Call of Duty, FIFA (in Europe), Destiny, Fallout... are killer games.

Bloodborne is one of the best games I've ever played.
aside from BB you can get the other games on the competing platform and BB is similar to 1 more game on other platforms, my point was, we yet dont have uncharted 4 or a new god of war or a great killzone, things that you would think will pull people in, i dont know, it just seems crazy to me how incredibly good the ps4 is selling, it really is breaking records

After seeing so many awkward renamed Tomb Raider titles (Tomb Bomba and the like), I request that henceforth the game be known as Bomb Raider. Simple and delicious. Hopefully SE learned their lesson.

I bought a PS4 and BB this week and have put a few hours into it now, damn fine game so far.

The PS systems have always sold mostly on the back of 3rd party games, this is nothing new.

Sony's 1st party offerings are just the cherry on top.

guys, in all honesty, how in the world is the ps4 selling so much keeping in mind the console does not have a killer game yet? i have a ps4 but in all honesty i have always been a PS supporter but i never thought this console would be doing this numbers to be honest

fuck it, I'll give a straight answer.

PS came out punching from the off in February, with the whole 8GB ram catching people by surprise. MS were then on the backfoot and had a terrible launch event which further cemented Sony as having the positive buzz heading into launch. That was further rammed home by MS doubling down on their DRM shit and Sony taking the piss with their E3 used games slides and 'how to share games with friends' youtube clip.

And it was cheaper. And more powerful. And people were ready for new hardware - the PS3/360 were getting long in the tooth.

Add in that Playstation is a stronger brand in the rest of the world outside of the US, and was launching at the same time as Xbox (not 12-18 months later and way more expensive like PS3

So at launch Sony was already the one to get - the gamers friend if you will.

Also, it has plenty of games. More games than Xbox one in every year since it launched. It just hasn't had as many 'big' (arbitrary dollar value assigned to it) titles released in 'peak season' (arbitrary slice of time around Oct/Nov)

The whole purpose was the game to be uncharted. It was a sucess.

What? The whole purpose was for it to go up against Uncharted for Xbox. That failed miserably, as UC4 was delayed. And then SE felt the heat from the exclusive deal backlash, and revealed that PS4 and PC versions were coming later, hurting Xbox and possibly themselves at least in the short term as some customers will just choose to wait for those releases. This whole thing seemed bungled.

This is after doing such a great job reviving the series, but complaining of sales of the first game after selling millions, and now excluding PC and the fastest growing current gen console resulting with possibly worse sales. How's this a success when now we're left wondering if there'll even be another game after this?

Resogun was a launch day killer game to me.

It's all in perspective, and others disagree with you.

Yikes. No wonder Xbox minimums scared them away. That PS4 number is especially terrifying, I feel like a Vita sku might've done better even.

I wonder if the amiibo launch will lift sales?

PS4's is much higher than last gen.
What are the current US attach rates? Last time we got a worldwide figure was almost a year ago, and at that point PS4 digital+retail lagged Wii retail by just over half a game.

I think Rise of the Tomb Raider's problem is the release date as much as as the platform choice. It would have been buried by COD, Battlefront, Fallout 4, Halo 5, Assassin's Creed etc even if it was multi-platform on day one. I think if you move it to Q1 2016 it would have sold better.

I agree with this. Although it could possibly have done better if it had been up against Uncharted 4. With Uncharted being pushed until March next year, Rise of the Tomb Raider found itself in an odd position between games likes of CoD, Star Wars and Fallout 4.

Seems weird for a developer and not a publisher do to that, but if that's the case then that's the case.

Not when they are as close as CD and MS are, they've firmly been an Xbox development house, farming out all their recent games to nixxes to port to PC and sony platforms

The days of a console needing one KILLER APP game to be a big success are over.

Exclusives may get early adopters to pick a side early in the game but just having the biggest library and variety of titles is what gets the masses in the door. It's the exact same reason PS2 was hot fire despite Xbox getting solid exclusives and many multiplats that looked and ran considerably better.

People baffled by PS4's success despite not having an Ocarina of Time or GTA3-level game or whatever, its just not that relevant today.

It's amazing how ps4 absorbed all the core nextgen audience from last gen and how the wiiu still sells so poorly.

Sure the wiiu is a dead system with no third party support but it has a solid library. By contrast, ps4 was doing well from the get go, before it had a good library.

Shows you how much console features and perception matter. Sony made a decently powerful, not too expensive, good feature console that developers and gamers wanted. Nintendo made an expensive, feature lacking system that no one asked for.

Guess which strategy worked better.

Even if Wii u was as powerful as the PS4 it would still do as badly as it is doing now

Nintendo made an agonizingly slow, feature-lacking system. They also had the worst naming and marketing scheme that I've ever seen. I still know casuals who think the WiiU is the "gamepad add-on" for the Wii.

That said, shit is built Nintendo-tough. My gamepad fell off a ledge down 2 stories onto hard floor (laminate) and suffered no damage.

