Why did this game sell poorly?

I thought the first one was a phenomenon...

-Terrible/non-existent marketing
-Initial Gamescom exclusive reveal brought nothing but terrible PR for the game
-Bad statements from both companies (Passion, expanding the franchise, wanting a Uncharted like game, we got a tomb raider game for PS4 and PC its that downloadable one)
-Continues dodging/obscuring the fact its a timed exclusive
-Square announced the PC and PS4 versions exist before it launched (PC spring 2016, PS4 fall 2016 where it will bomb again)
-Exclusive 1 TB bundle only at Best Buy for the US, no bundle for the UK
-Launched same day as Fallout 4 (Aaron beloved TR could compete with it)
-Xbox sales in Europe in general with TR being more of a franchise over there.

TR 2103 sold over 3 million initially but was a disappointment to SE, it broke even and probably made some profit after heavy discounts on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 and after the Definite edition.

There will be a sequel but you can beat your ass there will be no timed exclusivity and if there a deal imo it won't be with Microsoft

The pc version? Comes out next month doesn't it?

Nothing official, just a listing on Amazon France which is spotty at best.

I would love if Croft manor made return in the next game. And of course the butler! It was small zone but it was so much fun to explore and do the training stuff.

Square Enix's handling of the franchise has been questionable at best. The Crystal Dynamic devs deserve(d) better.

It's no worse than Eidos', really (and Square Europe is basically Eidos with a new name). The franchise has always been handled badly by its publisher, what with the annual releases on PS1 and then taking the franchise away from Core.

Rise improves on the reboot in almost every way. The endgame is too over-the-top shootbang, which is disappointing, but it's still a great title. Definitely in my top 10 this year.

I do hope SE/CD treats this franchise with a little more care next time, this game deserves better.

I havent followed close enough.

Why does something like uncharted sell like crazy,a dn people are even hungry for more...aka 4...yet this sells badly?

I know i didnt buy it bc i have yet to beat the original and id rather wait for a better version on ps4, so is it strictly just selling poor bc no ps sales?

I kind of liked Underworld (especially the water parts) so it would really be a shame if CD never got another stab at the series after that.

RotTR was one of the best games I've played this year. Definitely want another game from CD.

The game was really good looking on xbox, and I'd like to give it a go on PC.

They've been making TR games for almost 10 years now. Pretty sure it's not going to stop right after they just put out the sequel to the highest selling game in the franchise.

I'm pretty excited to play the PC version. It should be a really nice looking game.

Hopefully that Amazon France leak wasn't too far from the real date.

Just hand the IP over to Platinum, would be less of a difference than classic Tomb Raider vs. the reboot.
Seriously though, mainline games can die for all I care, since they are just a reskinned generic Uncharted clone. Just give me Lara Croft Go 2

Hasn't sold enough only because of the exclusivity deal with Microsoft. If it had launched simultaneously on PS4, PC, and XBO it would've made a bigger splash for sure.

Judging by their job postings they have zero ambitions to do anything except Tomb Raider for the next 300 years so you'll probably be satisfied.

I love the suggestions in the OP. I kind of tolerated some of the totally non Lara, non TR stuff in the first one because it's an origin story blah blah blah. But we're at number two now, (well I guess they skipped Tomb Knight, so maybe part 3 - holy shit their naming is dumb. First we're the Tomb Raider, but then we're just Rising to the occasion to become the Tomb Raider. They need to make their mind up). It's time they scrapped the 'I'm new to Tomb Raiding' thing and made Lara an actual professional again. This is something I figured we would get for sure given the end of the first game with the twin pistols and her being a general natural badass from the first minute. They need to actually bridge the gap between the naive and inexperienced Lara from the first game and the cocky strong Lara that is the only reason the series has any iconic status at all. Obviously it's going to be a more grounded version of that character but they have to make some effort to go there, mechanically and narratively.

I sincerely hope not. We need a worthy dev to make actual tomb raiding games. You know puzzles, atmosphere, exploration and such? So glad it bombed. I know it's cruel but... Deserved.
Such a disgusting attitude to have. It's one thing to be disappointed, but to wish for failure just because what they put out doesn't cater to your specific needs is ridiculous. These aren't monkeys, they're people with families to feed.

