Sony announces partnership w/ KojiPro, New IP, 1st game "console exclusive to PS4"/PC

I always thought that meant exclusive to that one console.

Man, this 3rd party exclusive stuff is so confusing lol

No and the wording is indeed (deliberately) confusing. The term 'console exclusive' always stands for 'it will come to pc's at one point'.
And that's fine. A Kojima game should be played by many people and Sony will market the shit out of this. So everyone wins.

So this was really supposed to be the end of Sony's PSX conference and not Paragon. What did Konami really get out of screwing over Sony, Kojima, and Geoff for those two days?
They probably thought allowing him to announce it on one of those stages would be a bigger platform, even though this short YouTube video will probably be seen a lot more than those events.

I'm genuinely surprised people are as psyched about this given what a mess MGSV seemed to end up being. (I hope he can cool it with the misogynist BS, also.) (This isn't meant to be a drive-by post, though. I'm genuinely curious if people are not at all wary of his next game given how many listed MGSV as their disappointment of the year in the other thread.)

Majority of people think MGS5 is amazing. Also, one can be disappointed by a game but still thinks its great.

My GOTY.

While Sony have awesome internal tech this is to likely be a cross PS4-PC release so Unreal Engine 4 makes total sense. And in terms of productivity it's probably the best available engine on the market.

I'd be very surprised if Donna's game was the one Kojima is making. They just started the studio and, even if there was something being planned before (likely), it's just too early in development for voice actors. I'm not sure how Kojima works, but usually VAs only start working later. If I were to guess, maybe she's doing NightCry?

The story was disappointing, but the game itself is still great. It's not just about Kojima, but his team, as well. Seems like most of the main players like Shinkawa have joined him.

No, the term "console exclusive" means that it "can" come to other non-console platforms, doesn't guarantee that it will. Sometimes it could be about keeping options open.

So...it's better to keep expectations in check.

Regardless of what you think of MGSV, the fact that Kojima made one divisive game that is alledgedly incomplete does not erase his past hits.

For all the people bitching about the partnership with Sony:

It's business.

This is a new studio; they have to partner with SOMEone period in order to make the game he wants to.

He just had 7ish years work stopped short and rushed to release because Konami wanted it that way.

As mentioned before, Sony has a pretty damn good track record of letting devs have freedom.

I just need to look at Bungie/Activision/Destiny to see why I'm happier he's with Sony than with a huge third party publisher that could be Destiny or MGSV all over again. He likely thought that as well.

As far as Sony, why would you not find him? It's a no-brainer

Don't forget that throughout this year we've had:

Konami taking Kojima's of the game box
Konami retroactively taking his name off games that have been out for years on their website.
Nuking the P.T demo from everyone's download list (probably because Kojima's name was on it)
Effectively being under house arrest at work, making it difficult to communicate with his dev team.
Not really being able to really talk to the public.
Lawyers physically stopping him from going game awards
And probably some other stuff I'm forgetting, but remember Kojima's been at the company for decades.

And this guy's first thought when Kojima is finally free of this shitty asswipe of a company is... "Why didn't Microsoft buy him?"

Haha yes this is a good point.

Console exclusive doesn't point out that it will come to PC.
Yes, it does.

Exclusive: it will only come to said system in the foreseeable future.
Console exclusive: it will be exclusive to said console and come to PC (counts only in consoles of said generation, may be ported to future competitor's console).
Timed exclusive: it will be exclusive for a certain amount of time, then released everywhere it makes sense to be in.

So PC/PS4. Interesting. This follows on the heels of Helldivers and the Steam leak of Everybody's Gone to the Rapture for Sony funded games making their way to PC.

I wonder who will own the IP though. Sony has been pretty adamant about owning every IP they publish, but I can't imagine Kojima relinquishing IP ownership after what happened at Konami. Is it possible Sony is making an exception? Or am I wrong to assume Kojima would want control?

Exciting nonetheless, even if it's probably a couple years until this partnership comes to fruition. Glad to see Kojima back at it so quickly after the Konami debacle.

Will Sony have more titles co-published on console and PC than MS? Where is that unprecedented PC support Phil?

I know it's popular to shit on big third party publishers and it's often warranted, but ever think the problems with Destiny and MGSV were more on Bungie and Kojima Productions? Sure some things may have gotten changed/cut because the publishers were tired of the teams burning through their money, but I wouldn't say every issue is their fault.
