Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

So for the people who feel this is bullshit, what would you do if it turns out not to be bullshit?

Personally I would strongly consider to abandon consoles alltogether and invest money into a gaming PC.

This is exactly the situation I wanted to avoid with a console and even exclusives are hardly a justification...

I can't even see how they're gonna pull it off, especially for existing users.

I dunno, they should have rather asked for a more expensive version back in the day instead of going this route...
Allthough I understand why they didn't, after the PS3 fiasco.

This story is obviously BS. Of course they are working on something to replace ps4 bit it's years away. Whoever said this is confused. Maybe they saw a ps4/vr combo model and made bad assumptions

Patrick Klepek has broken huge gaming stories before, i sincerely doubt he would type up this stuff unless he was somewhat sure of what he was typing.

so naw

Jesus first Xbox doing an incremental update and now Sony too? I regret jumping into this gen early with PS4 and Xb1 if true.

Should have stuck to PC and Nintendo.

Ehhhh if you've been following the rumors it sounds like Nintendo is doing the same thing

Honestly if the big three go the apple route of incremental upgrades, then all the consoles would be now are glorified PCs and the Big three should just invest in providing a client ecosystem on PC.

Well Microsoft is doing just that.

Probably just boosted internals for VR and increased res that comes bundled with VR or something. The rest of us peasants would probably just have to buy a peripheral.

That is the only logical configuration I can see for this future.

Aiming for 4k on a console at this point is not going to happen. They would have to use a Fury X for it to be worth it and that's way too expensive.

This situation feels painfully similar to the numerous "Sony Too" rumors when Xbox One's initial plan was revealed.

This is a rumor.

It is not confirmed.

It is not even confirmed by more than one source.

Yet we have all of the exact same reactions in here as back then.

"Yes! See? Amazing! Lol what will Sony fans say now!?!?"

I would continue playing my PS4 until it gives up and probably move to Nintendo/PC.

Considering the writer of the article, Patrick Klepek, broke the Xbox 180 story, I think it's as good as done at this point.

Really not interested.

PS4 to me still feels like a "new" console that's yet to really hit it's stride. Such a waste if it never gets the chance to in it's current form.

I kind of feel the same.

I'm still happy with 1080p for now, until we get much more content (tv, film, and games) for 4K displays.

But eventually, new 4K TV + PSVR + PS4.5 + Summer Lesson + DOAX = Solaire, me, and wallet wiping our foreheads

Forget about the PS5, the problem is that they need more power right now. 4k TVs are down to $1,000 and they have VR to sell that will be competing with Oculus and Rift.

They know MS will make a better box to do both those things, or throw the Xbox brand behind windows to make it happen there. Therefore they need more power now, or they risk losing everything.

Remember, the reason the Ps4 succeeded, as much as people hate to admit it, was the same as the 360 - because it's the best place to play multiplats, which is largely a power issue. If the new Xbox is allowed to become that box (CoD and Fifa in 4K!), Sony loses. They need to move now, it's as simple as that.

Want to know why 4K is so cheap now? There's no content for it so people are not buying them. People are still buying 1080p TV's. yes they are buying 4K but no one is using those abiliteis. I work for broadcast TV network. There are only a couple who broadcast in 4k and FCC has not mandated anything yet for stations to be up to snuff in being able to transmit 4k.

It's still going to be a while, 4k gaming is still for enthusiasts. Please show me some new games like GTA V running in 4k on a PC under 1000 dollars? You wont of if you do your frame rate wont be 60 that's for sure.

You're looking at this from your perspective. It's blinding you a bit here.

Most people want to buy something in one box and plug it to their TV rather easily without much fuss.

PCs also have a perception problem. Most people don't connect PCs to their home theaters. That's a very niche crowd.

Then you also have to buy additional controllers. Most gaming consoles come with one controller at least.

Moreover, 1000 bucks is not cheap. That's exorbitant for a gaming device. It seems the market has settled as 400 bucks as being the highest option.

Right, and I'm saying that they can't afford gaming at 4K for 400 bucks. Which is my actual problem. PC gaming to get to 4K isn't cheap. Console won't be cheap either.

I also see a messaging problem much like what the Wii U had. You could easily communicate to the mass market the appeal of the PS4 over the PS3. How do you market an increase that's marginal, to many people, and requires a different TV than the ones in a lot of people's houses to even take advantage of?

Sounds like bullshit to me. Especially since Sony has been pushing the concept of every PS4 being the same as a major selling point to developers for PSVR at GDC

I mean, let's be honest. Both the PS4 and Xbox One are severely underpowered in today's market. It needs help to stay consistent and feel cutting edge in any form or fashion. The unfortunate side effect is...why wouldn't someone just go PC at that point?

I have no idea why people make this point. Do you really believe that consoles are driven by not needing to upgrade? Or that the majority of console users would happily consider a PC?

Consoles are about the following:
-Ease of use
-Cheaper off the shelf
-Form factor that fits the living room
-Standard controller and standard controls across games
-Exclusive games

That's it. I'm a console gamer and I would not switch to PC because it's too expensive, it's too unwieldy for my living room, the games I like aren't there and many control with keyboard and mouse which I hate.

