You say that as if the PS3 sold well. Lowered expectations and all.

I also doubt the PS4 is gonna have the legs of the PS3.

It sold enough for Japanese devs to still consider it worthwhile to makes games for it. If the PS4 can sell enough to keep Japanese devs interested that's enough for me. :)

The PS3 did very well, 10-11 million isn't horrible by any standard or expectation, that's almost half as well as it did in the US, with only one third of the population.

Just because it didn't do astronomical numbers like the PS2 doesn't mean it did horrible.

Yes it is. Forgive me for basking in the glory that the original vision of Xbox One was dramatically declined by gamers around the world.

Without a doubt, it saved the industry I am very passionate about. Or at the very least I am still a console gamer as a result.

And by the way: I've championed the death of VR when Microsoft are not even in the game. Only Sony. Would a "Sony fanboy" really do that? I certainly wouldn't think so...

It's been 2 years man. We are all fine now. Time to find a different passion.

Most department stores don't even stock it over here. It has a lower retail profile than the Vita does in the West. I'm not sure if MS will just bleed money indefinitely in this country just to keep a foothold, but there's really nothing much they can do to stimulate sales at this point unless they want to start bankrolling meaningful Japanese exclusives again. Which they don't seem to.

I'm genuinely starting to believe you're in love with Microsoft. You can't help but bring them into everything you say.

Somewhere far, far away in the future of an alternate universe... the Xbawks U has sold extremely well in Japan and is a tour de force there. It is also a hybrid handheld and can hook up to your TV via hdmi mini ports for console like gameplay. It can also holographically render waifan in full 5D.

The End.

The Xbone is a bomb in Japan, shocker. Less of a shock that the Sony Fanboyism runs rampant in threads like these. As a person who (shockingly) loves video games and owns a Xbone, PS4, and Wii U find it a bit tired of the xbone mud slinging that continues on GAF. All of the systems have their strengths. PS4 is obviously the most powerful system this generation, Cerny and Co. did a great job. Xbone was never going to succeed in Japan, and MS barely tried this go round there. Xbone has an amazing first party lineup, as does wii u. The latter is a complete commercial failure but one of my favorite systems. The former I spend a lot of time on forza and halo. For all its strengths, the PS4 first party lineup has been very weak thus far but the future seems promising at least. I do play most of my multiplats on PS4 due to the performance advantage and remote play (when there isn't a PC version available or the PC port is phoned in).

Do we love games GAF or do we just love stirring the shit on here?
I already know the answer ;)-

Xbox always has an amazing lineup in the first years untill they jump ship early.

Playstation always releases steady amount of first pary titles that last the whole generation.

I believe that the size could also factors into japans dislike of xbox one that monster is huge I barely had enough room for it.

I know that Sony first party is often quite slow in the beginning of a new console cycle, but there are many things I would call the Xbox 1st party lineup, but amazing certainly isn't one of them. Same old dead tired franchises and a few new ones.

And when it comes to Sunset Overdrive, I bought that amazing white console which to me is still the prettiest console in this gen. But can we stop calling that game good or amazing? Or then start doing the same song and dance about Infamous or some other mediocre PS exclusive. Was a huge fan of Insomniac but that game was god awful. If your game has nothing else but good colour scheme and a neat traversal system, that's not a good recipe for an open world game. The script for that thing was definitely written with crayons.

what is with japan that they don't like consoles. is the ps4 popular there? if so then why do they not like the xb1 as much when it is pretty much the same thing.

PS3 did not do very well nor did it horrible in Japan.
It's a mid way.
PS3 sold about a third in Japan, compared to what it sold in US.

Look....I don't know why you should be ashamed to call yourself a Sony Fanboy. You are getting clowned for denying it. Own it and move on. Acceptance is not a bad thing. Just call a spade a spade. You've been dragged enough...

Oh, honey... it's 2016 now. It's time to stop basking.

