Cloud announced for Smash Bros

All of the third-parties represented in Smash Bros. are massive successes, and they all happen to originate in Japan.

Sonic the Hedgehog - 150 million
Final Fantasy - 110 million
Pac-Man - 43.2 million (plus 30 million active arcade players in 1982)
Metal Gear - 41.2 million
Street Fighter - 36 million
Mega Man - 30 million

Super Mario, Pokémon, The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Wii Fit, and Kirby are the only Nintendo series in Smash Bros. that fall within this range.

TBF if we're going by sales Rayman has sold 26 million so he's not so far behind Mega Man as a franchise.

Apparently Crash Bandicoot has sold 50m over the entire franchise.

Let's get on the Crash Smash hype train!

I think he mistakes Braver to be a forward special, and his slash against Mega Man to be his fair. Both looks to be fair and nair, respectively. And And I think the limit break meter would be a special move since it is more of a charging move than a thing similar to Little Mac's.
The fact that he actually goes into a pose while the "LIMIT" bar charges makes me think you are right. However, that's a bit odd of Sakurai - he's usually more faithful to the material in these situations.

I'm excited for the amiibo. I wonder which pose they'll go with.

Also, quick question. If I was to buy the lucas amiibo for example, would I be able to use it without buying the DLC? I should probably ask somewhere else, but the question just popped in my head.

They also missed that the second jump is taken straight from Dissidia.

Someone was able to find a full size render of Cloud. So that'll be the amiibo pose. Makes sense since it's based on his FFVII artwork.

I had this conspiracy theory idea after Cloud's reveal the other day but

what if the Activision Skylanders deal for Bowser and DK was a tradeoff for Crash or Spyro in Smash

Crash would be really dope.

I wouldn't want to see Spyro because he would most likely be his Skylanders variant and eww.

I dunno, I bet Sakurai would definitely pull a Pac-Man and just flatout reject Skylanders Spyro in that scenario like he did with Ghostly Adventures Pac-Man.

At first, I think the limit break meter works like Mac's that is the FF7 original mechanic, but the trailer would have to explicitly display that, like in Mac's case we actually see that in his trailer it fills up as the takes a beating or getting hits. In Cloud's case, he seems to be in a paused animation while the limit break bar fills up, and the bar only displays during that animation sequence rather than seeing it while he gets hit or makes a hit. My theory is that limit break meter works like WFT's deep breathing mechanic.

Not true. Cloud does nearly all of them including Omnislash and Ver 5 in Kindom Hearts 2

I forgot about that, even though it looks nothing like it does in AC. He has Braver and Cross Slash (sans rune animations), too.

Kinda sucks that they gave Zack all of the cool ones in Birth by Sleep (Blade Beam, Meteorain, a way more faithfully anmimated Omnislash)

According to John Harker, Ubisoft did approach Nintendo about Rayman in Smash a few years back, but it was Sakurai's show and he wasn't feeling it.

So he has criteria. It's just that none of us will ever know what that criteria is.

This explains why even Ubisoft was confused concerning the Rayman fake

Yo-kai Watch hasn't proven itself to have staying power, and it's not popular outside of Japan yet. I'd wait five years or so before determining if it's worthy of being in Smash Bros.

Honestly, I also don't think Yo-kai Watch is "special" enough to be included -- Level-5 set out to manufacture a multimedia monster by throwing Japan's big three (Pokémon, Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter) into a blender. It doesn't have any soul. Everything about the franchise feels forced. I wouldn't describe Yo-kai Watch as a landmark title, whereas Pac-Man, Mega Man 2, Sonic the Hedgehog, Street Fighter II, Final Fantasy VII, and Metal Gear Solid are among the most fondly remembered games of the last three decades.

Waaay behind in commenting and replying to this, but you're completely and utterly wrong here. I know you have not played the games making this comment. Doubt you've even read the reviews. The game and writing are very charming. This is one of its highlights, the game does have issues, many addressed in the sequel. The game blends Battle Network, Pokemon, and DQ.

