I hope CD gets another shot at Tomb Raider.

People who played the game really loved it and from what I saw of it online, the game looks to be a very strong improvement over the original 2013 reboot. Less focus on violently attacking Lara, more platforming being used and a story that is stronger than the original; big issues the original reboot lacked are fixed and thus, the game as a whole went from good to great.

I feel that CD will make another Tomb Raider game in the reboot series to wrap up a trilogy (like they did with the Legend Trilogy during the PS2 era), as the game got critical praise, its on two platforms (one being smart; the 360 version being great and many owning one) and when it lands on PC and PS4 the game will get more sales.

Overall, the game will do well for Square and we will be getting another Tomb Raider in the future. Might be a bit longer than two years but still, we will get one :D.

Have most of the people complaining here actually played ROTR? The game addresses most peoples complaints.. compared to the first one anyway, it's much better in the tombs/puzzles regard... In fact I'd even say it's better in every single way than the first TR, not just the tombs.

If it wasn't for The Witcher 3 then Rise of the TR would be my GOTY. Hopefully more Xbox One owners pick the game up now that they're finishing up Fallout 4 etc, it'd be a travesty if the game sells poorly in the long run it really doesn't deserve it.

I want the sequel to embrace being a chaotic shooter. Fuck it, have Lara customize guns out of spare parts and Max Payne style bullet time and a mission where she robs a museum and then Kane and Lynch show up and they have a gunfight.

I really hope so too, I developed a certain fondness for TR2013 and ROTR is on my list of honorable mentions for GOTY. It's a real shame the MS deal backfired as badly as it did.

Didn't Tomb Raider sell over 8.5 million units? That's hardly underperforming.

Yes, but it was also an expensive game to make and didn't break even until relatively far into that 8.5.

TR underperformed and ROTR tanked. It's definitely up in there air.

It only underperfomed by SE's over inflated expectations and then they themselves killed the sales of the 2nd game, so if it's up in the air that would be a third stupid reaction by SE.

Love Uncharted but the first game, in my opinion, compares more favorably to the sequels than it should simply because of the lack of constant plane rides. I prefer the intimacy (wrong word maybe, but I've just woken from a hard night of whiskey drinking) of a single location to the excitement of globe trotting.

My man. My fucking man.

Eventually with lower price and rerelease but on its initial release SE wasn't happy. ROTR sold far worse.

That's what happens when you release the game on MS only consoles and release the game very close to Fallout 4 and other big tittles.

The game will not have great first months sales but as the 360 version sells, the PC version releases and sales getting a spike during its launch on PS4 next year, the game will make its money/funding back.

Well gamers vote with their wallets so I don't know if there is a market for this kind of game anymore amongst the Fallouts, Call Of Duties, and myriad of other shooters that come out during the holidays. It came out at the wrong time, but there should have been no reason why it did poorly. It was a very well made game, which gamers didn't want. Part of it is was the promotion and part of it was the time.

Take away all the business decisions around it and I'm thinking it wouldn't have sold well anyway. The mass market really doesn't follow business practices like people do on this forum. How well did the first game do?

I hope they change the formula. I'm so sick and tired of violent cover shooters. the reboot is so deeply cynical in its bullshit

I think SE knows full well the mistakes that happened with ROTR and considering the importance of the brand, will give it at least another go. It's stupid to give up the ghost now when we know gamer reception wasn't the problem, a suicidal release plan was.

I sincerely hope not. We need a worthy dev to make actual tomb raiding games. You know puzzles, atmosphere, exploration and such? So glad it bombed. I know it's cruel but... Deserved.
Nice shitting on the game, to your info ROTTR actually fixes a lot of the issues you address compared to TR2013, but I guess you are to busy drive by posting to even have bothered to play it.

The first game did well on PS3 and 360 during its launch and got I think.....2-3 million sales during its first few months. Then the PS4 and X1 re-releases did well too, with 1-2 million sales (helped it came out right after the console launches early 2014).

I also think globetrotting makes it hard to push the survival angle in a believable manner. "Advance to the next checkpoint and then we're off to Barbados" wouldn't be at all conducive to the you against nature vibe that the series has done increasingly well up to this point.

Why did this game sell poorly?

I thought the first one was a phenomenon...

It was an exclusive for a console that while popular, isn't as big as the PS4. That plus the limited exclusivity deal pushed people away from getting an X1 thinking "I will get this on my PC or PS4 in the future, but not shelling out 300+ dollars for an X1 just for this".

So, that is why it didn't do as well as the 2013 reboot despite being a far stronger game based on feedback online and on Gaf.

Once it comes on PS4 and PC in addition to MS pushing the fact "Hey! We have a 360 version of this guys and its really good :D! Get this now!!!' in the future, the game will do well.

Hopefully it'll do well. But ROTR is going to have the exact same problem when it comes to PS4 at the end of next year. SE fucked it all round on this one.

I'm sure they will. If SE are serious about the franchise though I think they need to focus on three areas building from Rise:

Don't make it timed exclusive you idiots
Tone down the gore/violence porn (I remain unconvinced this is popular and I believe it hampered sales initially until SE dropped price drastically on the first reboot and didn't do Rise any favours either)
Improve the fucking script and VO work it's too sub-par vs competition

Otherwise stick to Rise template for success.

