Microsoft announces Xbox Live cross-network (PSN and other networks) play

This came out of absolutely nowhere. Definitely the kind of thing you'd announce at E3 or something.

Makes me wonder what else MS is cooking up...

Amazing news nonetheless! Almost too good to be true!

So now people can start fighting over witch platform has the better players?
This is great news, wish that this would have happened sooner.

I look forward to being able to play with a larger group of people online. Though I hope I can tell which system a player has when they scream immature obscenities into their headset.

Why would you specifically name your competition?

Besides, there are other networks out there besides PSN

Steam and PSN are the only ones big enough I can think of, well if they port League of Legends into consoles it would be one more huge enough.

GDC starts today. The E3 audience wouldn't care.

I wonder if Sony would do this, because wouldnt it now benefit MS way more than Sony since they have the bigger MP community?

I hope Sony does it and that major devs follow suit

I don't think Sony ever had a policy against it to be honest. They're probably fine letting the developer do whatever they want as long as a game isn't full of hacks.

I'm just predicting, like many others, that Xb2 will be a low end Win10 HTPC with the Xbox name on it
Oh well, actually since the Win10 update, Xbox One already is it: you don't need to wait for X4 (Xb2? this is the third one). But it still keeps and will keep a console's characteristics: fixed hardware, easy installation/upgrades cycle and so on.

Will I be able to play Destiny and the Division with my XBL and PC friends?

Inly if the devs add support and I would think it's more then just a few lines of code to do so.

It's always possible Destiny 2 and other big game sequels could allow it, dev and publishers choice though.

I hope this will make people realize that the Dualshock 4 is simply awful for shooters once a shooter gets cross-play

imo of course

EDIT: I genuinely don't want people to think of this as some fan boyish tirade. I mean no ill will from this post, seriously. Play what you prefer with.

About time they caught up in this issue. Now we just need Nintendo to allow cross network play and we'll have all three.

Nintendo is allowing cross-play since forever already. Get out from under the rock.

Edit: also this is nothing if the developers don't implement it.

Cool feature, but I think this only will benefit Xbox and PC initially. I can't seem many devs supporting cross-platform play between Xbox and PSN. Not worth the extra coding complexity & dev time.

Wow! I am so confused by MS right now. Lol. One moment they appear to be building a walled garden the next they are building bridges to other communities.

They adapt. They tried with the "wall" philosphy, it failed and they blamed communication when players refuse it while it was just one of the dumbass move ever made by a big gaming company. Now, they're trying with the "bridge" philosophy and this is great : no need for marketing shit, just throw the good moves and profit from it.

More bridge, less walls is great for players.

I think it is worth it. We don't need "many devs" supporting it, we just the need the "big names" of online gaming supporting it. When you build a game like Final fantasy XIV or Call of Duty, you don't want the community to be divised between platforms, it's not natural at all and this is the worst situation for big games like this. The more players you have on the same server, the easier it is to find a match, a party, or another player to play with, even when the game did not sell well on one particular platform. This is huge.

Just think of the difference between SFIV and SFV. SFIV's community on pc wasn't really healthy, it was really hard to find a match. SFV community is healthier bu a large margin thank to cross platform even when the game sold way less than its predecessor.

Devs accepted it until now because there was no other choice for online gaming. Isn't the case anymore, and there is big potential here.

Microsoft making even less of a compelling reason to own an Xbox. Nonetheless I'm impressed with this and a lot of their recent moves.

I'm not so sure about Sony as some others here are. Consoles are network goods, the more of them you sell the bigger your network gets, the more enticing the good itself is for more people, these people buy the good, the network gets bigger and so one. "All my friends are on PSN" is a competitive advantage that I'm sure Sony won't give up that easily. No matter what they have said in the past.

We now need some PlayStation exclusive cars in Rocket League so that we can go head to head with the Warthogs and such. So cool.
