New King of Fighters XIV teaser reveals Leona and CHANG KOEHAN

I'm still on board but man do I miss 13 sprites.

I don't know what it is about these teeth but there's something cringy or creepy about them.

I get why they probably went with a yellow top for Leona (the color would go well with the blue hair) but it seems like such an odd choice for her character.

Wonder what Ralf and Clark will look like this time, classic size or plus size. Leona losing that grenade belt, or whatever it was, probably means that they also won't have it.

The gameplay looks awesome.

Can't say awesome just yet but it certainly has potential. Even if the game ends up being butt ugly there is still a good chance that the gameplay might feel very much like classic KOF, going by the newest trailer.

Hope they reveal the new mechanics soon.

The classic 3v3 style is great (especially as it was done in XIII where meter management played a huge role) but it would be interesting if they give tagging another try.

It would also be something that would set XIV apart from the other major fighting games since non of SFV, GG, BB, Tekken 7 etc. focus on tagging. It would also speed up the pace of the matches.
 
I gathered all the '?'s' in that list were for new characters. I could be wrong though.

Yeah I thought so too, but all the other new characters have unique identifiers like "Kim's wife" or "new comer prisoner". I assumed the ? marks where them not being able to translate the kanji but I'm probably wrong.

Just a quick question about KOF in general. I've been playing 98 recently and love how your teammates and the opponents teammates watch the match at opposite ends of the stage and react to the match and the defeated characters lie on the floor and stuff like that. I then played 13 and realised that it didn't have anyone other than the fighters on screen and it really disappointed me. I looked back at previous games and realised that they too had gotten rid of this. I don't expect it back in 14 at all, but I was wondering if there was a reason as to why they got rid of it?

Yeah I was watching some 98 videos and noticed that as well. Seemed like a really cool feature.

It was probably due to the additional work needed in animating their background animations.

The best chance of us getting the feature back is definitely XIV since they are using 3D models, though then again the Maximum Impact games didn't have the feature either iirc.

It was cool how you could mash in the older games and the teammates would jump in from the background to break a throw for you.

I prefer the belt without all that volume from the grenades, so that's fine.
Her pants now having a camouflage pattern is a neat touch, and I wonder if that's supposed to work with the now yellow top as camouflage for some story element involving a mission in a desert environment - I like the older darker colors, so I wonder if the new ones have particular relevance...

Agreed, though not sure if there will be an explanation since they seem to be freshening up a lot of the character designs in general.

It is kind of funny though that they revealed both Chang and her in the same trailer since a relationship of some kind between them was kind of hinted at in the past iirc.

I really hope they start releasing official art soon (by Hiroaki, Ogura etc.) so we can get a better look.

That hint appears to have been a programming typo in 98, where Leona would salute Chang (a salute which I think was meant for Ralf, I'd have to recheck if she salutes Ralf there, like she does Heidern and Clark) - he's the 2nd member of the Kim team while Ralf's the 2nd in her team.

I remember seeing some art before and also this in the wiki:

In KOF 98, Leona mysteriously salutes Chang Koehan and belittles Ralf. This was originally thought to be a bug in the game mechanics, but developers add that it was her showing respect for "real power". The exact meaning of this statement remains unclear though it became a popular subject in fan doujinshi for a time.

So they could do something with it if they liked but yeah, you're theory makes sense either way. Thanks!

If they are gonna have a 60 person cast like the leak implies... for them to have KOFXIII or GGXrd level visuals it will cost them an astronomical amount of money. And even if they had the budget, is there enough talent out there to produce models and animations of such quality within the time frame? You have to decide between the graphics and roster. whynotboth.gif can''t apply here unfortunately.

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.

Most important info from this is:

-Producer seems to be aware of the complaints about the art style doesn't seem to care, as long as the gameplay is good.
-We all probably figured but it pretty much confirms this is the start of a new arc.
Seems that he's speaking for character visual design and not so much system wide art style or graphics.

I could only dream of ArcSystemsWork doing a KOF or Samurai Shodown game! I would crownd fund the living heck of it!

An ugly game is an ugly game forever, and KOF XIV is an UGLY game.

Well...that's not what most players play KOF for. For most, it's the the large character roster that makes a KOF game. And that's what made KOF the clear moneymaker for SNK, even though games like MOTW and Last Blade were decidedly much prettier games on the MVS (not to mention what Capcom was running with on the CPS2 and CPS3 at the time).

Again, trying to get things back to a "MVS era" pace, where they can churn KOF games out quicker, and add oodles of characters each time, seems to be what SNKP is aiming for, starting with XIV. Not everybody is going to like that, but it's what I imagine will most delight KOF players out east.

Says who? The competitive scene in 13 is like 4 characters and dont even get me started on 2002. I very rarely see any character variety.

I actually don't mind the graphics at all, just the art style is atrocious. I'll be surprised if they don't screw up the other main characters, as Kyo and Iori already look pretty bad.
 
It's so weird coming in here seeing the reactions to the graphics,than going to that fallout thread and seeing completely different opinions. Guess its a franchise/developer thing. I mean it doesn't look to good but if game play is good that's all that matter's
 
Hope the netcode is up to snuff this time. I honestly believe the shit netcode was a big contributing factor for why 12/13 sold so bad. For those who played the steam release how was it?

Yeah, plus the small roster was part of the reason XII got so much heat.

Np, the game isn't as stagnant in character selection as some people think. There was even a Leona in top 8 for that tournament.

There was good character variety at SCR too iirc.

Strangely in that pic, it actually doesn't look bad. Maybe they just need to get some better Antialiasing and soften the whole image a bit

definetly, but i desperately need at least the classic costumes, cause those awful redesigns arent doing anything for me

Ah ok fair enough. Don't know why people are complaining about the costumes though. They're are far from being the worst problem here.

And scrap the awful stage they keep showing.

I think my biggest issue with that stage is that it feels like it's design for a 3D fighting game but KOF is only on a 2D plane.

Looking at the rumored roster list , there is no black characters in KOF XIV. I don't get it with how huge the roster is and what it covers.

People here were kind of taken aback as well, changing the design of clothes is one thing but they changed Kyo's hair style and hair color as well.

Looking at the rumored roster list , there is no black characters in KOF XIV.

XIII didn't have any either.
