"Wii U" section of Wal-Mart Changed to "Nintendo"?

Agreed. In fact, it made me curious how the three would line up and I think it works nicely.

This is super-fast and we obviously have no idea what the real branding would be, but just to give an idea...

So sexy. Nice contrasts. Differentiates from each console.

The PS3 greatest hits were red cases and looked fine so I don't buy the argument the red looks out of place.

The red looked out of place when the Wii U cover arts were baby blue.

Yeah, this. There's no reason why the New Super Mario Bros one should still be used when they've got theupdated Mario Party 10 one but I bet you they still do somewhere

I still see that specific NSMB art used everywhere. It's especially prevalent on cheap merchandise like party favors, but it still shows up on children's clothing or backpacks.

Nintendo really needs to throw away art from the last 10 years that they keep using and finally start always using the most recent art for characters.

The Mario Party 10 art is great, but they never use it anywhere.

Wow! Did Nintendo really yell at people like that for that classified all video game stuff as a "Nintendo"? Unreal.

Yes, because using their name in that way can be bad for the trademark. If it were to be used as a common generic word the courts could rule it so.

Xerox has the same fear.

From Wikipedia
The word "xerox" is used as a synonym for "photocopy" (both as a noun and a verb) in many areas; for example,"I xeroxed the document and placed it on your desk." or "Please make a xeroxed copy of the articles and hand them out a week before the exam". Though both are common, the company does not condone such uses of its trademark, and is particularly concerned about the ongoing use of Xerox as a verb as this places the trademark in danger of being declared a generic word by the courts. The company is engaged in an ongoing advertising and media campaign to convince the public that Xerox should not be used as a verb.

The site I got it from says its for Mario's anniversary which wouldn't make too much sense since both Link and Pikachu are included

Ignore if I'm a bit late but I don't recognize the sword Link has in that render... Specially the yellow/gold details... Maybe is just my memory, anyone can help? Doesn't look like Hyrule Warriors or ALBW art...

Yeah, it's a new render. However I wouldn't read too much into it. It got me excited too but the fact that the Pikachu render is new too makes me think they just got fancy new marketing renders for these characters.

Gotta wonder why the Mario one is old though, jeez.

Wow, I actually thought companies would like that their names become synonymous with a product like that. Does the Coca Cola company feel that way too? Because practically everyone asks for a Coke instead of a cola even if its not Coca Cola.

I like it. Though I feel like it would work better if it was moved to the left like how the PS4 logo is.

Gamestop got new marketing like a month or so ago. Instead of the sections Wii U and 3DS they sent a big Mario and pikachu head in its place. Main color on the other marketing was red.

Hopefully red returns in full force with the NX, since it's refreshing to see it again.

Interesting to see that new Link render too.

I know it's a mock-up. But I was thinking that Nintendo wouldn't feature the exact Nintendo logo (red with the border) in the NX logo. However I do hope 'Nintendo' is part of the logo, like with the DS/3DS. Both the Wii and Wii U logos don't have 'Nintendo' in it, I think all their previous console logos did. While 'Wii' did become huge on it's own, it fell into irrelevancy with Wii U. Nintendo is such a strong brand name, so make use of that!

Not sure if its been posted,
but just went to my local asda they stopped
stocking Wii U titles a while back now but they
have a new Nintendo sign too

actually beginning to get fairly hyped now

That's true. Even the Gamecube had their name in it.

Everyone knows the Nintendo 64 (N64) Super Nintendo, Nintendo Entertainment System.

As for Game Boy, it was on an entirely other level. Game Boy brand was strong and had recognition for retaining the name for 3 generations of systems up until the DS. It also had Nintendo in the title so everyone knew it was by Nintendo. Think like how Sony is with Sony Playstation, That's how Game Boy was seen in the handheld space, Nintendo Game Boy.

For what?

This is just a marketing / branding change in preperation for the holidays.

