Wait a minute, Captain Toad sold 250K copies on its first month.

I'm looking at getting a general idea of which games sold more than 200K during their first months, and it's just depressing.

Based on....?

E3? Gears 4 was announced on the biggest stage Microsoft has and was met with a collective shrug.

Crazy month, I guess it's time to add the Holiday season to the pre-season calendar. Only Halo launch months count.

Amazing tag, Chobel. Pity we don't have a timeline of your bets.

Captain Toad is a great game, actually!!! One of the best on Wii U. Deserved even more.

I am so happy Tomb Raider bombed. Thank you gaming Gods. Please destroy the reboot series forever so that I may have a chance of getting it developed by some company that actually understands what the goddamned franchise is about.

Big ass grin.

I don't know why people think Tomb Raider would have been some runaway success if it were on PS4. The game still probably wouldn't have charted or just barely. No one was dying for a Tomb Raider, especially one releasing smack dab in the midst of Fallout 4, Battlefront, and Black Ops 3. Release window killed it more than exclusivity.

Any evidence?

The last bit of data we have is 2:1 sales on the Definitive Edition.

Just for these asking about MS PR early and I couldn't link it.

http://m.ign.com/articles/2015/12/10/playstation-4-leads-november-2015-hardware-sales

"Last month was our best November ever in the U.S. for Xbox One, setting new records for console sales, game sales and Xbox Live engagement. The most critically-acclaimed holiday lineup of exclusives in Xbox history helped drive 44 percent growth in Xbox Live hours over last November, and 72 percent growth in U.S. first-party retail game sales comparing sales from August through November in 2015 to the same period last year."

The OP can be updated.

Tomb Raider is a bonafine bomba with those numbers. I thought maybe it gets 400k and some posters will fight tooth and nail to make that number seem un-bomba like but it's so damn low it's not even an if.

If Square has the balls to go for $60 next fall...lmao...

I don't give a shit if it's your favorite game of all time, honestly, because my comment wasn't even about quality.

It's an abhorrent TOMB RAIDER game that destroyed a true original for checklist game design nonsense that I could play in thirty five other games every year.

They could have called it RETURN OF THE LADY WARRIOR and gave it no relation to Tomb Raider and no one would have gave a shit. They made their bed, now as an OG TR fan I have a right to dance in the fuckin' rain over seeing it crash and burn. As it is my only shot at ever seeing a return to the glory days of what the franchise was always about. This shouldn't bother you one bit.

At the very minimum, doubling it's sales and doing much better in the EU would have been a much better result then whatever it's doing right now.

Yep the demo at E3 wasn't particularly impressive but it was probably rushed for the show and the game wasn't ready to be showcased.
I wouldn't make any judgement until next E3.
I thought that the Uncharted 4 demo at PSX 2014 was pretty disappointing as well, and yet ND was able to floor everyone with their set piece demo last E3.

Like I said in the Tomb Raider thread,I am not worried about the franchise...the game would be in the top 10 if it would of come out for PC and PS4 also...

A little surprised by Need For Speed,it was a stealth release ;) and still made it.

I don't think the design had much to do with it though, at least in comparison to the deal / release date.

We are talking about region (america) where 360 had huge lead over PS3. This is equivalent of Xbone is winning over PS4 by over 1 mil in Japan.

If that happened I'm sure people will be flipping over too.

Yeah I mean that's a pretty big deal.

Why this is always downplayed I have no idea.

Nevermind.

Probably because many couldn't see what was going on (haha).

But no, the game has hype. It was one of the most popular series introduced last gen. How the game will do in comparison to previous Gears games is a different story though. I would expect it to do better than Judgment at least.

Well yeah, but it still would have been a sales disappointment. Tech Times says it sold 330K opening week, but I don't know where they got their numbers from. Chartz (I know) said a little over 500k for the month. If all this is close to right and the Definitive Edition metric holds (which I don't believe it would have) you're looking at 1.5m for the month. Bottom of the list at best, no?

100% understand and agree with you. TR 1-4 on PS1 are best TR games for me. I hated later iterations on PS2/360/PS4, there are nothing like OG TR games.

It's your right to not like it, but to say you're happy it bombed is pretty harsh. I personally loved ROTR and like the direction the series is going.
To wish a game bombs seems a bit childish and selfish.

It will be interesting to see how it tallies up.

Say it does 250K more on PC (where's the marketing at?), and 250k on PS4 next Fall (@ $40). Plus 150k additionally for Xbox One.

Lets say it also does 200k more worldwide. We're looking at 1m-1.5m, 2m on the generous side.

Ouch.

Well, people seem genuinely happy Tomb Raider bombed, and things didn't work out well for people who spent years of their lives working on a fantastic game. Nice thread.

They are using incorrect numbers. And opening at 1.5 million would put it #4 on the list. That's way too high of a number for the series.

I really like the game, but maybe you guys should let him have his opinion on the Tomb Raider series, no?

Like it or not, CD DOES cater to checklist-gaming, and that's abundantly clear by some of the additions they made to RotTR like a pointless shop and quests that are exactly like Challenges, but instead called "quests".

The game was lovely, and I wish it had sold more and disagree with him. But I'll defend his right to disagree, because it absolutely DOES feature some of those things that he apparently does not like at all. The criticism is not unfounded, we just disagree with it.

Just the general idea that a great game bombed, for whatever reason, and people being HAPPY about it, is just sad.

It's the darkness in an otherwise great light of news (both consoles did amazing).
