Japan: Nintendo Account launching today, official blog launched too

You don't have to pay again under the current system.

That depends what they mean.

For instance, If you buy two Wii us. Then you can only play digital games on the second one if you purchase it a second time.

That being a pain in my arse because I have two Wii us (one at my house, one at my parents when I visit ~monthly) and play both. Practically it just means I haven't bought digital content for the U in a long time.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Pleased about the official blog. For years, I've wanted a Nintendo equivalent of the Playstation Blog / Major Nelson and have requested one at every opportunity. Hopefully, this will put a stop to the extended radio silences we've suffered through in the past.

To be fair, we haven't had extended radio silences if you keep your eyes on the official sites. There's weekly updates on the Nintendo Japan one and we get news through the twitters even during the long period between E3 and the last Direct.

Yeah,I expect Nintendo to not let you buy games and let you connect to more than 1 system.
They is just too stubborn.

Even if they won't let us have them active on multiple systems at a time, being able to switch the machine the license (logged in using the account it was purchased on) is active on is a must rather than this infuriating hardware tied stuff.

Yup. I dont mind one of each type of hardware per account, but you should be able to switch online

I think it's more about having a more casual place to address topics or news (e.g. if London Life were cut from Layton 4 in 2015, Nintendo could run a developer/localisation team post explaining why)/

It's too segmented right now and everyone in the know is used to getting their Nintendo news from specialist websites. That it's so hard for a non-Nintendo fan (but 3DS/Wii U owner) to find out what the weekly eShop releases are in Europe speaks volumes.

The only two places I can seem to find out are the news sites (gonintendo etc) or Nintendo Life, who report off the press release, so fingers crossed Nintendo Topics takes on a variety of topics customers will want to look for.

Sooo existing Wii/Wii U and 3DS purchases are still tied to the hardware used when purchasing the game, right? And there's still no way for the enduser to transfer this licence to a replacement system without calling Nintendo, right? Because that's what matters about a Nintendo account system and it looks like very little has actually changed.

Yeah, while the licenses are actually tied to an NNID, we need a way of managing hardware from the web.

Even if it means retaining the 1 device limit for licenses this generation, it'd be better than nothing if we can activate and deactivate devices without needing to do a system transfer or, as you say, calling Nintendo.

They're putting these systems to pasture soon, so I'm sure their account system focus is less "fix what's wrong with these" and more "let's make sure we get the next one right"

Anyone getting this error?

リクエストされた内容に誤りがあります。

I tried registering with my NNID and another method, it kept on giving me that error.

Did you use Chrome's auto-translate feature? I got that error when I had it on. Turned it off and it went through.

Nintendo of Europe's website got a major redesign back in October, and it was pretty clear this was for something like that.

Europe and North America will most likely follow before the end of the year. Maybe not today, as Nintendo probably learned their lessons and don't want to kill their servers by having everyone trying to register at once.

However, they had an insane amount of server maintenance in past few months. I bet they reinforced them to the maximum. :)

I'm a bit disappointed that the actual shopping experience is going through the parent sites of NCL/NoA/NoE.

If NoA and NoE sites were like NCL's it'd be fine, but Nintendo's wish to tailor a web-based software shop to regional websites makes me wonder whether digital content at the very least will be strictly segmented going forward.

I hope I'm wrong, of course, and there are merits to having a buy button that can be freely placed on a web page, rather than have all purchases go through a web-based eShop with its own rules on what content can be displayed.

Maybe Nintendo should let publishers implement the eShop buy button in more places, like the websites for their games (e.g. Visit Etrian Odyssey V webpage, buy the game directly from there).

You can't link your NA NNID to it anyway so just sit tight.

Phew, good stuff. That's what I figured but was just waking up and saw this, so didn't wanna miss out on a good username if people with NA accounts were already signing up.

Come on NoA, let's go!

Do we have any inkling they are going to fix it for the next one? Seems to me they don't think it is a problem.

Actually, there isn't a unique username registration for this like for your NNID. It's more of a master account where you can link your NNID to, where login is your email and you can set whatever nickname you want.

There is no rush to sign up except for the 10% back on Japanese eShop credit purchases (I assume other regions will roll out a similar promo when they open it up).

Ah, interesting. This seems confusing; are we assuming, then, that the next Nintendo consoles will still use NNID but it's linked to your Nintendo Account? Or will Nintendo Account replace NNID for their next consoles?

Hmmm...Guess we'll find out in due time. This just seems like Nintendo is making things more convoluted.

I'd assume it's the former. The Nintendo Account being an umbrella account for other services Nintendo might want to introduce, but not necessarily, associate with games (e.g. QOL might have its own log-in, but having one automatically gets you a Nintendo Account).

