices from multiple re-sellers, but I'm just not sure yet.
Obviously MGS V is going to eat almost all my time, but I did take a chance on Shadows of Mordor because it looked cool and I loved it. I'm not a Tolkien guy at all, but I love Mad Max (both old and new film(s)).
Hoping to see some impressions from those of you that take the plunge. I don't necessarily trust "I played it for 1-2 hours at an event and I was bored". Doesn't seem like a game that shows well in that sense, similar to MGS.

I'm tempted but I decided to get Forza 6 Ultimate which is £82! Yeah, kinda stupid but it's one of the few games I really want this year. Maybe in October or November I'll get Mad Mxx seeing as Xcom 2 has moved to Feb or March (can't remember which) next year.

in a sea of MSGVs and Fallout 4s, Halo 5s, etc, yes a 7 isn't quite cutting it for me. I can't afford to buy everything day one, so a 7 is going to have to wait til it's half-off at the least.
I'm playing Mad Max no matter what, just might not be til it gets some Steam discount love

It always has been. For at least the past 15 years at least.
Most reviewers really don't use the 1-10 scale properly, so I think people are generally conditioned to believe anything below an 8 is pretty much garbage.

Impressions and videos have already sold me on this. It looks fun, looks great, and looks to be long (50 hours). That's really all I need. If it gets 7's, cool.

I totally prefer the "SKIP/RENT/BUY" 3-step grade scale or something similar. I'd say what Kotaku does but I think even that is too binary

It's interesting that with games a score of 70% to some is "This game is shit, doomed, sent to die". When you look at a movie score with an overall 70% on Rotten Tomatoes for instance I would definitely think this would perk the interest of the same individuals as being reviewed well.
Yes I'm aware movies aren't $60, but if you go see one and get the popcorn drinks etc, it comes damn close.

lol @ a 7 being a negative prognosis. Man I read old gaming magazines when moving my bowels and it's awesome how many good games got 7's and 8's and even some 6/6.5's. It's a shame we've gotten to a point with a lot of people where a 7 is a bad score.
I mean, personally I'd give Mordor a 7 at best and I enjoyed that game very much.

I don't understand why games release during the beginning of the week, either. Also, there are conflicting posts in this thread. Some are saying JaseC said it's unlocking tomorrow at 10AM PST. Others are saying not until Monday... Looking for a definitive answer on this. Wondering how 10AM PST is a thing....

Fuck it,just bought it at GMG for $36.00. All the videos I've seen over the last couple hours and some of the impressions here have sold me on it.
In other words, those middle tier games that are just plain good. Now everything has to be at least 9 or it sucks. Speaking of which, I wish a had a dollar for ever 9 I felt was less than a 7 and for every score around 7 that I felt was actually a 9. I'd be a pretty rich man.

The game looks different enough from the Gibson flicks that I grew up with I think I'm gonna need some of those old nostalgic noise to get over the hump.

There are only english voices in this game. All other recent warner games were fully translated.

Yup. And the reason he has that mask it's implied that it may be him thats survived getting smashed in the 1st movie. That's a bit of a stretch, but it gives new meaning to "I live, I die, I live again." It's a nice touch.
Is it the same engine? That'd be news to me. Especially since it's completely different studios. I thought it was an iteration of their Just Cause 2 engine? I hope for an icon removal too, because you are absolutely right.

It's seem a copy paste of of the Shadow of Modor combat (the same engine), did they add difficulty level or something ? (SOM was pretty goods but a little way too on the easy side with prompt remove)

You can use the handbrake to drift somewhat but you need to change the control scheme to enable it. Its not on by default.

There's about as much continuity in Mad Max as there is in The Legend of Zelda, i.e. little/none. The old movies don't fit together with Fury Road. MM1 has Max as a member of more or less a legit police force, the apocalypse either hasn't happened yet or has only very recently happened and society is still limping on with him as a full blown adult. In Fury Road the apocalypse happened so long ago that new societies with their own culture have sprung up and it feels like Max and Furiosa wouldn't have been alive long enough to remember the before time - only the really old women and Immortan Joe seem to be old enough. But Max explicitly says that he was once a cop, implying it's "kind of" the same timeline as the old one? But then Max has a family and other people he seems to have failed to save, and the flashbacks are of a child of the wrong gender being killed for it to be a flashback to the first movie. He is credited as Max Rockatansky just like the old movies and we're given no real indication that he's supposed to be a different person. There's a fan theory he's the kid from MM2 that took on his persona, but from what we know of that kid he grew up with his tribe, became the leader and went north, and the way that narrator speaks (as an old man) doesn't feel remotely similar to Fury Road mad max.

I've played a few hours and it really reminds me of the Ubisoft open world formula. I think I've played too many of these games because I really don't enjoy playing Mad Max.

I just like the idea of Toecutter being "reincarnated" into Immortan Joe as it really puts a bigger meaning as to why Nux is so confident in saying, "I live, I die, I live again." If anything it's just my simple interpretation.
I thought that was such a cool fan theory when I read that.
