New King of Fighters XIV teaser reveals Leona and CHANG KOEHAN

People here were kind of taken aback as well, changing the design of clothes is one thing but they changed Kyo's hair style and hair color as well.

Did they? It looks they same too me. Can't see that image though.

Chang model is pretty good:

Make Kyo and Iori look like prototypes made while researching art direction for the game!

I think this screen shows that graphically the game can be salvageable with a higher quality lighting, shadows and materials.

Agreed, they also need to fix the faces. Chang's is fine, but the boy doll shit they're trying with Iori and Kyo just isn't working.

I mean it doesn't look to good but if game play is good that's all that matter's

I wish that was the case... but an ugly game just isn't going to attract as many people. Also if they can't budget decent looking graphics... what chance there's actually a marketing budget for this game?

It'll just be another Yatagarasu... amazing gameplay, very rough looking, and most people don't even know it exists.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if "boy doll" was what they're going with Kyo and Iori, even after the graphics get touched up. They are the series' two main posterboys, after all.

Either fix those or drop close ups. SFIV's best animation effort went into cinematic ultras and pre-ultra close ups, if you don't want to waste a lot of time polishing those, just drop them.

Yeah that looks nice, if there was just a little more STYLE to the game to make pit look a little less generic and stand out more, they'd be on to something.

Was kind of randomly pausing through the trailer and Leona's key poses at least seem to be on point:

There also seems to be decent detail in her clothing. The pants look decked out with pockets (the V pockets are a nice touch), belts etc., the boots look good too with laces showing and dangling, the gloves are also fancier than usual.

He looks way better in the fan edit. Hope SNK works on his face tho, the other 3 seem fine to me.

Just wondering how much of what we are seeing is just unfinished so far. The models seem detailed in some areas (clothes, accessories) but in others they seem very early (Kyo's face, like you mentioned).

There's also a lack of fancy camera work, you would think that they would definitely go for that with the switch to 3D. The only move to use it in the trailer was Iori's neomax.

Great vid.

The timing on XIV's animation is one of the main things that stood out when first watching the trailer.

They are 'faking' the classic KOF feel of motion/timing rather well in 3D.

I wonder if they're using the 3D key frames that they originally used to create KOF13.

Like, just taking out the "trace over them" step, and putting the models themselves straight into the game.

That would certainly make sense and save them a lot of time.

It's kind of funny how some people were complaining about hit stop and yet that vid shows that XIV's is pretty much the same as in XIII.

KOF is a series know for releasing new games in 10+ old systems and still managing to stay relevant. SNK knows its audience.

I feel like the people who were complaining about the hitstop, i'm just gonna say it, probably don't or didn't play KOF13 long enough to be adjusted to it.

China and pirates in Mexico and South America!!!

Looks to line up pretty well with XIII

It looks correct enough in motion to me, but my issue is with the lighting and texturing work. That white rim lighting is just doing horrible things to the look of this and its creating jaggies all over the place. Likely it was used to make them pop out from the background more since the old 2d lineworking isn't very doable without pulling a Guilty Gear UV map (fuck that. Shit is time consuming and it fucks up lighting/shading and forces you to hand paint frame by frame shading. Its easier to hand animate than do what GG does).

They need somebody to go in hard on specular, Ambient occlusion, depth, and a few other maps alongside of adjusting several things on the lighting and its properties to stop washing out characters and making things look so low end.

All the problems with this game could be solved with some dedicated texture work.

Guess they should have gone the cell shaded route with this one...

I never played KOF, but always admired their graphics style..

Sad thing they are in the process of giving that up.

Yeah. The animation was definitely not the problem with this game. I think at the very least, XIV will feel and play like a proper KOF game. It's just not looking that great.

Tbh that's good enough for me if it has a great roster.

They would also easily be able to add more characters via dlc if they like, doubt the method they are using to create characters is costing them much.

Here's is some speculation from the rumoured roster translated by EvilYagami from Cyberfanatix based on ALX's work. It's funny how this rumour came out back in February.

Evil Yagami is known for scouring the depths of the planet for any sort of news and rumours, no matter how ridiculous they seem, showing how much he loves the game, even though it made most of his posts rather incredible.