The show is also much more entertaining than Pokemon in its current state (making western references and even references to looney tunes). It seems Pokemon got super babied out like they are afraid of western audiences becoming offended.

But I will agree and say that the cat is forced into the mascot role pretty badly, but it seems to work for the kids so hey.

Actually in this case, it's true, because Cloud is playable in Final Fantasy Explorers for 3DS coming out end of January 2016.

So this announcement and the December Brawl Direct or whatever that update seems to me to be a part of that awareness driver

Funny thing is that's not even Cloud in that game, its gear to dress up as Cloud if I'm not mistaken. It's not even a cameo of the character lol. I can at least say that Snake got a remake of his original game on the GameCube it's at least something noteworthy.

Still it's really damn cool to have him in and can't wait to hear the music we get. This feels like the game that represents my childhood.

I do feel a bit off about this whole thing though. It feels kind of like Sakurai is just throwing his own "rules" out the window, Cloud really is stretching it as far as consistency with the Nintendo theme. That bothers me for some reason. I'm one of those people that is either hot or cold, and being luke warm agitates me greatly, swaying back and forth or drifting off into a totally different direction. But I guess that's what makes people interesting. He jokes about Chrom being just another swordsman yet adds Cloud and compares him to Ike at the end with the final smash display. Glad he's having fun with this though, I can tell he enjoys everything that comes positive about working on these games.

But nothing about his final smash showing is made to be a comparison to Ike. It was just a fun reference to the final fight with Sephiroth.

Not everybody has much care about Cloud and thinks it's silly when other more Nintendo-affiliated characters would be better.

I dunno...I'd have to see some of his moves before making a decision. Any taunts?

So...Cloud in Smash means Cloud amiibo. Cloud amiibo potentially means 8-bit Cloud in Mario Maker!

Would be pretty cool if it was in the style of a FF1 sprite.

Since someone said that we have two more stages which isn't in case. That's big if it's not pirate ship leftover. I strongly believe Cloud and Midgar have been worked on for long time so it might be between Mario Maker and Duck Hunt. So we might have two more stages to go.

Warning: Sorry for lazy edits. I was in rush with the image.

Edited: for people who don't understand the images, there are 6 available slots for stages. Due to omega stages, there are two slots per stages.

Didn't the same people found 3 additional roster spots found as well?

So if Cloud takes 1, next Smash Bros direct is the last one ever. I take it the last two are the ballot winners then? (And I'm sure we all can agree that Wolf is going to end up being released.) Or would it be 3 slots for characters already in development like Cloud was and 2 additional characters for the ballot winners added later?

edit: I shouldn't read too much into this and hope/expect even more characters.

I really love the concept behind Midgar stage where we would fight over Summon Materia in order to summon the summons. Yeah, it is going to be a lot of fun with friends.

Right, We should expect 2 more characters, along with Cloud; and Midgar and maybe two stages.

Gamexplain analysis: [...]

what are you doing gamexplain? lol How can you talk so much and still get it all wrong.

Like, i can't tell for sure that they are wrong, but that analisis looks like overthinking. Serious overthinking. The "safe" thing would be to say:

(and i'm not going to say anything surprising here, as this is likely what most people think when seeing that trailer)

- what they called his sideB is his fair (forward aerial)
- what they called his fair is his nair (neutral aerial)
- what they called his downB is his sideB
- the limit charging move is his downB and gives you one power up special (B) attack each time you have it changed (you may or may not lose the chage from getting hit)
- saying that his smash attacks also get powered up seems like another crazy/risky bet. It would surprise me if the limit charge attack had so many uses. The cyclone like attack could simply be his downB when fully changed (because if the limit move is indeed his downB, it would have to do something if the player press downB again once it is fully charged). Like, after showing cloud charging the limit bar, the trailer shows four powered up moves. You have four special attacks. Coincidence? i think not!! :p The safe thing to say is that the trailer shows, in order, the powered up versions of: sideB, neutralB, upB, and downB.