Really? Because that's why I went to 5 interviews before I took this current position and managed to arrange them all in a week. Recruiters are a spawn enemy in the IT world, they're fucking ruthless. They're like used car salesmen with jobs.

Guys, I'd never endorse laying people off, but it's never the end of the world! Good devs are few are far between, and I know, because I'm currently interviewing for some people. If the devs at CD don't get treated this way, they should move anyway because they should feel valued.

The dev's have ZERO visibility to that, unless they're higher ups are more of the open sort. They get paid, they care about their career progression. If there's no threat to their jobs, then they should feed proud.

What the fuck are you talking about dude XD
If these people love what they're doing right now and the game underperforms than they have every right to be concerned for the implications of a big budget project like this to severely underperform. You think there will be no repercussions based on missed targets ?
Your company must either be a SAAS company, or just a small endeavour. Or you have no idea what is going on in your own company and project your happy-go-lucky naiveté on the rest of us. Gamedevelopment is a ruthless, high risk / high reward industry where a failed project can shut down an entire studio.

Agreed. In today's market you are dead in the water without third party support, unless you have a Wii/DS mass market device that doesn't have to rely on the core/major AAA crowd.

The days of a console needing one KILLER APP game to be a big success are over.

But it can surely help. Until then playing everything nicely plus having some sweet exclusives is all that customers want.

Summer Lesson will be a killer app.

If this is credible then it means that PS4 is outselling XB1 roughly 4:1 in China, despite releasing later.
China now officially part of Europe.

Add up two or three of PS4 games that don't count and you have a Tomb Raider in sales.

Add up a few more and they've probably "countered" nearly the full lineup of more major Fall releases and few people actually noticed that.

Exactly. The majority of software sold is 3rd party and the PS4 is almost always the best console to play them on. The positive word-of-mouth with the PS4 cemented it early on as the console to buy. The negative word-of-mouth MS generated helped strengthen that fact. Exclusives just don't make much of a difference anymore. MS just released their biggest exclusive with Halo and it changed nothing.

While I trust Zhuge, one of the Chinese journalist on GAF said that it is not true.

This data is not accurate.
I don't intend to confirm or deny it, but this is not the data to trust.

must-have multiplat killer apps are best on PS4, and that's besides games like Bloodborne, Uncharted, TLOU HD, Until Dawn, and all the exclusive indies. How is it so hard to realise that your specific taste has no bearing on reality ?

I had a ps3 so the last of us is not a killer app to me, but a number of friends who experienced that game on ps4 for the first time were foaming at the mouth at how good it is.

Zhuge, then made it clear, the 410k is sold in(to retailers), the combined 500k china sales are sold through(to consumers).

So you can't make that assumption from the data.

Btw, Zhuge is pretty much reliable at this point. He doesn't talk out of his ass.

Zhuge has already rectified this and apologised for this on another forum. It was a miscalculation. He would have done it here too given the opportunity. Check his Tweets because the likelihood is he's done it there as well. I don't follow Tweets so I'm not sure.

Thank you for telling me who ZhugeEx is! I will remember to avoid him.

I don't know why Zhuge was banned. I don't know why some people here want to throw him under the bus. But I know this: his analysis and character are solid. He's made guest appearances on our podcast and he's been nothing but knowledgeable and friendly. Guy knows what he's talking about.

So October is probably the last time we will ever see X1 win the month right?

PS4's is much higher than last gen.

December we'll see. It depends on how well that extra week of promotions helps the Xbox. But I really think the SW bundle is going to do amazing for ps4 this month.

Visited Bejing two months ago and there's ps4 stores everywhere. In the hutongs, all the smalltime game store are very playstation focused.

People are taking everything I've said out of context, including you. I said the developers will be proud of what they've produced, no matter what the sales are. If the sales risk their job, then they have the right to be pissed off because of the decisions the higher-ups made.

So much for going back to work...

* 9:1 digital ratio
* satisfaction (not sales) as a measure of success
* crazy view of how the industry works
* lax work ethics

Do you work for Peter Molyneux?

Wait, is Leeh the same person that said 9/10 of his friends bought a game digitally?

Ask Japan (or, Germany, for that matter) if that's impressive or not.

Concerning MS' US performance, I am actually surprised how well XBOX One performed compared to PS4, given both were available for the same prize at most places. 1,3 million consoles considered individually is a great result, especialy given the fact that neither Halo 5 nor ROTTR matched expectations (saleswise). Absolutely no reasons to post shame.gifs here.

how are the attach rates, i can't imagine they are doing super great on these consoles but maybe I'm wrong

Do you mean games per system?

US gamers have one of the highest attach rates in the world don't they?

I have over 79 games for my X1...8-O (hadn't counted until now)

Obviously, I'm not the norm, lol.

Jesus, how's Nutjitsu?

Don't have that one..haha.

I remember it coming out though. That # does include Indie games , Arcade, and GwG.

(Edit** Went back through (even I couldn't believe it)...miscounted somehow..derp...79 still surprises me.)

Third party support is actually what sells consoles, not exclusives. Plus there is rabid loyalty to the PS brand and they actually have the best console this gen. That adds up to a sales juggernaut.