However, this time, the crazyness suddenly became a possibility, as PRISONER CHANG turned up in the 2nd trailer. ALX is confident in the source of information, but that’s been taken down…
Let’s chill and discuss the possibilities:

Team 01 : China Team (/ Tung Fu Rue / ) ~ Possible Characters ~ ( Jin Chonshu / Jin Chonrei )
Tung Fu Rue, okay, the Jin brothers? At the end of Real Bout, their curse of immortality was lifted and they went on to become normal kids. Whatever, the bottom line is that they are a copy and paste model that can save money. Verdict: POSSIBLE

Team 02 : Japan Team ( Kyo Kusanagi / Benimaru Nikaido / Goro Daimon ) Team 03 : Fatal Fury Team ( Terry Bogard / Andy Bogard / Joe Higashi ) Team 04 : Art of Fighting Team ( Ryo Sakazaki / Robert Garcia / Yuri Sakazaki ) Team 05 : K’ Team ( K’ / Maxima / Kula Diamond )

Obvious mainstays. One of the AOF team could always be swapped out for Mr Karate, however. Verdict: Pretty much guaranteed

Team 06 : Kim Team ( Kim Kaphwan / Kim’s Master / Myeng Swuk )

Myeng Swuk is Kim’s wife (taken from a wiki). If she’s a headswap, heck, if they are all headswaps, why not. Personally I feel a bit weird beating up Kim’s wife. Then again, we’ve been beating up Andy’s girlfriend for over a decade… Why they don’t just bring in the whole family, beats me. All headswaps, cheapest cast ever.

Team 07 : Criminal Team ( Chang Koehan / Choi Bounge / Newcomer Prisoner )

I’m not really surprised to see Mr “1 extra hit for the combo video” Chang back in action, but Choi wasn’t really used in the West and on the whole greatly disliked. Even if he was greatly underestimated, and actually quite cheap. Very popular in China apparently.

Team 08 : Women Fighters Team ( Mai Shiranui / King / Alice )

Alice from the Pachinko series. To paraphrase: ‘We’re gonna make gamers into Pachinko fans!’ Yeah, well I wouldn’t be surprised if Alice just gets the boot out of spite. A female Terry Bogard would be fun yet have to play quite differently to have any sort of merit, like Shingo, otherwise you might as well just make her an alternate DLC costume for Terry. Without Alice of course, Yuri has her place.

Team 09 : Ikari Team ( Ralf Jones / Clark Still / Leona Heidern ) Team 10 : Psycho Soldier team ( Athena Asamiya / Sie Kensou / Chin Gentsai ) Team 11 : Yagami Team ( Iori Yagami / Mature / Vice )

Mainstays. Chin isn’t a priority, however.

Team 12 : Mexico Team ( Ramon / Angel / Tizoc )

This has huge potential, and could drive Mexico & Latin America into a complete frenzy as they finally stop playing 2002 and get a PS4 (skipping a whole console generation in the process). Or, on the other hand, hey look what’s this 2002um about? Is it 2002plusplus? :p

Team 13 : Palace Wan Team ( Acting Mask Girl / Teenage Girl Singer with Electric Element / Mysterious Hooded Man )

No comment. A Chinese team posted by a Chinese source on a Chinese forum, and this was before the Chinese buy out. Still, there remains the very strong possibility of a XDZW crossover, with Kaoru Kuraki and Brazel being top contenders. Who said the guest appearance by Terry and Beni (and now Kyo and Iori) in Tencent games had to be one way?

Team 14 : South Town Team ( Geese Howard / Billy Kane / Butler )

Alx has now updated this saying the third character is a butler, so Ripper and Hopper are out. Geese shouldn’t be anywhere in the KOF timeline but whatever. Nightmare Geese, yada yada. But where’s Mr Big? Where’s Lily Kane?

Team 15 : South America Team ( Brazilian Ninja / Handicap Boxer / Pretty Latin Girl )

See team Mexico. Just give them all infinites and the crowds will get hype.

Team 16 : Alternate World Team ( Nakoruru / Love Heart / Mui Mui )

One of these characters is from a classic series and doesn’t fit in KOF, while the other (Mui Mui) is from a rhythm game that is no longer in the Apple store so it’s absolutely pointless in terms of marketing. Still, Hanzo did appear in Maximum Impact and I think I need to play with him again right now. Love Heart is from another Pachinko game. Sooooo yeah, if the Pachinko games were still out there, this would make perfect sense, and in fact still does (would they cancel these characters if work had already begun?)

Mid-Boss : ( Russian Billionaire )

Yeah sure, whatever. Used to do business with Geese and Rugal, yup.

Final-Boss : ( Non-Human Species )

And after doing business, injected himself with special virus or Orochi blood or alien dna, and goes out of control, bla bla bla.
