Microsoft announces Xbox Live cross-network (PSN and other networks) play

Hehe ok. For your logic to apply competitors would have to be on semi-equal footing - where features of these sorts would be a significant selling point or differentiating factor that drives sales. Since this feature does not do that in any major way and since the competitors are distanced by fair measure...this basically does nothing. It's nice (future wise it has potential and it's good MS got the foot out the door first) and perhaps some games get to benefit from it down the line but, lets not overstate its relevance.

So from what I gather Microsoft is making it easier for developers to implement this kind of cross platform online multiplayer while simultaneously opening up their network to support it in the first place, with other console networks too. Nice.

I wonder if Sony will accept any invitation (Rocket League is currently PC/XBO cross platform multiplayer at the moment) - since they are in a position of power to leverage sales from more people knowing they can buy a PS4 to play with their friends, over an Xbox One or even PC.

It's fun to take potshots at Nintendo, except the Wii U has had a fair few cross platform multiplayer games, for example Nnooo's Cubemen 2 supported cross-online-multiplayer between Wii U, Linux, Mac OS, PC and iOS.

Also: Pure Chess on Wii U. Nintendo was fine with cross-platform multiplayer even to PSN.

There are a few more Wii U indie titles that do it, but I digress.
Needs to be quoted as much as possible:

They're (Nintendo) changing their policies on the technical side a lot swifter. We're launching Pure Chess and Knytt Underground later this year, and on Pure Chess we asked whether we could do cross-platform multiplayer, expecting it to be the typical closed console platform I've been used to working with for 20 years. Within a couple of days they said, 'yep, no problem. You can have other console players playing against Wii U players. You can have smartphone players play against them. No problem.'

We're still talking to Sony about them relaxing their policies, but we don't think they'll have any issue with it. So when we launch Pure Chess you'll be able to play against Wii U, 3DS, iOS and Android players. And when we patch PlayStation those consoles will be added into the mix as well.

The Pure Chess folks basically confirmed that Nintendo has been perfectly cool with Wii U owners playing against other consoles, but it was Sony and until now MS who wouldn't play along.

This is huge if Nintendo jumps in and reconfirms this and for example works with MS to have Minecraft folks play between Wii U, XBO, 360, and PC players. Actually it's almost likely as not to be forgetting, MS themselves officially publish the Wii U version in Japan, which is their only published non-XB game in their history since entering the market with the OG Xbox.

This is low key a Final Fntasy XIV announcement haha. Wow what an amazing news, I hope Sony step up and work with them to implement this properly. Or at least authorize the developers to apply it.

I know Sony has allowed this with PC, but have they ever explicitly said they would allow it with other console networks, like Live?

Not trolling, I'm just wondering if this does genuinely open it up to have XBL vs PSN play. I mean great if so, really.

This is pretty cool. If PSN enables play with Xbox as well it effectively ends the "which console are you getting it on" issue for multiplayer games. Your friend can have one console and you another and still enjoy a game together. That's great.

Already enabled, MS is finally joining the party.

Two strangers play Journey. They laugh and they cry together and with the help of each other they beat the odds and reach the end. Now they are friends. The credits start rolling and they can see their names for the first time:

Any reason why? Or is it just a feeling?

Why would any of the choices Sony is gonna do make them "lose" anything? Xbone getting cross-play would be a win for everyone and Sony won't lose anything. Sony had an advatage before? What kind of advantage?

Why do people keep saying this? Sony hasn't been against it. That's why YoshiP (FFXIV producer) has been saying that ball is in Microsoft's court as far as if the game will ever come to the Xbox One because they have to allow cross-platform play between the Xbox One and the PS4/PC. Dragon Quest X was also announced for the PS4, which means it's going to have cross-platform play between it and Nintendo platforms as well as the PC.

Because SonyToo.

This is huge. Like its been mentioned the 'friends play on X console" wall will come tumbling down. I got many sports games last gen for PS3 because thats where most of my friends, co workers played. But I had more games overall on 360.

Never thought MS would change their stance on this, so good on them!

Hope most MP games allow this from now on (at least between consoles).

Loving the 'come on Sony' posts - its not like they having been doing this for ages already :)

ps3ud0 8)

They're saying that because they read the blog post. It ends with an invitation to basically Sony to agree to it as well. So the come on Sony posts are about Sony also agreeing to full cross play, as currently the reality is for PC to be the neutral ground between them in Rocket League.

Really? It was Microsoft. Sorry guys but Microsoft was the bad guy in this story until today.

I don't understand how people are just ignoring that fact.

It's weird. Microsoft JUST announced it, but everyone seems to think it's retroactive.

We've always been at war with Eastasia.

It was Microsoft!! Lol wth. Until now that is

Microsoft. Like, how many multiplatform multiplayer games are on the Wii U and PS4/Xbox One? MS has been the one that's been stubborn about letting other console players play against those on XBL.

Did you even read that post. It's Microsoft who's been stopping it for "security" reasons

Really? It was Microsoft. Sorry guys but Microsoft was the bad guy in this story until today.

I was aware of that in the first place. My oriignal point was about RL crossplay between the three platforms. I'm right in thinking it's now up to Sony to allow that now (for RL), aren't I?

No they havent? They've allowed it on about 2 games.
Where have they been actively preventing it like Microsoft has in the past? I think every time cross platform play has been brought up to devs, MS has been the roadblock.

Either way, this is really good and I hope we see a lot of games using this. I'm not sure if we will see games like FFXIV or DQX show up if it requires them to implement a feature that allows them to play with Xbox players only.