Oh and time the release better too you idiots (ideally by remaining in control of it fully).

Amazing game. I finally unwrapped my copy last night and it blew me away. I know Xbone isn't quite as powerful as PS4, but damn, ROTTR looks incredible and it's just a fantastic game. Also, my wife loves how they presented Lara and wants to play the game herself.

Not if the PS4 version has extra features or Square heavily pushes it (maybe link it up with FFXV and KHII.8, as both are releasing close to the PS4 port of RotTR).

If SE is going to act irrationally about the situation, I hope they do so by placing blame on Camilla Luddington and replacing her for the next game. Then the series could be truly great!

Edit: Beaten

I hope CD goes for an old Lara in their third game just so they can change the voice actor.

I hope so, I really enjoyed Legend, Anniversary, reboot and to a lesser extent Underworld. Haven't played Rise yet due to the XB1 exlusivity. I definitely wouldn't complain if they returned the series to it's globetrotting roots either.

It would be a shame if she loses work and reportedly the story of RotTR is better than the original, so I cannot comment on RotTR's story here.

But I hated, loathed the reboot's story a lot. That was the thing that turned what should of been a great game to me into just an okay one (that plus the gore and violence but I could deal with that....mostly). When a bad story is pushed into your face, you cannot help but find it distracting.

once they're done with the Definitive Edition, I'm sure they'll get another shot.

Yup. Wait till PC and PS4 players get to sink their teeth into the game. That outta bolster those sales figures. Such a shame it didn't sell well on Xbox One :( Really enjoyed TR and am looking forward to this next one.

Yeah. And most of that was in one month. Hell people still buying de De for ps4.

Yeah I double dipped for TR on PS3 and PS4 because I had such a good time with it.

I dunno if I agree. I think I'd like to see it handed over to another developer. CD had a few good ideas but I think it may be time to pass the torch now. I'd like to see what SE Montreal could do with enough resources; Lara Croft GO was fantastic.

I'd like to see TR move away from being a AAA cover shooter and perhaps transition into smaller budget titles that focus on what actually made Tomb Raider unique. I just don't see CD being the developer to do it. I'd love to see CD work on another Legacy of Kain so no need for them to be out of work :)

I think sales could have been better but MS did a good job making sure the 360 version doesn't exist so I don't think they care about sales, as long as they can list this game in xbox's (one), greatest lineup in history, 2015.

They'll get another shot and it will. Otherwise there's no point. The AA tier is basically gone at retail so if they don't go AAA they won't go.
I wouldn't be surprised if they started working on it after the holidays. They aren't going to be doing any work on the ports, that's Nixxes job, and the DLC doesn't require the entire team. And they'll probably budget it similar to Rise of the Tomb Raider.

All S-E really did was reset the counter for the franchise. They reset it with the Tomb Raider reboot, sold a bunch of copies at bargain prices to build up awareness and get more first day sales with the sequel, then proceeded to squander that with an ill timed exclusivity deal. Now they'll reset the counter again, sell a bunch of Rise copies at bargain prices to build up awareness, and hopefully don't sign another timed exclusivity deal.

You wouldn't believe how much I agree with you on this. You think you do, but you don't. This is why Uncharted 1 is still the dearest to me. It had the best atmosphere and not by a little but by a metric fuckton. Well it's all subjective of course and I do love UC2 and I understand why they'd go for the globe trotting epic but I too just happen to prefer the intimacy that the focus on one location can provide.

I don't get why some are acting as though RotTR disappointed. It's a great game and in fact better than its strongest competitions (read: Fallout and Halo) on many levels. Incompetent business practices is what hurt it the most.

Why is Tomb Raider competing with an open world first person shooter and a Halo sequel

That's enough for now, I want Soul Reaver 3.

I don't want a Legacy of Kain game from Crystal Dynamics. No Hennig anymore so what's the point?

Rather have Eidos Montreal do it.

Just do a proper trilogy remake. The original games, only with modern graphics.

... I mean, who can top Tony Jay as the Elder God anyway?

The large rifle was/is the best late-game gun though, only beaten by the bow. Shotgun is second best.

I agree another open area towards the end would have been a big improvement, but it's still a great game in my book.

I don't think the Black Shadow and Rattlesnake guns needed to exist at all.

It addresses some complaints, but not all, and it adds a host of new ones.

Sloppy and laggy controls, pointless filler sidequests and shop, samey terrible story, inferior combat, pointless microtransactions, awful bonus modes.

It's a great game and an improvement overall, though. But it feels like three step forwards, two steps back to me.

People keep mentioning the improved tombs in this game. Wtf it is pretty much the same 1 or 2 step crap from the 1st game just slightly more of them. I finished the game.
Optional tomb raider Lara Croft is such a boring character in the reboot, her design, her clothes everything is so dull. We will never see tombs or platforming the series was known for. The game is so piss easy it's laughable. Everything is context sensitive it feels like you don't really have control. Series needs an overhaul, a new writer, new designers and old tombs/platforming.

Optional Tomb Raider 1.5
