Sony announces partnership w/ KojiPro, New IP, 1st game "console exclusive to PS4"/PC

Pancake Mix

Copied someone else's pancake recipe
Well if they publish it or help fund it and it's exclusive to their platform and a supplementary platform, they make more money.

Xbox is not relevant in Japan or continental Europe, for better or worse. We also don't know enough about NX to speculate there. This is literally a "Not Xbox" deal.

I would have thought Sony would try to go all the way for actual exclusivity or nothing if they're to be funding this. PC competes with PlayStation for actual $$$ as well when it has most of the same games. That's where (actual) exclusives come in for the big three is how I feel, but it must be really expensive and difficult to negotiate that I guess with third parties.

Amazing turn of events, the best case scenario happened. He now has funding for a new game and much easier way to build a great independent team. Sony is really smashing it this gen. 2015 was the "year of announcements" and "year of partner games" in which PS4 managed to easily dominate the market, but it looks like rest of the gen will truly be fucking awesome for PlayStation fans.

Because as soon as he hears the words "Console Exclusive" he has to tell everyone who owns a console that they have low standards and are how they're fucking up his glorious PC experience...
Considering how wrong he often is, he sure likes to throw around "objective" to validate his ill-informed opinions. A new Kojima IP being funded by Sony for a console-exclusive will likely result in a technically accomplished experience on all platforms, given the track record. MGSV is one of the better optimised titles for PC in quite some time. Though I doubt they'll have the Fox Engine at their disposal, I would expect a strong showing from KojiPro and Sony here. I'll wait for the actual game before I start calling my guesses "objective fact", though.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
For me the most poignant if obvious news in all this is that Kojima will (I assume) be directing an entirely new game that isn't fucking Metal Gear. The guy hasn't been titled director on a non-Metal Gear project in like...over a decade.

Unbelievable year and years to come.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
The way I see it there are three kinds of exclusivity from a consumer's point of view.

(1) First-party exclusives. These are fine, since the game would not exist without the platform owner funding the game.
(2) Third-party exclusives where the game would not exist without the extra funding. These are fine too.
(3) Third-party exclusives where the game could have been funded without the deal. These may be fine for the publisher/developer, but they are definitely shitty for consumers.

It's up to you to decide whether Kojima falls into category (2) or (3). Given that he likes to make expensive games, it's probably (2).

I'm surprised Hideo Kojima is going to continue making video games. I always thought he was sick of them and would branch out and direct a feature film or something after he left Konami. Nevertheless, this is amazing news and put a smile on my face. I just wonder what kind of game he's going to make. The possibilities are endless.

Considering how everything that made P.T. work had zero to do with Silent Hill hooks, it would be hilarious if it turned into a "Project Origin" siutation where they went ahead and made the same game without any of the branding. And that GIF is going to Banderas-esque mileage. Fun times ahead.

As a console-first player, it didn't stop SCE to publish Helldivers, an IP they own, on PC through Steam (with the Sony Mobile alias). I guess it will depend on the deal Kojima signed for. So it is possible that this new IP will be owned by SCE. Will have to wait and see... :p

I think HellDivers was a special case because the developers are heavily invested in the PC platform so they allowed it so they can get extra sales and possibly a show of good faith.

Hopefully between that and this, people can finally let the 'Tomb Raider timed exclusivity is the worst thing to happen to gaming' hyperbole die.

Sony is publishing, it's their game. Microsoft wrote a check and said don't put it on a sony console for a while.
There is a difference there. One is making games, the other is annoying a fanbase.

I am glad to see Kojima get right back to developing for the home console. I thought he might go down the dark rabbit hole of mobile like many other greats in the Japanese video game industry have done. Though tbf that just seems like the path for anyone who worked at Sqenix.

This will either be the best thing ever or the biggest let-down since Devil's Third.

We'll see what happen, but I'm excited to see what he'll come up with now he's free of MGS. I just hope it's as far away from that style of gameplay/storytelling as possible.

Exactly what I have been trying to say. Ignore console/pc allegiances and realise that his creativity was limited to one franchise for the majority of his career, his release should be celebrated.

I think one of the biggest win here is that Kojima can finally flex his artistic muscles again and make something new. Hell, he might be able to continually make new things.

Lets see...

1. Fuck Yeah! Huge deal for Sony!

2. Kojima looks great with a beard! Should have been Kojima's default costume!

3. Love it that he gets to keep the name Kojima Productions.

4. Logo looks awesome!

5. Fuckonami

6. FUCK YEAH!!!

Well based on GAF's reaction to MGSV I guess he couldn't sink any lower.

Also I love MGSV.

Yep. Going to be very interesting to follow his work from here on out. He's going to have so much more creative freedom.

It's great that Kojima got back on his feet so fast and is getting back to making games right away, but I gotta be honest, the level of gloating here in the thread is turning a good thing into a petty thing.
