Just 99 Xbox Ones were sold in Japan last week

xbone is failing in Japan because their games don't appeal to the market. The Japanese market is now dominated by handheld and mobile. PS4 isn't doing particularly well in Japan either. Combined with the fact that MS never really put much priority towards Japanese market and you end up with almost no sales.

Pretty much.

GEO is a chain of DVD rental stores. They also sell new and second-hand consoles. If you like used games, it is well worth checking out your local GEO. They don't have much in the way of super-rare collectables, but they have most regular releases going back to the PS2 days and a few PS games. Do a google image search for, say, Geo Nakano Sakaue (my local) and you'll see what one of their stores looks like.

And welcome to Japan.

Ah ok, and thanks.

Too bad that's an oversimplification of the situation. If they were so proud if their own things no American company would trive there. McDonald's wouldn't be there, Apple wouldn't be there, hell Microsoft themselves with windows wouldn't be there. This is the line if thinking someone wants to take to justify why the Xbox isn't doing well there with what seems like the right answer but ignoring every instance that that answer contradicts them.

McDonalds are seeing a fair downturn, but the "which western companies will do well and which wont" thing seems so random : burger king just didn't take off, McDonalds did but is not having trouble, Pizza Hut is doing okay... Krispy Kremes is going nuts and MS is ... well... zombiefied at the moment.

I can't think of a store where Xbox One isn't stuffed in the back, showing a rack of titles that you can get on the PS4, plus the machine is in the same price range. Unless you really really like Forza, Gears, and Halo (which the Japanese are kind of "they're alright" on) then there is no huge reason to pick up an Xb1 for them.

McDonald's is actually doing horribly everywhere right now, especially back home in the US.

I think that's kind of his point. It's not just consumers, but devs that have the pride and don't want to invest in the console.

Not saying that I agree with him though.

It's all about business. Even last gen when the 360 had the multi plat and userbase advantage, the majority of the Japanese developed multiplat games performed better on PS3 sales wise.

When you take away the ease of development and usebase advantage, as well as your competition being a lot more aggressive this time around, the sales results are going to be even more lopsided.

FF Type 0's sales would be a bit of a shock to S-E and it's interesting that since then, they haven't announced a single Japanese developed rpg on X1.

MS bet on Japanese game getting less relevant on WW market is better than Xbox getting more relevant on Japan market.

I knew Microsoft's take one down, pass it around, 98 more Xboxs to sell in Japan strategy would end in disaster.

japanese are nazis when it comes to consoles. they are super proud of their own stuff.

there was a super awesome article about that on eurogamer regarding this "problem".

It's a Sakujou appearance! There's another space on my bingo card.

pride? japanese devs don't invest on xb1 games because 'nobody' buys them. Even in the US where the xbox is competitive, japanese games sales on xbox are terribly low.

Devs started bailing out when most of their 360 initiatives weren't successful, they had no reason to try again on a much less competitive box.

Probably due to a jingoistic backlash resulting from a simmering resentment of being sold German sandwiches and french style potatoes. Muricans don't truck with immigrant foods.

Lol. At least their desperation finally forced them to start selling fried apple and other fried seasonal pies here. Those pies are so much better than the horrible microwaved ones we used to have exclusively in the US (while everyone else in the world had the superior fried ones).

The recent experiment of allowing you to "build your own sandwich" on the other hand...

I quite like the build your own sandwich thing they've started in NZ: I can add mushrooms to everything :)

I'm surprised the US pies were microwaved as opposed to deep fried, weird.

I really want to buy one but they're still being sold at the full retail price.
With sales figures this bad I'm surprised they haven't heavily discounted them yet.
Maybe when they dip below the double figures they'll do something.

And they were all sold to marines stationed over there I bet lol. I love xbox one, but Japanese people are about as likely to buy an x1 as they are to buy a chevy. I don't think it has anything to do with the xbox lacking in any way. Just look at the previous generation. PS3 almost always had the inferior version of every game, but that's what they bought.

I switched to an alt account to ditch my embarrassing tag so I could be an embarrassing Naughty Dog fanboy in peace. Ask me anything!

Wow. This is truly insightful.

"In this thread" - excellent qualifier. I decline to detective GAF to serve ether. Next time, point your snark at someone else.

I'm sure Microsoft is really glad you're there to protect it from everyone being so mean to the inanimate box it sells like shit in Japan.

Well you were referencing this thread in your post, so of course I would assume that's what you were talking about.
Either way, you could detective GAF me if you like. I'm open for it. If you can find a pattern of behaviour where I openly shit on 'the box' without it being an obvious parody of previous users' comment then go ahead.
I tend not to take anything out on inanimate objects such as 'the box', I generally just poke a bit of fun at those who seem to take their loyalties a little too seriously.
Anyway, we're completely off topic so we should wrap this up.

Edit: Oh, well uh. Yeah. I guess that's all done and dusted. Back to the topic at hand.

As it stands now that's pretty much the gist of it. If Sony can't get the PS4 to sell at least half-decently in Japan this year with the games they're releasing I don't think there's much of a chance of a turn-around.

That has nothing to do with it. Japan loves Hollywood movies and American culture in general. The XB1 just doesn't have the games they want.

Well, "love" is a strong word as far as American movies go.

They love Disney and Jim Cameron. They're also pretty down with Harry Potter and Spider-Man, but just not ready to commit, you know?

Hmm, wouldn't think this thread would have gone on this long. I mean, why should we care about the Xbox brand's sales in Japan? Microsoft sure as hell doesn't.