Microsoft Account: Outlook, Office 365, Skype, Xbox Live and more
Sony Entertainment Network: PSN, Qriocity, etc.
Nintendo Account: My Nintendo, NNID, etc.

They seem to be positioning Nintendo Accounts as some sort of thing that ties everything together. Initially, I had assumed that this would replace NNID entirely, but now it's looking like NNID is still going to be a thing, and the purpose of Nintendo Accounts is to tie NNID together with other services, and to provide a single sign-on.

That seems about right, and honestly, I'm totally fine with this approach.

So is "nintendo account" just a personal-level account that ties all your nintendo stuff together? Will NX use NNID as your friend-identifier or something new altogether?

I see that NNID still shows up as one of the linked items (along with google plus, twitter, facebook). I guess that means NNID isn't going anywhere for now? Or it's maybe just a way to tie your 3DS/WiiU to your account?

Hopefully NNID rolls over to NX.

Or even better, maybe you log on to NX w/ your nintendo account and it automatically pulls in your facebook/twitter/g+/NNID friends and adds them to your friends list? Or at least sends out friend requests to them? And you just see them as their mii handle? Did they say something like this would happen?

It's not clear what NX will use beyond "Nintendo Account" and "My Nintendo."

As we place importance on the security of our consumers, a Friend relationship can be established only between two people who know each other and have consented to the relationship. This Friend relationship can be used for software for dedicated game systems and for our smart device applications.

It's not clear if this uses the NNID friend functionality or a new friend list associated with the Nintendo Account. Based on what we've seen so far, the former appears more likely, but that's just my speculation.

NNID doesn't really have a built in friends list though. I use the same NNID on my Wii U and 3DS but each system has its own friend list. Would be nice if they could use Nintendo accounts to simplify things.

For now at least, with the Wii U and 3DS still in existence. I'm guessing the new nintendo account will be all that's used from here on though (starting with smart phone stuff, which is the only thing they've said so far on the site).

It appears that buying and downloading games (as well as demos) to your Wii U and 3DS from their site works as of now too.
No, it was never going to be a replacement if you read the slides.

I'd guess that once you get the system (and any mobile game) the first thing you do is sign in to your nintendo account which then grabs any friends you have over NNID/Twitter/Facebook/Google+ that ALSO registered a nintendo account and puts them in a new friend list on your device. I'd also guess that to add a stranger, you probably just use NNID, but maybe NX has something new altogether. Interesting to see what they do, but I don't think they're going to get rid of the 'Nintendo network' for NX.

So still no idea if this will be a "proper" account system for purchase history carrying over between devices?

Same. It's such a lonely feeling when you go out and do not receive a single StreetPass on your Nintendo 3DS. :(

Start hitting up some Nintendo Zone hotspots. I get tons of Streetpass tags every week that way. Over 90% of my tags are from Nintendo Zone spots.

Unfortunately, Future Shop locations have either converted to Best Buy stores, or most of them have closed shop. The Nintendo Zones are also not available at McDonald locations, so that's out.

But can I open a Japanese Nintendo Account and download EX Troopers on my NA 3DS?

Anyhow, the cash back thing would certainly be nicer than having a bunch of reward points with no worthwhile items to spend theme on. Hopefully we get that in NA, and hopefully that doesn't mean the end to all the neat stuff that Club Nintendo Japan used to get.

Ah, so you're in Canada? Didn't realize NZ support was poor up there? I'm in the U.S. and hit up NZ spots at our local Best Buy, Barnes and Noble and McDs every week during my errands.

Yeah, even before the introduction of the Nintendo Zones, I could easily pick-up 10-30 on a good day, with 7 on a bad one.

Now I'm lucky enough to just get one. And this is someone who lives in Vancouver, where transportation is a central theme for this city.

Best Buys are supposed to have it, but a lot of times it doesn't seem to work. I didn't realize it was discontinued in McDonalds.

You might want to talk to your local Best Buy manager and ask them to call Nintendo of Canada and send someone. They may well have the NZ router in their store but it might not be working and may need to be fixed, that happened at our local BB for several months last year until NOA had someone fix it. Same for McDs.

I didn't tried registering & stuff in japanese, but I looked (a bit) at the new blog website, and noticed they call their account login "Alps".
You can find this in their CDN server name, login window markup, javascripts plugin, etc...

Problem is, I can't figure out why that name (or accronym). Ideas?

So I got my first prepaid 100yen point card from the promo in the email. Seems straightforward enough, although the time it took from adding the 1000yen in credit to receiving the bonus was about two days.