Just seems like the safe thing to say.

Did anyone post this? 5 Reasons why Clouds inclusion is the most important event in Smash history

5) The Announcement didn't leak in any kind considering that he must have been in development for a while already. (He says a year or more, but i don't think it was that long)

4) The inclusion proves that any "rules" fans created to predict the characters that could be in Smash Bros are bullshit

3) Maybe mainseries Final Fantasy games could come to Nintendo consoles again starting with 15 to NX

2) Cloud doesn't only represent JRPG's, but also the fact that SQ left Nintendo starting with FF7, so him being in Smash could be a sign that bridges have been rebuild between both companies, wich is something Iwata said that would be done (rebuilding relations to third parties)

1) FFVII: R might be coming to NX. Shulks inclusion exposed Smash fans to Xenoblade, and now we have a lot of people waiting for X. Clouds inclusion might bring Final Fantasy fans with no exposure to Nintendo games to check out Nintendo games and vice versa. Both companies can profit from that.

I'm not so sure about 1, but 2-5 are really good points in my eyes :)

I started playing FFVII yesterday after my last attempt eons ago only lasted a few hours (I'm really not big on most JRPG's without the word 'Mario' in them) and I'm already halfway through the game and what the fuck why is it so much goofier and upbeat than everything else surrounding Cloud nowadays?

It reminds me of a slightly more mature Super Mario RPG in all the right ways and I'm surprisingly having a ton of fun with it but god damn does it seem like this particular branch of the FF series dramatically changed in tone over the years. I'm honestly legitimately worried that the FF7 remake is going to ditch a lot of what I'm liking about this game so far, even if it'll help leverage the admittedly-now-cheesy dramatic bits I've gone through.

Once I'm done with it is the Advent Children movie (which I watched way back but had zero context for) or the other spinoffs/prequels worth checking out?

My guess is Cloud's limit break bar works the same as Lucario's aura, but isn't a permanent buff. Taking damage fills it and gives you a few attacks or an amount of time to go nuts.

Once I'm done with it is the Advent Children movie (which I watched way back but had zero context for) or the other spinoffs/prequels worth checking out?

Glad you're enjoying Goofy Cloud. Mopey Cloud is from AC mostly. Wish they'd run more with Cloud as we know him in the game.

AC is worth watching, but only the complete version as it fills in a few gaps from the original AC release that should never have been there in the first place.

Sakaguchi was still around for VII (I believe he did some story stuff) so that might have helped.

The best thing about Cloud being announced is watching Max's reaction vid for it.
I FUCKING LOVE VIDEOGAMES SO MUCH

I'm sure you can find people who liked Sonic 2006 too.

You can, in general when you find them, what they liked the most about Sonic 2006 - beside the OST - is the whole concept of the thing. They know the shortcoming of the gameplay but still, it's the kind of Sonic they want to see as a "concept" (that sort of "Sonic Adventure 3" feel) and that's what keep them bear all the bugs and graphical inegality.

Personally, it's not enough for me to like the game but i can understand an opposite opinion. So yeah, Sonic 3D can be great or simply just nice, Cloud is also one of my favorite video game character (even if i kinda hate how Square show him nowaday)

All opinion like "Yeah this character is shit, it's only because of popularity" is nonsensical for me. It's unfortunate you don't like Cloud but I don't think you should make that judgment more absolute than it really is.

Now you know why people don't really like how Cloud is represented those days, only keeping the "emo" part and ditching all the comic and goofy moment the original game had.

It was a strange almost non coherent mix but it's why i loved FFVII so much.

Because Nomura mistook Cloud for Squall when making Advent Children.
Sakaguchi was still around for VII (I believe he did some story stuff) so that might have helped.
Many of the story scenarios were written by Nojima, Sakaguchi, and Nomura in tandem. The idea to kill Aeris was Sakaguchi's, for instance.

