UK: Rise of the Tomb Raider sells <60k units at launch

After the GTA4 DLC...this is the second dumb exclusive deal they've made.

Sorry but Tomb Raider is not that popular anymore and imo, even not AAA game.

What was dumb about the GTAIV DLC deal?

And by what metric is RotTR not a triple-A game?! It's got a massive budget, lavish production values, great visuals and has received heavy marketing - and lastly its predecessor sold over 7 million copies. They are pretty much all the tick-boxes for a triple-A game, are they not?

They didn't harm the PlayStation 2, look at Grand Theft Auto

The idea of a third party exclusive was much different then than it is now, the market has changed dramatically. There's a reason why they rarely exist anymore. Seriously when was the last time a big publisher made a single console-exclusive game that wasn't moneyhatted? I can only think of PC stuff like Anno or The Sims 4.

Well, everybody but Square-Enix knew right from the start that this timed exclusivity deal was a terrible idea that would damage the brand. I would love to know how much money they got to withhold the game from their main audience for a year. Probably not enough.

I can't help but feel a modicum of well-deserved Schadenfreude.

I would have bought this game if I had the money but Im pretty broke atm. Once I sell my gaming pc and get more funds Ill buy it. From day 1 we all knew this deal was a bad idea but I understand why the developers had to do it. Clearly they had trouble with Square behind the scenes probably budget related issues, so microsoft came in and helped out in return they get a timed exclusive. This seems to have done more damage than good though. Why didnt they go to sony themselves? dont they get along or something? or was sony not interested? id be interested to know why it had to be microsoft.

The problem with the PS4 launch next year is that Sony is bound to have a much better exclusive line up next year compared to this year, not that this year isnt hard to beat sony first party has been underwhelming this gen.
The ironic part in all this is, they'd have been better off if they were PS exclusive this holiday rather than Xbox just because of how sparse sony's line up is compared to how strong MS is.

MS has a strong line up this holiday?

Sales of Tomb Raider and Halo point to the contrary.

Surface of Me

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
Both Microsoft and Squeenix dun goofed.

What a cock up.

I feel like it would've done a lot better not launching on the same day as Fallout 4. At the same time, I agree I dont think this worked out very well for either party of the deal overall.

You clearly dont understand what they meant by strong holiday.

Any chance of them backtracking a bit on the exclusivity deal and releasing the PS4 version quicker?

The money hat seems to have a few holes in it now.

Are we seriously saying halo sales are LOW just because they're lower than usual halo sales? It still sold a solid amount for an exclusive game in 5 days.

RotTR will be fine in 2016, the Steam version is early 2016 and PS4 is November 2016. Staggering the releases sucks but if word of mouth about the Bone version is positive (and it is), people will pick it up when it's out for the platform they own.

I don't know about this. I mean, I am sure that people are going to buy it on PS4, but, if the game doesn't come with a lot of stuff added or at a reduced price, I doubt it is Day One Buy for most people, especially considering it's going to probably get out a period crowded with big release.

... maybe it's time for a reboot? With tombs n stuff.... I'd buy it!

I never understood the logic of rebooting a franchise like that. Even if there was nowhere else for the series to go taking the entire concept, ditching it and going in a totally different direction with it makes little sense to me.

Doesn't bother me in this case, but the attraction to series entry in name alone eludes me.

that fake Kaz twitter account is a goldmine

It absolutely is.

Who decided it was a great idea to launch Rise of the Tomb Raider against Fallout 4?. Those figures are shocking indeed, obviously would have been better if it wasn't a timed exclusive (but how much better though)

Thing is, I don't think the hype will be there for the game when it will be coming to PS4. If I recall correctly, the timed exclusivity was rumored to be 6 months for PC and a year for PS4. There are many high profile games coming out in fall 2016, and a year late port of a cross gen game in 2016 in a franchise that isn't a huge name anymore will have a hard time selling well. I don't think SE should bank on that version selling too much.

Perhaps they made a profit regardless due to the check MS wrote them for the exclusivity, but as someone else said, I'm not sure if it was worth the damage to the brand. Poor decision overall.

I really hope this title does well in the end. Impressions are great so far and it scored great with the critics.

