New King of Fighters XIV teaser reveals Leona and CHANG KOEHAN

That rumored list looks good since Mature, Billy, and Vice are in the mix, but we'll see if it's true once more characters are revealed.
Chizuru and Yamazaki need to make a return.

As someone who likes monsters and mages, what names should I be looking out for in a KoF title? First time looking at one.

It's hard to think of direct fits to those categories in KoF - the closest the msinline series has to monsters are "Sailor Moon villain" types that look human but claim not to be and have special powers, like the Orochi saga antagonists. Iori and Leona have gone feral in the past and in their supers though.
More monstrous-looking characters tend to be bosses that got killed, like Mukai, Magaki and boss Saiki.

The series also leans less towards mages than it does toward cleric-ish types, like Goeniz, and to some extent Chizuru.

You might want to look into the Hizoku/Flying Brigand ninja characters like Lin and Duo Lon - and especially Lon/Ron, who's yet to be directly playable.
Some of their abilities lean toward the freakish, but the story's been building toward their importance since 2000 - from what's known of Lon, he might scracth your itch if they finally give him a role in the gameplay beyond being original Zero's striker.

You know, I've always wondered what happened to Bao. They built him up as having this dragon spirit / super-psycho power during NESTS and then after 2001 - nothing. I know he's not really popular
outside of doujin
, but I'd still like to see the culmination of the Psycho Soldier Team / Hizoku arc eventually, and that would mean bringing him back.

Anyone else catch this?

There's already subtle changes to the graphics. Kind of weird to be honest. Not sure how much of it is changed. But the boxes thing was interesting.

I knew there the graphics had improved since the reveal trailer. This game has the potential to look quite decent if a lot of work is put into it.

Holy shit at the boxes tease. They hid that so damn well.

^48 characters would be awesome and the number falls in line with the old rumor from 2013 which said there would be around 50 characters.

Oh and in case you guys missed them, here are some interesting comments from the YT comparison vid from before:

Rumors and leaks say that the second trailer was actually recorded right around the time they announced the game (it was the same build) and the game has dramatically changed its appearance since then, which we'll see at PlayStation Experience in December. As for the visual aesthetic, they're supposedly aiming for was an oil painting look, which seemingly failed and didn't come across like how they'd liked. As such, they're now doing something different with it visually (I imagine some kinda cel shaded filter and different lighting, aside from just improved details to the actual models).

Also from the leaker, there will be a OP song, which can be heard in 1st PV. Next PV in Dec will show the number of characters Some CVs will change. By CV, that's character voice. SNKP gonna replace some of those voice actors. So yeah, PlayStation Experience should be the defining time on how accurate the rumors are. With it being playable and showing the character select screen and all.

Good to see they are gonna modify the art style.

Edit: 7000 years later, didn't read the "rumor" part on the comments.

Yeah I heard about this in another thread. Really hope it's true. What does PV mean though?

Problem is like May Lee and K'9999, she's a Eolith creation.

Unless SNK bought the rights off them, chances of her returning are slim.

Not really, the only issue was K9999 and that was because he pissed off the people behind Akira. So they redesigned him to Nameless.

Nameless, May Lee and Angel are all in KOF2002UM.

Nice. Was just looking for some new info earlier today.

Wow subtle, but when they freeze frame like that you can see there's been pretty big changes to the characters between trailer 1 and 2. I much prefer how they look now than before.

Looks like a much better translation from 2D animated to 3D and less like a "Want to make games? Learn to program for the hottest games at the biggest companies in your spare time at ______ university" daytime television commercial.

So was the announcement trailer even an older build? Because there are some changes in models, effects and shaders used in the reveal trailer and this new one.

Also, I thought that the "oil painting look" worked pretty well with Chang, while they seemed to have no idea what to go for with the other characters, everything just looked glossy as fuck. And, that stage they keep showing better be a place holder and not an actual stage in the game.

PSX can't come soon enough.

That's honestly not surprising, considering some chars (like Mai and Robert) have had their VAS replaced as it is. But I wonder who is next. It still sounded like Kyo and Iori in the PVs, at least.

Yeah, but can they improve the animations?

yeah thats the part that needs a lotta work. hitstop seems hella long but then again it matches up relatively closely with that XII vid so maybe im wrong. the game could use way bigger and more obvious hit sparks tho so i hope they add those. that would help with the readability as well as making the animations look like they have more impact.

The animations look pretty on point when compared to the previous game, though.

Edit: As someone said above, the hitstop and the lack of flash is what makes it look weird.

I'm not talking about timing, I'm talking about the actual animations.

Look at the video and not how well tension across the character's body is shown. Look at how XIII Kyo's jacket moves compared to how the jacket on XIV Kyo stays stuck to his body as part of the model. The actual animation and communication of weight and movement is lacking in the 3D version.

You can't blame KOF for that. Every 3D fighter animates worse than their 2D counterparts.

Yeah this is true. All 3D games are like this, not just KOF. I mean, we'll probably never see this level of animation detail in a 3D Street Fighter game, for example:

SF5's animations are quite good though, the issue is the same as in 2D fighters, when you cancel one animation into the other, sometimes there's not a good 'flow'.

To be fair that seems to be part of the new design, Kyo's jacket is no longer open and can't really sway like before.

As mentioned earlier, the flash is missing though, it doesn't make sense for SNK not to use some fancy camera angles with the switch to 3D (especially since they used zooms etc. even in XIII). The only move in the trailers to use anything is Iori's neomax. Could just be an old build.

Either way, even if the rumor about much improved visuals isn't true, I'll still be cool with the game if it plays like a classic KOF and has 48 characters.

SFV also has like 16 characters though.

The flow when cancelling animations was so good in XIII -_-

I think we'll get their eventually but we'll need full physics based rendering ( tension, compression, shear, bending and torsion) of clothing, as well as muscular and skeletal structures. So could be a little while.

Hopefully we will see something more recent from KOFXIV at PSX

I hope the leaked roster isn't real, takes so much excitement from a fighter to have no roster surprises.

Can't wait for PSX, hopefully a new reveal with a look at a more recent build.

I'm expecting it to be bogus tbh, iirc someone even said it was a hoax shortly after it first popped up.

The 50 character roster rumor came way before that list.

Well.. can't they also animate it the traditional way ? Or even frame by frame like GGXrd God i hate those SFV wood pants :(

The fact that we don't know who 12-18 of the characters are? Just a general outline? That's still tons of excitement. Kim's wife? Kim's Master? New Prisoner? We just know a generic name for them, but not their movesets, fighting style or any of that.

Meh, Dan's idle animation in SF4 was already more detailed than that.