Edit: On topic though, I haven't had a chance to pick up ROTR due to how big my backlog is, but I'll definitely download this week if it's on sale. From what I've heard so far, it sounds like a massive improvement over the reboot, so hopefully sales pick up over the holiday sales due to the positive word of mouth.

When can we expect them to change the name Crystal Dynamic to Croft Studios? Long live sequels.

Its a fantastic game, the critical reception has been very positive. I think its actually the best reviewed X1 exclusive this year. Its sales have been poor because of a terrible choice of release window and its timed exclusivity to an unpopular platform. My guess is that it will have a long tail sales wise due to PS4 and PC sales later next year.

I'd rather see a different studio try to go back to the roots of the franchise since CD has turned it into a standard cover shooter full of QTEs and autoplatforming. If they stay on I hope they learn that trying to emulate Naughty Dog games (Uncharted with the reboot and now some TLOU sprinkled in Rise) is a losing proposition and to do their own thing, maybe what the original series was good at that no one else is doing now. Please watch this CD and realize what TR (and most AAA games) have lost: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQRr3pXxsGo

People often mistake the old game's inconsistent blurry textures, tank like controls and confusing level design as "puzzles". Sure the game's had more puzzle rooms than the new game's have (and it's something they should improve on for the third game) but most of the game's difficulty wasn't a result of well made puzzles - but the player wrestling with the controls. CD's previous efforts are better examples of bringing Tomb Raider to a modern audience and if those principles and concepts (like the globtroting aspects, vehicle sequences, challenging puzzles) were married with the Reboot's gameplay, we would probably have the perfect "Tomb Raider formula".

But in saying this, Rise of The Tomb Raider is one of the best third person action games on the market - and like with any reboot, you create a division between gamer's who have convinced themselves the old game's are better and gamer's who have accepted the changes and are ready to move on. CD just needs to find a way to please both sides (which I believe they got ever closer to doing with RotTR)

As an old school Tomb Raider fan, I can't tell you how disappointed I was in the Reboot. It felt like such a horribly written story in cinematic third person shooter game - without any of the charm, puzzles or any of the other Core elements in the design.

I bought an XBO for RoTR. I don't know if it was the surprising openness of the new hubs, the outfits, the swan dives, the new puzzle rooms that required more thought - but it all offset some of the clunky incessant shooting that plagued the first game for me. And it was one of my favorite games of this year - it had heart. The story, yeah, was pretty cliched but it was a ton of fun to explore and upgrade. I had a wonderful time, and it really showed that CD was listening and really trying honor some of the elements that made TR everything great.

I hope they get one more shot, without stupid exclusivity clauses. I can't wait to replay the game on PC.

Yup. Wait till PC and PS4 players get to sink their teeth into the game.

I read this a lot here and never understand it. PC? Sure, whatever. But 2016 is a packed year for PS4, including The Real Deal (Uncharted 4). RotR would have to strategically release during the driest time of the year to get substantial sales from PS4 owners.

That was a really good watch!! Even having multiple difficulty levels could be a great way to justify this to Square Enix execs (The recent Thief, another Square Enix published game did this). You could have the standard normal difficulty with the comforts of automated climbing and a harsher difficulty with a grip meter etc. There's DLC coming the RotTR this month which adds a new survival mode to the game (eating, considering warmth and ammo are priorities) with game's like DAYZ, Minecraft and Don't Starve showing us that the market is more accepting of these demanding experiences - perhaps we could this DLC mode more strongly implemented in the next TR game?

Why does eveyone want tomb raider too be a survival game?

Eh, not everyone. Was cover shooting and stealth kills really the direction TR needed to go? To appeal to the bros and brahs of the world.

Seems like a natural progression and more realistic. The gunplay in the old games was awful and looked almost like something out of a John Woo movie.

Well the new rebooted series really went for a more realistic and gritty angle than the previous installments. Given that and the already existing food, hunting and crafting elements, it seems like a natural fit for the series.

I dont think the 3rd time is going to be the one that finally does gangbusters but sure... give them another swing at it. The quality is mostly there.