If I owned a One, I would definately have bought it, since most games now are either MP shooter or open world. Not that those games are bad, but TR sticks out to me in the current AAA space. Kind of odd, actually, since there I feel there were a lot of non-open world (open as in GTA) third person action adventures last gen.

Also, fake Kaz is amazing, haha.

What a travesty that this sells 60k and something like Fallout 4 probably sold millions.

To be fair, this is UK. You shouldn't compare the total millions of F4 to this UK number of TR. Still, this is really bad.

Not a chance, they'd have to pay out a ton of cash to MS if they'd even allow it. Also this seems as appropriate of a post as any to drop this off:

That's a pretty bad number when compared to the previous installation, including the factor that it is only available on 1 platform.

Thanks man, it's shame really. I just think that the PS4 and X1 will only have a handful of true exclusives that will break the 1 million quota.

inFAMOUS SS, Killzone Shadow Fall,Drive Club and Bloodborne are all over the 2 million sold mark. PS4 exclusives have done quite well considering the middling reviews for some of them.

I doubt it'll sell much when it launches on PS4 next year if it's full price.
If i go into a store and see the Xbone version way cheaper than the PS4 version, i won't want to buy it unless i'm a dedicated fan waiting for the release. That's the issue i feel it has next year alongside releasing amongst other big titles that are new and not a year old.

Youd be surprised how long people are willing to wait for a game as long as its good. It doesnt need hype. The tomb raider fans on PS4 and PC are ready and waiting. I think well be surprised at how much better it does once it goes multiplat.

I don't agree. This was heading for poor sales anyway, regardless of fallout 4. And the rest of my post still stands. Times exclusives damage franchises in the long term.

They are a bad idea.
Won't hurt SF, or Shenmue. Didn't hurt Monster Hunter. You just have to make sure you know your audience. This was just a stupid deal that didn't benefit the fans, everyone is waiting to play the game.

I don't think Fallout 4 had that much of an effect on the sales. I think it's the fact that people know the game is coming out on PC and PS4 and will most likely be better when it does. It would have been to their benefit to have kept that exclusivity window under wraps.

Well, it can't possibly do worse, can it?

I think the poster is right. I think RotTR is going to be yesterday's news next year. I struggle to see anyone still caring about this game a year from now.

True pal but what he said came across as a blanket statement if you know what I mean

I believe my statement to be true of all timed exclusives in the current market. If you can find an example that is not from the PS2 era that disproves that then I'll be glad to hear it.

SF and Sheumue aren't out yet.

I don't know anything about monster hunter.

In a year, when the PS4 version releases, won't they be in the same situation all over again? Releasing among much higher profile titles that are not a year old?

Eh it's fine. We'll still get our third game.

Really? If SE was disappointed in the last games sales, and they resorted to a Microsoft moneyhat to publish this one that backfired massively, I'd say the series is in danger of being left on the backburner.

Good luck with that definitive edition selling much launching in November 2016. It will be in just as bad a position. Possibly worse.

what's it releasing against? i can't say i follow release dates so far in advance? is it launching on the same day as something like fallout 4?

Releasing the same week as Fallout was the worst idea. Released for execution basically. Should've been December / January.

according to wikipedia

At Gamescom 2015, Square Enix accidentally revealed that a third game in the rebooted series was in development

Whether or not it gets released is another thing entirely it could get cancelled mid development who knows. well just have to wait and see.

Well more proof that the exclusivity deal was a mistake , especially given how the previous game was enjoyed by many across the different platforms. it should have stayed multiplat.

NOt only did it release at the worst time possible but on a limited market .i hope that money was good S-E.
Well at least you can make a "definitive edition" for PC later

Pretty much, unless they are smart and go for a summer release to escape that

I'll totally pick this up next year on a Xmas sale for 10 euro on PSN.

Good games are aplenty.

Wallets filled with money aren't.

It's a solid amount, but low on Halo metrics.

It's a year old game by that point. The hype's (if there every was any) long past, if S-E can't summon a maelstorm of marketing...

I never said they sold well, but when it came to exclusives MS trounced Sony this holiday and imo this whole gen so far, Sony just didnt seem prepared for this gen on a game basis while MS wasn't ready with the console itself.