A new PS4 that can play games at 4K with the same fidelity and framerate as it's current games and releasing this fall for around the same pricepoint (maybe a bit more expensive) and with a comparable form factor (possibly a bit larger)?

I call BS on that.

Some more power for VR would be welcome, but no way will it be so much more powerful that 4K will be achievable.

Is this even possible, budget wise? I have no idea if anyone has more powerful APUs that would work for this. They also basically said "fuck off" to Nvidia. IMO they should trash that shitty CPU before upgrading the GPU.

Wow. Not sure how I feel about this. I don't have a lot of disposable income to spend right now, so that's why I got a current gen console, so I could play it for a long time. I guess I'll have to see details of how this actually rolls out.

If it's true then I hope Sony will allow us to choose 1080p 60fps instead of 4K. Playing games smoothly is more of important as I don't have 4K tv. But deep down I hope this is false news.

Maybe it's really just the PS5 and some devs called it a PS4.5 because it's just the same hardware setup, but more powerful. With the move to X86, that's really what it should be anyways. The PS4 was released in 2013 and we're in year 3 already and Sony likely started working on the next box right after the PS4 was released. So it'd make sense that developers would be talking about it already, especially if we're back to a good 5 year cycle instead of a bullshit 7-8 year cycle (which was waaaaay too long). The PS5 being the PS4, but better and with full BC is exactly what I want out of it.

So for the people who feel this is bullshit, what would you do if it turns out not to be bullshit?

I've not chimed in yet but honestly, probably stop buying consoles. I couldn't afford all three this gen, I doubt I can afford the NX and don't know if I want it until I see more so the only systems I have are my PS4 and my PC. I can't afford to keep upgrading both and I'm not a huge fan of settling when I know I could have a better experience with better hardware, so I'd have to choose between my PS4 and my PC. PC wins that fight.

Of course I'd keep my PS4 for its lifespan, but I'd probably feel a little less inclined to buy games for it, even exclusives, knowing I'm only getting a lesser experience than I could be having. I guess in essence I'd probably hold out until the system is at an end of its life and grab the games I wanted on the highest level hardware it's compatible with, or at least at a time when the prices have fell sharply.

BTW the new for me looks like loltaku bullshit.

Even so I will love to see a PS4 @ 2.5TF to play in 1080p@60fps.

Yep, if this is true I'll just get a PC.

I don't get how anyone can be excited about this? It leads to a devastatingly ruinous path for gaming, at least for a mass audience in the console space.

Alright alright, let's look at the facts: Here's a Digital Foundry article about 4k gaming and how demanding it is: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-vs-4k-gaming

There's just no way they're launching a $400-$500 PS4 that can run current gen games at 4k. It's not possible. This is either BS, or that "PS4.5" is just PS4 slim that supports upscaling to 4k.

Meh,
The GPU isn't what is holding back most games
The CPUs in both PS4 & XB1 are pretty weak, what options are there for a CPU upgrade bar same Jaguar cores & overclock?

A 980ti can't consistently hold 60fps at 4k on high settings in new games.

A 970 can't hold 30fps at 4k on medium/high settings at 4k in new games.

The PS4 performs about equal or a little worse than a 750ti.

There is no way that Sony is making a 4K games playing PS4. The cost increase is suicide.

Exclusives ;P

Belittled at the start of the gen but if this turns out to be true there's really not that many more reasons to stay on console imo. Sure, it'll still be more comfortable, but since you will have to buy the entire new console instead of just single parts you might actually end up spending more money on PS4 + PS4K than on a mid-tier gaming PC where you update the GPU somewhere in your timeframe of choice during the gen.

This is how its gonna be now huh. I have no problems with it honestly. 8 year cycles are too long. Half-way through the gen consoles are calculators. This should advance technology at a faster pace.

The era of generations is over?

Wow.

It says for better VR game support but yea...the generation in the traditional sense is over if this happens.

MS hinted at it for their overall business goals. Sony hinting at it for better VR experiences. Sony might as well give it better specs for overall gaming....

Well ...I am in the market for a new PS4 and will finally get an XBO.

I might as well just hold off for now to see what both MS and Sony do. Nintendo may get my money when the NX launches by default...lol.

This gen and the next is going to be.....Interesting™

Stick to PC gaming, don't have the money to upgrade a console every few years on top of PC. I've owned every PlayStation but that won't continue if this comes true.

It's not such a crazy idea. It doesn't have to fracture the userbase. Just make sure each game runs on the original hardware as well.

Maybe Patrick has lost all his scooping skills now Dan shaved his beard off and he's now posting insane things?

Real talk though, I'm all for it if it is a significant boost and I do mean significant. I could see internal pressure from the rest of Sony to do this to help with UHD TV and blu-ray adoption. Just wondering if they do pull the trigger.

It is questionable on how they will be able to render many of the games that are developed for the PS4 in 4K. There is questionable performance on the current range on GPU's, so it may take until a Pascal/Pascal revision until we get affordable cards that can render games in 4K. Or, they could use some sort of custom solution. That however, would drive up the cost even more. I could see this product being at least 2 years out if they intend to release it.

Either they release it soon and offer it at a premium price, or wait longer until prices fall to offer it at a relatively affordable price. Of course, this depends on if they are willing to take a loss, custom solutions, production volume + EofS, etc.
