NPD Sales Results for November 2015 [Up3: Combined Hardware For PS4 + XB1 + Wii U]

The Xbox One is significantly outpacing the 360, going by those numbers. I really don't get all the concern around it. It's doing really well; it's just not the market leader, and I doubt that's going to change. Doesn't mean it's not a healthy product though, because it definitely is.

Random thought, but I wonder if we will see console redesigns this E3 or if that will still be another year out from next.

Are they in a position to do die shrinks? Internal hardware changes to save money are usually the impetus for a redesign.

360 started off very slow. It had a late gen resurgence with Slim model and Kinect. Arguably more due to Kinect and the mainstream appeal that opened for the system. Therefore, we're not really comparing XB1 to the best years of 360, yet, and it seems unlikely for this gen to last as long as the previous one did, either.

Why are people talking like MS has to make crazy price drops etc.

Bruh they just sold almost 1.3 million consoles in a month. That's amazing. The Xbone is doing just fine.

Yep it's quite annoying really. How much will the Xbox have to sell before it's not doomed to some people?

Software results are disappointing though given what released this year.

I know that Sony at least recently had the RAM size for their hardware able to be shrunk down I believe. Not sure on the APU side if they are currently in that position or not

Well I believe it stems from the fact that it is failing pretty miserably in every country other than the UK/USA.

Obviously not completely doomed but not doing that great.

This. MS is doing fantastic with the XB1, yet some people here are thinking it is doing the same status as the wiiu. If anything, we should be applauding MS for standing toe to toe with sony, does anyone really want a lop sided generation of gaming again?

You know, I always wondered if this was possible.... release not just a redesign, but a more powerful system who's games would not only look better on, but also work on the lesser system. Almost PCesque. I mean, someone has to be working on that, right?

Like the ps2 era? We can only hope for something so wonderful.

Standing toe-to-toe with Sony, in just one region, is hardly something that should be applauded. Around the world, they're basically non-existent. That's precisely why people react the way that they do. Can't just depend on the US, and sometimes, the UK, and call it a gen, obviously.

Besides, it's already a lop-sided generation. May as well get used to that. Plus, the last time we had that happen, the PS2 was in control. So yes, I DO remember how good of a time that was!

Someone from Sony mentioned passingly that very thing for the PS4.

Its possible that would get pretty confusing for the consumer though, and would be just yet another version of a game that devs would have to make. Not sure if it would really work / go over well tbh

Not surprising, but glad to see PS4 remains the king.

Looking forward to seeing Tomb Raider on PS4 and PC outselling the Xbox One version by a large margin, too.

It's coming to PS4 at a bad time amidst all the big hitters, so I doubt it's going to sell particularly well there. I could see the PC version doing okay, though, since it's coming much earlier, and the first game did 3.5 million or so on Steam. It's a day one purchase on PC for me, since I really enjoyed the game on Xbox One despite the technical issues. I hope those are ironed out for PC and PS4. The game is great, and deserves a lot more sales on PC and PS4.

Question. What can MS reasonably do to get Xbox leading again and eventually overpowering PS4?
Nothing.

They had that chance last year, then squandered it early 2015. They had it this fall w/ Halo 5, and we've seen how that's played out (no pun intended).

They won't get that many (if any) third party timed exclusives anymore, they can't undercut PS4 by too much, their exclusives aren't pushing hardware sales and Oculus Rift support won't give it nearly the boost PSVR seems primed to give PS4 around this time next year. And then there's the NX possibly coming in to eat a large chunk of PS4's leftovers, similar to what N64 did to Saturn in NA as it was just kind of rebounding against PS1.

MS just has to keep supporting the platform w/ quality experiences and gain back goodwill for next gen, that's the best they can manage at this point.

It depends on a single factor.
They need an APU die shrink. If they can mass manufacture a 18-20nm APU we're going to see slim models next year.
I think it's happening in 2016, no way that after 3 years they can't use a more advanced manufacturing process.

With the PC version not coming out for a year, I've been considering picking up the 360 version for cheap just to play it sooner. It's not a waste for me! :lol

Pretty sure PC version is Q1 2016? Regardless, judging by the console screenshot thread, that game is going to look spectacular on PC. You should definitely wait.

Our goal has always been to deliver something truly special with Rise of the Tomb Raider. Today’s announcement with Microsoft is one step to help us put Tomb Raider on top of action adventure gaming. Our friends at Microsoft have always seen huge potential in Tomb Raider and have believed in our vision since our first unveil with them on their stage at E3 2011. We know they will get behind this game more than any support we have had from them in the past - we believe this will be a step to really forging the Tomb Raider brand as one of the biggest in gaming, with the help, belief and backing of a major partner like Microsoft.

So how's that working out guys?

Is the Xbone doing better than the 360 WW after 2 years on the market?

i believe so, especially in the united states. however, the 360, like the ds, was a platform that was not initially as successful as it wound up being. it shipped 40 million units in its first five years on the market, and more than doubled that in its final five years on the market.

Sometime in 2016. Both Sony and MS are waiting on 16nm fabs to have enough capacity for them as well as waiting for the same price or less than their current 28nm fabs given how new non-Intel mass production of 14/16nm is. Apple can pay extra money for cutting edge production as an example, Sony/MS have much tighter cost requirements.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the Xbox One performs in markets other than UK and USA next year, since it seems to be a pretty big year for the console, with a lot of cool exclusives coming out. PlayStation has always been the first choice in mainland Europe, and I don't see it changing drastically, but Microsoft could certainly do a thing or two to improve on that.

Would be pretty hilarious if even a year later Tomb Raider performs better at launch on the PS4 than it did on Xbone

Probably will. Uncharted 4 will be out by then, and those players will be looking for a similar game to pick up down the road. Makes sense for it to sell better with an audience in place for it.

Hardware wise, they seem fine to me. I think their software situation is weird. They do not publish much prior to October these days, and the first party franchises they are leaning on for sales all debuted from 2001 to 2006. The only franchise I expect Sony to lean on from the same time period is God of War. Not expecting Killzone 5 to be announced right after Horizon ships.

Yeah if it is a literal calendar year of exclusivity, it is just going to get destroyed again next November.

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
To me, a slim version signals the mid-way point of a console gen, or at least near it.

I don't expect to see any until 2017.

I expect us to see or start hearing about the new consoles in 2019...so 2016 summer would be the perfect spot for a slim redesign of PS4 IMO.

The only question is if 16finfet will be in a state where Sony can use it so quickly

I don't think its crazy Xbone gets some traction in mainline Europe as a nice 2nd console for some exclusive titles as time goes buy. PS4 is the clear dominant leader there and I don't think that will ever change but I could see a nice little uptick for the Bone as price comes down and more exclusives over time hit.

I suppose, though my hunch is based on the belief that Sony will ride out the PS4 until 2020. After which they would introduce the PS5.

No way PS5 comes out that late, 2019 at the latest. They will try a PS2 with the machine and get the price really low and keep support up for a couple of years (3rd parties and kids), PS3 could never get low enough to do that plus the gen ran on a year or two longer than it should.

Sales so poor her jacket can't even afford to defrost in direct sunlight.

'Tis a shame.

Something to think about: last year when PS4 sold 800K in the U.S for November it sold 4.1 million world wide through the holiday season,

We know that PS4 is already over 30 million sold & chances are it's going to sell well over 4 million this holiday season, I'm thinking somewhere around 6 or 7 million pushing PS4 to about 37 million sold at the end of the year.