I hope CD is working on something big and not Tomb Raider related though.

Why would you expect them to drop their most valuable and iconic IP by far?

"I hope Ubisoft gets another shot at Assassin's Creed,,,:"

This is a bad comment.

To be happy that other peoples work bomb because you disagree with the direction is a pretty unappealing opinion in and of itself, but then there is the thing about the old TR games not having any amount of thoughtful puzzles and atmosphere as much as you would like to think.

CD made a fantastic tomb raider, and while it lacked the cave exploration, it was EASILY. And I mean, easily the best tomb raider. It reinvented a franchise that was most well known for the boobs of the main character and the pioneering 3D technology, but if you want to paint a picture that suggests that Tomb Raider had great atmosphere and puzzles and exploration. Yeahh, no. Even for its time among its contemporaries you had a vast array of much more thoughtful adventure and exploration games.

Just finished Rise of Tomb Raider and I have to say its a pretty damn good game. Hell, its probably the best Tomb Raider since Anniversary. It would have been a great game if they had just added a third large open world area before the climax and could fix the shooting mechanics (bow and shotgun are the only weapons that feel good in the game).

Its sad just how poorly the game has sold though. I fear the franchise might be dead after this one. I do think if a third game is made CD needs to bring back some of the features of the old games. Things I would like to see are:

-Globe trotting - take me to more than one location. Use Dragon Age Inquisition as an example for using multiple open worlds. Lara can travel back and forth via her private plane.
- Croft Manor - give it to me! Make it her base of operations for the globe trotting. As she collects more gear for traversal allow her to open up more of the secrets of the manor
- Gymnastics - if lara is going to take on the big bads all by herself she needs to train. No more clumsy lara in the future please. Bring back uber gymnast lara with neat combat maneuvers. Put a training room in croft manor too.
- Dual pistols - for Odin's sake give lara her fucking second pistol. Sick of the Katnis pandering too.
- Fix the shooting Mechanics - they are WAY to floaty right now and most of the guns feel like shit.
- Fix Aiming Perspective - when you aim in these new games it puts lara on the far side of the screen which looks terrible and completely fucks up perspective. Look at gears of war or saints row 3 for proper 3rd person positioning when aiming.
- Full ability to swim underwater - The "on rails" under water swimming sucks.

Regardless I just hope a new game gets made.

I think that RotTR will do very well when it is released on PC at least.

It has a healthy following there so I really don't think that RotTR will be the last entry in the series.

That being said, I can't wait for the game to be released on PC, then I will get back to you on what needs to improve.

Isn't a major reason for the healthy following on PC because we were able to get it for 5 bucks on Steam relatively quickly after launch? I don't see ROTR having the same "I need to play this NOW" type of mentality among PC gamers that something like Fallout 4 had. TR 2013 was the poster child game for people waiting for sales.

What they need to do is simple. Get rid of this reboot nonsense and bring back classic Lara Croft in all her splendor. Give us a mixture of the classics with the ease of use from the second series, maybe with some of the bombast of the reboot series, keep the violence down to a T rating (If this game gets an M, hopefully it wouldn't be for violence), and just make it a fun series again.

Classic Lara Croft acted like she really enjoyed what she was doing, and that enjoyment was passed on the player. I'd like to see that brought back.

PS. Hire anyone else other than Rhianna Pratchett to write it.

FWIW I'm really looking forward to it on Steam.

I really love the new direction of the both new Tomb Raider's. Lara's character is much more of a strong female lead instead of a caricature. That being said, I can't believe how bad the frame rate is on RotTR during the
base where you meet the vilagers
. It's got to be mid 20's.

I beat the first one on PC first, then on Xbox again when it was released for free. I'm sure I'll beat this one on Xbox and then buy the definitive edition on PC and play through it again.

I'm sure after the PS4/PC launch it'll do better than the first one. Hopefully they don't pull this garbage a second time though.

I'll pick it up down the line for, hopefully, my PS4. Surely won't be at full price though, not after making me wait a year.

If you're going for the grounded TR then yeah. But that's like saying the next "grounded POP will do away with the acrobatics as a "natural" progression.
