So I'm new to whatever is going on with this game. Is there a community mod available right now?

If you google a nifty guide to halo online there is a document that explains what's happening.
You can join the eldorito IRC channel at gamesurge to get info on the multiplayer mod files.

I don't know whether or not it's acceptable to speak about this here so if there's a problem, just let me know but otherwise, I spent all last night playing custom games with a few of my friends from high school and damn, the nostalgia this thing carries...

These guys and I founded our friendships over Halo 3 back in the day so all of us sitting around, 1 a.m., getting rounds of Oddball on Guardian was just like being back in high school, I had an absolute blast.

If Microsoft would bring this stateside in a more, er, legitimate manner, I'd log hundreds of hours and probably pay into their microtransaction system too.

The game is great, people of all regions and territories should be able to enjoy it with official support, it's a shame Microsoft is playing this one so close to the chest and keeping it Russian-exclusive for the near future.

Got access to what they called "Closed alpha test". Not sure if there are any NDA and not that I care. Downloading right now, can provide with some info if interested.

Well, I played two matches and all I have to say... is that I don't know. If that what Halo is, then I don't like Halo. If that is not Halo, then, obviously, this game is garbage.

On my first try game failed to connect to servers, but was fine on second one. First thing obviously - options menu. By default game actually turns Aim Assists on, has "50" Mouse Acceleration (I have no idea what 50 stands for here). I have 16:10 monitor, as result game is in letter-box mode. Oh boy, 2015 PC only game that does not support 16:10 resolutions, how nice.
Game consists of 3 classes, Assault, Sniper and Tactician. Each has separate class tree and require research point in order to unlock stuff.
Here is the kicker - research points are only granted for completing Trials. Trials by themselves require purchased weapons which are direct upgrades from default ones. One example would be "Kill 5 people with Magnum +DMG". You can buy those weapons either with cash or XP. But the thing is, you are not actually buying them like League or HoTS, you only rent them, for 6 hours I believe. Are those real time or gameplay - I dont know. To give you some example of how much things cost and how much you earn here are the screenshots of shop and post game screen. On second screen numbers are semi-hidden, but from what I understood everyone have boosts activated for double certs from XP (you can see it in the 4th line after XP gains in the right bottom corner).
I am gonna be honest - I am not gonna play this game any more. People who like Halo will probably enjoy it, shooting feels solid, however lack of recoil and reliance on CoF as mechanic for stopping people from spray'n'praying does not suit me at all. Vehicles feel stiff and turning is done with the mouse. Here is the rest of the screenshots that I took.
I will keep the game on my hard drive for one more day and after that uninstall it. So if you have any questions or what info on something else, well, you have one day for that.

Is there more armor in the game besides the Halo 4 variants?
I never played Halo, so I have no idea which of them is from Halo 4. I believe armor is not entirely cosmetic, it also gives you stat boots and like weapons, can be only rented.

I personally like steering vehicles with the mouse because it feels like I have a lot finer control than just using WASD / arrow keys.

I actually like the idea of working to unlock things and having trials/ tasks within the multiplayer. Not cool with renting weapons or microtrans forced but if it's all optional, that's cool. I'm interested in playing. Are there any native english options or am I forced to mod in order to get those?

There was no language options and I am pretty sure game is\will be region locked.

So, word is that this is being officially shitcanned. RIP 2015-2015, it's almost like they released a Halo game exclusively in a region that hates Halo.

Ahem, with this announcement, is El Dorito still regarded as piracy by the mods? Because from the looks of things it's going to be the only version available anymore ala PSO Blue Burst.

MS: "See? PC market clearly doesn't want a Halo game. We tested the waters so you can't blame us."

Pretty sure they were testing F2P mechanics in Halo and how it could work for the game. The fact it was Russia only tells you it was only a test bed for the game.

I do however wish that Avalanche remake was used elsewhere. It's crazy how between things like Halo Online, MCC/H2A there are a ton of new maps and assets created that just aren't used. I mean H2A brought back the Hornet but there are no flying UNSC vehicles in Halo 5.

I may or may have not tried it.
And I may or not may have thought it was ace.
It may or may not have introduced me to BTB.
I may have or not thought BTB was ace.

What a shame.

This game is running really well with a super small community on the subreddit for halo online. The modded version has plenty of extra maps and they are working on porting maps in from the console files (possible yet very tedious to manually assign boundaries). With a community it will do really well.

Oh and they got forge mode to work as well. Which if I remember was never even fully implemented in the official PC version. So the modded version was leaps ahead as far as content. They used the official updates as more stable releases with the occasional addition of map files.

Just got an email, excuse the Google translate.

Halo Online takes time out

Spartan, together with Microsoft, we suspend tests Halo Online, to significantly improve the game client. The tests will be resumed after the necessary changes will be made. The exact opening date we announced.

Therefore, we will return the money for the purchase of kits in full to the accounts of users and choose one izvariantov compensation. You can just get the money back, but you can get the money to an account in Fogeyme and take advantage of other benefits.

We, along with 343 Industries apologize to all the players Halo Online and especially to those who helped us in testing and development of the project. We hope that when we open it again, you'll be with us!

So Microsoft is literally giving all the money back

but you know, playing custom private games in a free game was still somehow redefined as "piracy".

At least the mod community seems decently strong for it. Hopefully this not doing well doesn't lower the already low chances of us getting Halo 3 or Reach for PC soonish.

Probably won't happen REQs were a much more profitable system and better all around

Maybe after seeing the money from REQ packs, they simply thought "fuck it, may as well just port Halo 5's MP over, and make it F2P later down the line".

I think that'd be a better idea tbh.

Yes, because MS is free to offer refunds for their project if they take it down. It's not your place to decide it's free before the fact.

Honestly I think that's probably why they pulled the plug. REQs are better in so many ways in terms of money and not making players angry as all can be.

The game never required you to buy anything. Once again, MS stated the game was free, and explicitly said the issue was they didn't want American players on Russian servers. But for some reason people were suddenly convinced getting around a region lock and improving private games in a FREE game = piracy when other games are openly region-broken and regionlocking is otherwise frowned upon, because they conflated map modding as getting paid items for free, when you never could get any MT in this game for free, even with the tools used to mod it, and was never a goal of the modders.

Nobody pirated a fucking thing from Microsoft.

Wanting to modify a Halo 3 map so there's no sprint and removes additional spartan abilities added into the game isn't piracy.

We've been over this... circumventing a game's monetisation system in order to play it for free is either piracy, or at the very least equivalent to it. They give you the game under the agreement that you adhere to their terms, and use it on their servers (where not paying presents disadvantages, so they actually have a chance at making some money from its development). There are a TON of clients that you can obtain for free (like say Ableton Live), but if I then circumvent the limitations the client has in order to not have to pay for the rest of the functionality, then I'm pirating that software. It doesn't matter how the files got on my HDD.

Sega don't want US players on JP PSO2 either, but if someone throws up a private SCHTHACK-like server right now, and we all jump on it to play all PSO2's content, without the monetisation in place, then we're pirates. End of.

this was never done and was outside of dewrito's capability anyway

the same type of tool (XBC, Kai, etc) used to play Halo 2 LAN over the internet was also not called circumventing Live nor ever called piracy. Nor was using it to play 360 games' LAN modes online called piracy, even though you had to circumvent Microsoft's LAN ping check to do it.

you could openly download the client directly from microsoft with no extra software.

The software was for modifying and playing private games, not for piracy, was never capable of piracy, and does not give you paid anything for free.