Did anyone post this? 5 Reasons why Clouds inclusion is the most important event in Smash history

I'm not so sure about 1, but 2-5 are really good points in my eyes :)

While I agree that Cloud's inclusion is a big one, I don't agree that it's the most important event in Smash history based on his points.

5. All the DLC characters were never leaked by developers as far as I know. So it's not just Cloud's development being secretive. The only reason why Ryu and Roy got leaked is because of the patch file being datamined. In Cloud's case, the dev team may have taken certain measures not to happen again in Smash updates as it really ruins the surprise for everybody.

4. It's just fans that think that they fully knew of these "rules" by Sakurai. Sakurai has been known to defy some of these "rules" set by fans' expectations.

3. Probably, but I'm keeping my expectations low on that one. While SE hasn't been hot on Nintendo consoles as far as the latest FF games are concerned, SE has been producing FF remakes and spin-offs to Nintendo consoles since the GC/GBA days, so Nintendo has been getting some FF games, just not the latest main series ones.

2. While Square and Nintendo had a strained relationship in the past, I think their bad past is really been overblown. Square (Enix) has been supplying RPGs to Nintendo consoles (especially in the handheld department) up to now, from FF spin-offs and remakes, mainline DQ titles, to new RPG franchises like TWEWY and Bravely Default. Though I agree that Cloud's inclusion may foster a collaboration project between Nintendo and SE, maybe a Super Mario RPG 2 for example. It happened with Sonic and SEGA, so maybe there's a chance.

1. While I hope that happens eventually, again I'm keeping my expectations low since we still don't have a clear idea on what NX is, and we don't even know how far FFVII:R has been developed. Snake's inclusion in Brawl didn't net the Wii, or even a Wii U a port of the latest at that time MGS4 for example.

Now you know why people don't really like how Cloud is represented those days, only keeping the "emo" part and ditching all the comic and goofy moment the original game had.

It was a strange almost non coherent mix but it's why i loved FFVII so much.
I mean, I can easily see how a more mature/serious take can dramatically improve scenes like the first major confrontation with Reno as Sector 7 blows up, Cloud's time with Sephiroth and obviously when Aeris/Aerith (which name is supposed to be her proper spelling?) dies. I can see how it'd have looked cool back in the 90's at least. Stuff like the switch between FMV and pre-rendered backgrounds even now is also neat, but obviously loses a ton if you're not playing on an old blurry TV where the 'switch' isn't as obvious. Basically a ton of visual tricks that would've blown my socks off as a kid but now you can easily see the seams, which you can't as much with something say like, Ocarina of Time. So with that all in mind, I think the remake's fully justified.

I just don't want that stuff improved at the cost of stuff like your entire party threatening to castrate a mafia don or Red XIII fucking about in a sailor outfit because it's too light-hearted and/or would look awkward in today's graphics.

The salt coming from Cloud's announcement is hilarious.
"Haha look at them, they are salty xDDDD lmoa"

It seems like people aren't allowed to dislike an inclusion in the Smash roster.

On a more relevant note, I hope the music selection for Midgar isn't as awful as it is for Suzaku Castle. FF has so much good music it would be a crime to have two songs with the other four songs being remixes of the two main songs.

Sonic 06 was terrible but I generally agree its kind of the direction I wanted the series to go in (multiple character stories adventure 1&2 style each with unique gameplay).

Oh they are completely allowed to dislike any inclusion and share their opinions on it. Just I am allowed to disagree with their opinions and even laugh when they get overly bothered by fictional characters.

People's salt over Cloud is just as entertaining as people's joy over Cloud. It's all fun.

If you like acting immature in internet forums, then yeah, I guess you are allowed to "laugh at them" or whatever. I guess to respect that some people don't want/like certain characters in a game they are passionate towards is too much to ask for, right?

Yes let's add that one character from that old Kingdom Hearts game Square already completely remade on PS2 who cameo one time in that one level. And also he starred with a bunch of other main Final Fantasy characters in this music game! But let's take his appearance he had on Sony consoles and that one movie!

.... Stop trying to make sense of it.