Microsoft's approach to the One in Japan is simply breathtaking. I'm in awe. Making the stock so low and turning it into a collector's item.

Once scalebound comes out, they'll probably starve the channels until the levy breaks and the sales just come pouring in.

Once something is this hard to find, it'll get backed with a Wii like fervor.

Hasn't the Xbox been unpopular in Japan for like....the entirety of its existence

the first one failed in Japan

the second one failed in Japan

the third one is failing in Japan

the next one will fail in Japan

Pancake Mix

Copied someone else's pancake recipe
The OG Xbox and even 360 at times had okayish runs, failure is an overstatement aside from the immense effort Microsoft put in with devs and marketing which probably cost a lot. DOA games at launch were part of that, as was the 360's JRPG's. Those times are long over though.

At this rate I'd be shocked if the Xbox One sold as much as the original Xbox's first week back in 2002 in its entire lifetime. IIRC it was over 120k.

Yah but that doesn't mean we can't have a little fun with it now and then!

Xbox One is doing so terribly across the world outside of NA and the UK that it's almost like some unseen Godlike force tipped the balance in Sony's favour causing them to do so exceptionally well. Then again I guess Sony did everything right this generation whilst Microsoft did everything wrong. Sony's just conquering the world right now. During the days of the 360 I genuinely believed Xbox was going to win for every subsequent generation. Never in Japan but particularly in Western territories. I guess back then everyone saw it as a good console so everyone loved it. Now? The world just loves Sony and obviously that's going to be particularly evident in their home turf of Japan.

I mean let's be honest, Xbox never stood a chance in Japan - but I'm just shocked at how severely it's getting economically slammed.

I'm just glad Japanese developers are still making console games, at least for PS4(and PC). I think the industry would be a lot poorer if they all went off to mobile. If that means Capcom can only make their biggest franchises like SF/MH/RE/DMC5(its coming), thats better than nothing.

FTFY

Yep. Xbox One has failed so spectacularly in Japan, much more so than either of its predecessors, that I firmly believe this will be the last Xbox console ever released in Japan.

Its sales numbers are beyond horrible.

First week sales:

Xbox: 123,929

Xbox 360: 62,135

Xbox One: 23,562

Lifetime-to-date sales:

Xbox: 472,992

Xbox 360: 1,617,825

Xbox One: 64,711

You should know by now that brand loyalty is not as powerful as people think it is in this industry. What made you think that Xbox would be some unstoppable force after Sony fumbled with the PS3? Were you oblivious to the sales of the PS1 and PS2? After E3 2013 it should have been incredibly obvious where this generation was headed. Sony made a better console, and more people are buying it. It's really as simple as that.

You should keep in mind as well that Sony has already had two of the most successful systems of all time before the PS3 came out. People around the world have loved PlayStation a lot longer than they've loved Xbox. The PS3 was a small blip in their dominance over the last 20 years.

It was pretty obvious that Microsoft wasn't even trying in Japan this gen. With the XB and X360, they at least tried to carve out niche markets in Japan. The XB had the DOA/Ninja Gaiden fans and some Sega fans in Japan, and the X360 had some JRPG exclusives, some multiplayer games that appealed to Japanese gamers and some shmups. Halo and Halo 2 were even promoted in Japan on the OG XB and had decent sales for a western game and a small but loyal following. With the One though, Microsoft brought nothing to the table. At this point, the XB1 is in Japan so that Microsoft can court Japanese developers to release games for the platform in North America and Europe.

Microsoft created this problem themselves. Europe is a similar story. Don't make a product entirely US-centric and attempt to sell it worldwide.

It's like trying to sell basketball globally. Lots of US customers would be interested, everyone else not so much.

At least PlayStation is diverse and is messaged globally. They are doing a vastly superior job at that.

Is it like that time an ignorant dude said western weren't popular in Europe or something?

Imagine that, 1/3 of all Xbone were sold in the 1rst week.
That's worse legs than many games.
