We won't know until next month but with the game being tied to Black Friday/holiday bundles it will move a lot.
If it were a bundle available everywhere, I would agree with you. But its bundle is exclusive to Best Buy and the Microsoft Store. Not to mention the fact that it's $349.99 on Black Friday and has to compete with cheaper $299.99 Xbox One and PS4 bundles.

Did you even read CD's defense of this exclusivity deal? It was the exact opposite of what you are saying....They specifically said this deal was to grow the franchise, not sell significantly less....

Read what they really said instead of making up what you think they thought....

It's not like they'd put out a statement saying "Yeah, this deal sucks, I sure wish SE hadn't done this to us."

The only thing that this thread shows is that ROTR has sold better per console unit than its predecessor.

I think you're forgetting the 360 installed base.

You could say that the 360 owners have moved on, but that was also partially true in 2013. The active 360 installed base was a lot smaller then the total installed base.

Sure, because companies always speak the absolute truth in their PR statements. Do you actually believe that they seriously intended to grow the franchise by restricting the number of players? Way to be naive.

Wait so their real intent was to shrink the franchise? Why?

Wait don't answer it's Square-Enix. As crazy as it sounds, I can't rule out that possibility that that was exactly their intent.

We have to be getting trolled right now.

This is what I'm telling myself too. But I'm scared... What if we aren't??!!

Will it, though?

Will people be jumping to buy a full priced game that's been out for months on another platform?

I'm just waiting for the eventual release date reveal for the ps4 version next year coinciding with anther huge game that will eat into sales again. Should be a lot of fun.

So fucking annoyed at the decisions made with this game.

It's an amazing title that I just had the pleasure of finishing. But through the dumb deal put in place by MS and Square the game will never see the audience it should have. Late ports never do gangbusters, especially when they're as far away from the debut as TR.

I sincerely worry that dumbass Square will take this as a sign that people are sick of the franchise or that CD made a bad game.

The only minor positive is that I'll get a chance to throw it in my top 10 two years in a row.

Not many will get hyped for a late port. Tomb raider will compete with another set of big hitters next year.
Off top of my head these games could release around the holiday, CoD, Mass Effect, Tom Clancy, Mafia III, FF, GT Sports, Horizon.

And Zelda will also take a lot of mindshare in the media.

When you add in digital sales per Internet, the sales rise to infinity as there is only one Internet. Check and mate.

I agree with everything in this post, except I didn't quite finish it yet.

I'm not sure why this is a big deal. The game will get another bump when it hits the other platforms. Also, well, nothing about US numbers.

It's a great game. I think it will do fine.

Obviously. Add the number of xbones plus 1 Internet.

X xbones + 1 internet = ?????

The units don't match! This is sorcery! You can't suggest that!

If this bump was more significant you'd see these deals happen with nearly every game. It doesn't just work like that. Past history has shown that games that release so long after the initial release do very poorly (ME, Bioshock, etc.). Unless you are going to claim ME and Bioshock weren't also great games?

For what it's worth, for those asking I'll grab this for PS4. I'd prefer a June-Aug release though. If it releases next Sept (almost certainly something Destiny) or later though that may delay the sale.

that's unfortunate but it seems like a timing issue as much as an exclusivity one, especially if UC4 hadn't been pushed back.

Yes, that was very predictable. And yet Square-Enix sold exclusivity right to Microsoft which cut the installed base in 3 when the Definitive Edition had sold considerably more on Sony boxes.

The question was "will people by Xbox consoles to play the next Tomb Raider?".
And the answer is a quasi-universal "No".
Maybe under better circumstances it would have. On same day as fallout and with an already announced ps4 version, it didn't stand a chance.

More cheap irony. Great.

No, their intent was to make money right there at that moment. I thought it was obvious, but maybe I'm giving some of you too much credit.

I'm not arguing that this decision will ultimately be good for the franchise, just to be clear.

Without the money from MS, this game might've never reached it's potential (and reviews have all been glowing AFAIK).

I'll happily pick it up on PS4 down the road

I'm just going to go ahead and assume that Microsoft's money didn't influence the final product at all.

TR DE did pretty well and a lot of people had already played it. I think it'll still do ok as long as its not released at a stupid time.

The official bundle will have a disadvantage on Black Friday for those shopping purely on price but through the holidays the game will get tacked into many deals. Wouldnt be surprised if some stores do offers like buy any Xbox get tomb raider free. Its become an increasingly common sales tactic especially during the shopping season.

I think the game will do fairly well in North America especially if they begin to advertise it.

I think it'll definitely bomb on PS4 too even with a $40 price tag instead of $60.

It'll be $60 since its technically a new release on that platform. I agree ps4 only owners that are interested in the game will pick it up but I don't see the game getting a second wind. The second wind will be the pc version providing the port is good.

TRDE was also released during the early generation drought, and without UC4 either a month away or a month prior.

Using any other franchise as base for comparison makes no sense. You measure TR's performance by comparing the current game with the previous game. The only thing that this thread shows is that ROTR has sold better per console unit than its predecessor.

Yes, it does. By your logic, the Halo series have been in decline since Halo Reach (Halo 3, Halo Reach, and Halo 4 debuted around 3.3 million in the US). Increasing the install base can only do so much, even for juggernaut franchises like Halo. In addition, by your logic, the higher the XBO install base, the higher the baseline for Tomb Raider. That never happens and whenever a game's baseline increases, it would be because its price got reduced by a significant amount or retailers offered special deals.

Even if tomb raider sells poorly on Xbox it doesn't really matter because Microsoft obviously paid a ton of money to Square Enix. SE gets the benefit of a second launch next Christmas on PS4 after the game builds a bunch of hype. Seems like a good deal to me for a timed exclusive, two launches + Microsoft money.

That being said releasing it same day as Fallout 4 was stupid.

We'll see again next year when ROTR sells poorly on the PS4 again parked next to another big game like Mass Effect.

You're right. There is a potential for plenty of soft bundles after Black Friday. However, if MS actually makes a Rise of the Tomb Raider soft bundle this holiday, they would be completely insane. Instead of bundling Tomb Raider officially, at a discount, they'd soft bundle the title without any sort of bulk discount? Stranger things have happened though.

Except it'll fucking tank on PS4 too. Even at a lower price point imo. Ain't nobody got time for TR next year when the heavy hitters hit will the overall mindset I feels.

Well, I don't believe everything they say, no...But I would consider their own words before I would simply make shit up and pass it like facts without anything to back it up like you are......

Sorry, I might have missed something, do we know when TR is coming out on PS4?

not an exact date but they did say console exclusivity will last one year which puts the earliest release of the ps4 version in holiday/fall 2016.

It'll probably get delayed into spring 2017 if there's big heavy hitters next November. You can't put a year old port up against massive releases and expect good things.

Ah, fair enough. Still interested to see how it does on PS4 though. My guess is that it's going to take second preference for a lot of people to any other major releases.
