Incredible win for PS4, for a month without Sony exclusives and going up against a new Halo.

I'm not sorry for Tomb Raider either. They treated the fans like crap by selling the exclusivity. That damage control open letter to TR fans actually pissed the hell out of me even more.

"This doesn’t mean that we’re walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4."

Yeah, we don't get Rise, but we have Osiris and DE! Just like when Microsoft they had a product for people who had bad Internet: the Xbox 360. Fuck you.

Why? Kamiya gets to work on one of his dream projects, Platinum gets paid, and, even if it doesn't light the charts on fire, it'll likely end up as one of their best selling titles.

Yeah, Scalebound and Tomb Raider are in two entirely different positions. The opportunity cost for Tomb Raider was selling over twice as much on PS4, the opportunity cost for Platinum is getting contracted to do another Transformers game or something.

I think we had 1 earlier. But I mean as of now globally PS4 is still outpacing PS2 and had a bigger November than at any point in Playstation history.

So in other words PS4 is chugging along really damn beautifully.

Hope this means we can definitively put the whole consoles are doomed the market is contracting nonsense to bed.

You've seen these games? I don't know what ReCore even is, Scalebound and Crackdown both looked rough, and Sea of Thieves is now this proven awesome game because Rare and reasons? I feel like every MS exclusive just gets this automatic free pass of it's going to be awesome, same for some of Sony's games as well. Not sold on NMS, Tomorrow Children, Wild etc...But the issue is, Sony has a lot more coming out, and many from more proven developers.
He was saying that Microsoft should try something other than the Forza/Halo/Gears trio, nothing about how great they'll be. I don't think anyone can objectively say their lineup isn't varied next year compared to the typical first party output we usually see from them.

And if Street Fighter 5 does good numbers? Isn't it relatively the same type of deal in the long run?

A usually multi play game on consoles only coming out on one?

I could be wrong
SFV will likely perform the same. Fighting game fans are not loyal to platforms, and SF is not synonymous with any platform. X360 was used a lot due to a latency issue with versions and online being superior. I don't believe there are millions of fans on X1 salty about no Street Fighter.

Tomb Raider is very closely associated with PS. People keep talking about how packed this holiday was, man, TR would have done like 2 million or more if it was on PS4--no doubt about it.

I'm starting to feel bad for Scalebound :(
Crazy numbers from both MS and Sony

Why? Wouldn't it depend when it releases? If it's up against CoD and co. then RIP... But, otherwise it would depend on Xbox users want for that genre? Who knows, it might do very well.

Some of my hardware numbers were too conservative. I love being wrong in this department though.

I got the order of the inevitable top three right, although many of us did.

I also figured Rise of the Tomb Raider wouldn't chart... but seeing Just Dance beat it to tenth is still pretty crazy.

So, PS4 is a beast, by the way.

Question regarding RotTR for those wiser on the topic: So if the game is produced also by Microsoft doesn't that mean Microsoft gets back some of the profit for each sale of the game on any platform?

If that's the case, they really have no reason to delay the game if the Xbox One version of RotTR's sales level off completely. Wouldn't want to get it out onto other platforms for their cut of the sales to recoup the initial investment? If that isn't the case I can see them holding onto the exclusivity as long as they can.

But if the game is failing already and they are getting a share of each sale, I don't see why they would intentionally let the potential sales on PC and PS4 dwindle unless... this deal is just really, really ill thought out.

Here it is -

Have we gotten any of those great this gen vs gen 6/7 and PS4 vs PS2 comparison charts in this thread yet?
Using the rough available numbers, looks like PS4+XB1 averted falling back to Gen 6 numbers for the #1 and #2 systems in a big way! Pretty dang sharp slope! November sales are a bigger part of Q4 sales these days, but still, that's a really, really big leap. Nice stuff. (^_^)

Yes? A ton of hardware was moved before Black Friday. A huge chunk, maybe even around 50% of the month was sold prior to BF

So if 700k were sold on Black Friday in North America alone, that would leave the rest of the world to make up just over a million to hit 32. What am I missing here?

That's some darned good market performance for both hardware and software. Discounts were strong across the board, which I know helped things along.

SE should have done PC\X1 would have really helped .

I could agree with that. But man, been some duds so far, I'm not buying into the hype of hardly anything anymore lol.

At least in terms of the PS4 yes that argument is a non starter. It can't even be debated at this point.

There is still something to say about the overall market. This generation will still be smaller than last gen overall, however a huge part of that is due to the loss of the Wii's marketshare, who are consumers that are never returning.

That said yes, Core gaming is just as strong as its ever been.