I know, I know.

but the prospect of a new nintendo system has always been
an exciting event since I was a little kid.

all except the Wii U which completely underwhelmed me when
it was announced but the last 2 years of Nintendo's software
output on the system has me getting way too excited.

I know its just store displays but it still feels like the wheels
are turning yknow

Yeh, I mean its a step in a new direction for sure and I can see why they've done it now before their first mobile game launches.

But we still have like a year till any new hardware.

Agree with you on software. Wii U is my first Nintendo console and I love the games for it.

I don't really get why people call the Game Boy Color its own generation. It was really basically the same as the DSi and New 3DS.

It's probably because, unlike DSi and New 3DS, Game Boy Color had many prominent games exclusive to it, along with many games that were enhanced for it and were marketed as GBC games, despite being playable on an old Game Boy. I'm pretty sure nearly every GB/GBC game that came out after the Color's launch was labeled as a GBC game even if it was playable on the Game Boy.

The DSi and New 3DS just don't compare to the GBC when it comes to exclusives and enhanced games. Though DSi did have many exclusive digital games.

Well, even if we reduced it to 2 generations, the Game Boy and its revisions had a very, very long generation before the GBA came out in 2001. Good steady hardware refreshes and good software and Pokemon kept Game Boy alive for 11 years.

Adding a color screen was huge for Game Boy , plus it had a faster processor and had more RAM.

The DSi and New 3DS are nowhere near that level as far as an upgrade goes.

That's a really weird way of looking at it. I would never even think of considering the Color as something like the DSi and New 3DS. It was a big jump for the Game Boy, making it compete with handhelds like the Neo Geo Pocket Color.

Target has also changed to the Nintendo section

I saw them redoing my Target after I saw this thread and wondered if it was doing it too, went back today and yes it is changed to Nintendo

I can get that it might have felt more like a new generation due to it's high level of exclusives, but it really wasn't.

The relative spec bumps of the DSi and New 3DS are actually very similar to that of the GBC. The color screen was impressive, sure, but the rest of the hardware was largely the same.

Won't Sony and Microsoft come out with the PS5 and the Xbox Two to compete with the NX at some point in the coming years though?

Yesssss.

Just for this example of them using NX as the final name, it looked really weird to have the logo centered. Because it didn't seem balanced with the word 'Nintendo' circled around but 'NX' just off to the side. So might as well just push everything to the side. And now it looks great to me :D

Unless they make 'NX' like a superscript/in smaller font size after 'Nintendo' which I guess would work if it was centered.

Someone may have posted this already, but this is definitely more widespread than just walmart. It's an overall marketing change by nintendo that has occurred or will occur soon at most retail locations that sell nintendo products. I've noticed it at GameStop and Target specifically already.

I think it's a good idea to unify the brand, which may or may not be foreshadowing the move to the "NX".

Even then MS will obviously stick with the green theme like always, and Sony's been using blue since the Vita, they even had blue PS3 banners for a period (but went back to their regular black I think).

I'd say Sony has stuck with blue since PS2. The logo was blue and the boot up and OS has a lot of blue as well.

EDIT: oops, you meant cases. But anyway, I think they'll continue to use blue for a very long time across systems and physical media like cases. It has become their color.

By that logic, the Wii was simply a GameCube revision, and not its next gen successor.

Honestly, I don't think the NX Platform boxes need to be that big, more so if they do go with cartridges that work on all form factors.

Oh my this would be perfect. Each company represented very nicely and different from each other. Now I hope NX uses red as it's main aesthetic color! Wii U's logo and aesthetic is a real mess. Is it white like Wii? Or blue because of the U logo?? and what about that Yellow edge on the border of the Wii U banner in all box art? Does't make sense at all. AT. ALL!

The Wii didn't only last on the market for about two years.

This stopgap pattern is something that Nintendo has done for every handheld except the GBA, which was replaced prematurely due to competition from the PSP.
