Microsoft announces Xbox Live cross-network (PSN and other networks) play

I notice everyone keeps bringing up big AAA third-party titles (like CoD/Battlefield/Destiny) but, this seems to me like it's clearly only meant for id@xbox games. Like, why else would it be specifically Chris Charla under the title "ID@Xbox Updates?"

It's still cool, and all, but, not so sure it means all third-party games from big publishers can do this, yet.

Agreed. Expectations are tepid at this point. If for all, then there has to be some deals arranged. More than likely a catch, where you have to Azure and MSFT sees coin from that. Thus it may become a stand-off since Sony uses Amazon, and EA uses their own servers.

This will not solve the " my friends are only on ps4". It will either be only used for matchmaking or each game will have their own friends list. You will not send messages or games invites from xbox to stream or PS.

This.

Each game will have its own in game friends list ala ESO.

Honestly this probably helps ms in this case when more people are on ps4 to be able to say you won't lose playing with friends if you prefer the Xbox one (or the PC). As a ps4 owner though I'm happy about it cause this means games can be cross platform (from what I understand some weren't cause of the clause saying they couldn't have seperate features if they were on another platform and they wanted the game on Xbox and cross play being a feature). This means now that if elder scrolls online takes advantage of this and allows cross play from PC to PS4 I can play with my cousin if I decide to get the game.

This is absolutely fantastic! It took its time, but well done of Microsoft to finally open up on this. To even think that by the end of the year it is a slight possibility that I get to play with my other friends on other systems is something I never thought would be possible.

You're taking the right first steps, MS.

For them it's basically perfect. "Why would you buy game XYZ on Xbox when there are way more PSN accounts out there?" becomes a meaningless argument and now it is up to Sony to be the bad guy if they say no.

I like this Microsoft. Fisty.
Sony has allowed it since ff11. Get out of here with this "Sony is the bad guy" talk. The fact of the matter is that the devs decide if they want to mix pools of players.

This is awesome! I hope that future MP games like Battlefield and COD will have a unified pool of players at least for the consoles.

I hope this will make people realize that the Dualshock 4 is simply awful for shooters once a shooter gets cross-play

Is this cheerleading, fanboyish bullshit really appropriate for this thread ?
Protip: Tons of gamers, including me, disagree completely with you.

For those wondering, games like Dreii currently allow cross-platform play between PlayStation 4, PS Vita, Wii U, PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android. Sounds like Xbox will finally be joining everyone else.

It'll be interesting to see how limited this will end up being. I can't see party chat working across consoles. Not even sure how you would invite friends on a PS4 to a game on Rocket League. It's good news for everyone though.

Who is to say MS and Sony or Nintendo couldn't work together on a common "cross network" party app?

Because, like it says in the OP (and, you know, the source), it was ID@Xbox devs who got the ball rolling on the policy shift. Nowhere does it say that only indie devs will be allowed to do cross platform multi.

I'm thinking right now if Nintendo would co-operate on a cross-play initiative with Sony and MS if NX turns out to be the next home console. Maybe they are going to be the "bad guys" concerning this.

this had to happened so microsoft could get 3rd party games with multiplayer on the windows 10 store without them forcing the devs/pubs into being exclusive to their store or splitting their pc population.

Well now we will see.

That Final Fantasy game was only coming to PS4 because of it right?
Let's see if that was actually the case
Well we already know it was - "The main reason from our side is that I don't want the community to be divided; to be split into two or more. For example, one player might be on the PC version, another might be on the PS4 version, and I'm playing the Xbox version - but we're not able to join the same game servers.
whether it comes now would be if Square thinks it's worthwhile investment for them.

But xbox exec and some gaffers were telling us its impossible due to "security".

Ha good times.

Whatever Sony has cooking up at GDC it must be a freaking megaton. Why else would Microsoft announce such huge news. My guess is they wanted to try and take some shine off of Sony's boots before Sony shoves it right up their arse. Or maybe they did it out of the kindness of their hearts and are actually listening to what gamers want.

Yeah Sony's VR conference is tomorrow.

So from what I gather Microsoft is making it easier for developers to implement this kind of cross platform online multiplayer while simultaneously opening up their network to support it in the first place, with other console networks too. Nice.

I wonder if Sony will accept any invitation (Rocket League is currently PC/XBO cross platform multiplayer at the moment) - since they are in a position of power to leverage sales from more people knowing they can buy a PS4 to play with their friends, over an Xbox One or even PC.

I'd be surprised if anyone could connect to Nintendo.

Their network is probably made of dead pigeons and gum.

It's fun to take potshots at Nintendo, except the Wii U has had a fair few cross platform multiplayer games, for example Nnooo's Cubemen 2 supported cross-online-multiplayer between Wii U, Linux, Mac OS, PC and iOS.

Also: Pure Chess on Wii U. Nintendo was fine with cross-platform multiplayer even to PSN.

They're (Nintendo) changing their policies on the technical side a lot swifter. We're launching Pure Chess and Knytt Underground later this year, and on Pure Chess we asked whether we could do cross-platform multiplayer, expecting it to be the typical closed console platform I've been used to working with for 20 years. Within a couple of days they said, 'yep, no problem. You can have other console players playing against Wii U players. You can have smartphone players play against them. No problem.'

We're still talking to Sony about them relaxing their policies, but we don't think they'll have any issue with it. So when we launch Pure Chess you'll be able to play against Wii U, 3DS, iOS and Android players. And when we patch PlayStation those consoles will be added into the mix as well.

There are a few more Wii U indie titles that do it, but I digress.

well at least you keep me entertained

I also doubt big games will go crossplatform...but for normal non insane reasons

Its enough devloper statements out to know that SONY, and Nintendo is ok with cross platform play.

It hasnt happen before because of MS policy. If it wasnt there FF14 would have been an example

Well, the Win 10 and Xbox One stuff will be the easy one. Really not sure if Sony will jump on board with that as well.

They can't be the bad guy if they allow it already, they already said thy would. Theres no bad guy in this..well except if dev choose not to do it

Saying something and doing something are two different things. We'll see. I'm not saying I don't trust Sony or something like that but in the end companies will do what's best for them. Cross-play is very good for Microsoft, somewhat of a saving grace even. For Sony? Meh, they don't really need it.