Microsoft is only publishing the Xbox versions. SE is publishing the PC and PS4 versions.

Because Square and Crystal Dynamics treated their fans as disposable. Turns out we were not. It will be even funnier to see them come crawling back next year. I have no knowledge of how good the game actually is...I wonder why that is. ;)

Exactly. Not only Tomb Raider is an iconic game attached to Playstation history for many years, the ressurrecting of the franchise also sold better on Playstation, only confirming the loyalty PS owners have towards TR. So Square Enix ignore all these fans to put the game exclusively for 1 year on a platform that has sold the least for the franchise and has half the install base of the platform attached to TR.
I feel for CD, they didn't deserve it, but this deal makes me have no sympathy for this ridiculous sales.

I'd draw a distinction between not feeling sorry for MS or Square for TR bombing, and on the other hand feeling bad for the great work Crystal Dynamics did on the game. I highly doubt the devs were happy about pissing off fans on Tomb Raider's historical console user base.

A great game backstabbed by Square.

I mean you aren't missing really anything, 32 million is possible by the end of November but I don't think by any means that's a "conservative" estimate. As I put earlier 31-32 million by the end of the month sounds about right.

apparently enough that Square haven't closed the studio so that's something

Why would they close CD? They are a technically accomplished studio that's been around for a while. Most of their games are well received and, outside of maybe TR 2013 (which had a long development), they seem to come out on time with minimal delays or other bad press hanging over them. They are pretty much rock solid and dependable.

If for whatever reason they don't want to continue with the TR series as-is then there are plenty of other IPs that SE would probably be happy to toss their way.

This is true.

I could've made a better statement which would've been, "I'm not sure AAA publishers will fund such a game anymore."

Oh that is a different discussion and much to do with how the industry has been changing in the last few years. AAA gaming has become an industry where you pick your investments and bet carefully trying to aim as wide as possible to maximize your return of investment. And a lot of people and old fans aren't happy with each game becoming more and more of the same with only superficial things changing (Ubisoft disposable open world games I am looking at you!) from one game to the other and the reaction is even worse when it happens to an established franchise.

nah, i meant it would still sell the same basically what it would have if it was multi-platform. I know the hardcore fighting community are very platform agnostic. Pick up and switch at the drop of a hat.
Oh, okay, I misunderstood. Thanks.

I think Capcom was looking for ~2mil by March 31st, IIRC. I think it is more than doable.

So do we really believe the Wii U can survive another year on the market by itself? Or the 3DS for that matter?

Nintendo really really needs new Hardware by next Holiday.

But Pachter said they won't release anything in 2016 because it will take them 18 months since the announcement to release something on the market! :p

I see. I won't hold a grudge though, I definitely will play it when it releases on PS4.

He was saying that Microsoft should try something other than the Forza/Halo/Gears trio, nothing about how great they'll be. I don't think anyone can objectively say their lineup isn't varied next year compared to the typical first party output we usually see from them.

That's the big problem with how Microsoft has constructed their studios, and one reason I was quite disappointed when they decided to go with Gears of War 4 instead of a new IP.

Effectively, Microsoft's core studios are nothing more than franchise sweatshops. They're not like Naughty Dog, Guerrilla Games, or Sony Santa Monica where Sony trusts these large studios to develop new IP if they desire and take on more risks (even if it fails in the case of SSM, or succeeds in the case of TLOU).

Microsoft treats this studios strictly as business rather than an art form, and I feel that that franchise fatigue is a real and serious issue they are facing now. Forza has never been too popular, Halo is on a steep decline, and there's no doubt in my mind Gears 4 will probably follow the same trend.

It's why I'm not particularly itching to go out and buy an Xbox One. There's no real excitement or innovation into a lot of their new IP. There's nothing like "Horizon" that they could show off and get people extremely excited about something new. It's always more of the same, by and large... there are exceptions, but generally this is a problem with their first party studios and a major reason why Bungie left, which is a huge mistake in hindsight given how immensely popular Destiny has become. Imagine if Destiny was an Xbox exclusive?

Wii U will be dead and the 3DS will be close to it next year. Nintendo can't be stupid enough to wait 2 more years.

I really don't know what Nintendo going to do in the home consoles market .
Next year for PS4 should be big and if NX don't start off good it can end up being a dead system rather fast .

I wonder.

Hardware is great. Heck, software is great to.

... But where is the extended audience for these consoles? I see the same demographic pretty much across the top ten except for one title... on the Wii. And this isn't a new thing, either, these consoles have been reliably poor for family/extended audience oriented titles, regularly outsold by the 360.
