Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

it sounds more like PS5 than PS4.5

the PS4 project started back in 2007-2008

... after the launch of the PS3, when Kutaragi gave way to Kazuo Hirai as the head of Sony Computer Entertainment, the subsidiary that oversees the PlayStation, Cerny took his shot. In 2007, after winning the approval of Yoshida, who was still in charge of game development for the PlayStation, he put himself forward as the lead architect of the PS4.

2007 was when Mark Cerny began researching the X86 processor that's now inside PlayStation 4. His passion for Sony's new machine and what ought to be in it led him to pitch for control of the project. He got it.

...

As early as 2008, Mark Cerny began asking developers what they wanted in PS4.

If this only for 4K and VR I don't care.. If this upgrade is used to screw me and current useres from upcoming games then WTF Sony.

Video game companies are really bothering me lately. It's getting insanely greedy and they are going to push me away from my favorite hobby :(

I mean, let's be honest. Both the PS4 and Xbox One are severely underpowered in today's market. It needs help to stay consistent and feel cutting edge in any form or fashion. The unfortunate side effect is...why wouldn't someone just go PC at that point?
If it's a standalone console upgrade...$400 PS4 + $400 PS4.5 is about the cost of an average PC. Although I'm hoping it's some kind of external box attachment instead.

Console gaming in my tiny Brooklyn apartment is still the way to go for me. I literally have no where to put a PC tower.

I have no idea why people make this point. Do you really believe that consoles are driven by not needing to upgrade? Or that the majority of console users would happily consider a PC?

Consoles are about the following:
-Ease of use
-Cheaper off the shelf
-Form factor that fits the living room
-Standard controller and standard controls across games
-Exclusive games

That's it. I'm a console gamer and I would not switch to PC because it's too expensive, it's too unwieldy for my living room, the games I like aren't there and many control with keyboard and mouse which I hate.

Sounds like you haven't checked out PC gaming in quite some time, though

So for the people who feel this is bullshit, what would you do if it turns out not to be bullshit?

If I were a Xbox gamer I'd just buy a PC and be done with it.

As a PS4 gamer it's not as easy, because many of the games I play and appreciate on it are exclusive to the device...maybe I'd sell the PS4 and buy a PS4.5 but it'd depend on how much I'd still have to shell out. More than 200$ difference (which is almost certain) and I'd just wait for PS5.

But it also depends on upgrade intervals and power difference, so I don't know.

Please be BS ;(

I will have to wait to see what this actually is before forming a real opinion.
Just saying "PS4.5" doesn't mean anything to me. It could just be a new model with a slightly better GPU/CPU. ie something minor like the N3DS or DSi. Or it could be Sony's next console that will release Holiday 2018 or later, and will be called the PS5, which wouldn't be that weird.
I've frequently heard about how console manufacturers start planning the next console shortly after they release a new one, so I fully expect Sony to be working on something new now that it will have been 3 years since the PS4 launched this fall. I think the hang up here is the nickname of PS4.5.

If this means Last Guardian gets pushed back to this thing, I'm going to be so angry. I will literally be done with consoles.

I have a hard time believing 4K gaming on home consoles is happening this soon while it's not that widely available on PC. By that I mean you kinda need a beast to pull it off, especially with big AAA games.

PS4.5 is a beast.

Geez not the smartphone comparisons again

A FREAKING HOME CONSOLE IS NOT THE SAME AS A DAILY USED SMARTPHONE

Understand that once for all. Consoles are there because you don't have to worry about new hardware for the next 5+ years. This is probably the main purpose of consoles in the last 30+ years. You can't change that just because some Apple and PC users demand it now for christ sake

I hope Sony comes out and clarifies the news the last few days. As someone who was very willing to drop $400 just a few days ago, I'm now going to wait and see what the hell else is going to happen and what is even true.

I'm not really mad, but there are things I need to think about.

1) Are Sony's exclusives enough to keep me from just getting a PC?
2) I don't own a 4k tv... do I want to invest in that in order to take advantage of this upgrade.
3) Do I need to wait on preordering VR this Tuesday with some of the uncertainty (I say this because I could definitely see them making some VR games only compatible with the new upgrade...so then I either need to upgrade or miss out) ?

At this point, I'm not sure i'll preorder VR now until I hear some clarification on matters (possibly what I should be doing anyways).
Edit: I was one of those people that bought a camera as soon as I heard it would be required and now I feel dumb since they have it bundled.

Would rather have 1080p/60 if that's the case. Couldn't care less about 4K at the moment.

I also, I wouldn't be shocked if things have just been misunderstood and this will be a new PS4 with 4K playback via the new blu rays and whatnot they got coming out.

Yes the PS4 could definitely use a boost in sales...wait what? Power is such an overrated thing in the console space, look at the Wii or PS2. People just want a lot of fun games for a cheap entry price.

Right, and I'm saying that they can't afford gaming at 4K for 400 bucks. Which is my actual problem. PC gaming to get to 4K isn't cheap. Console won't be cheap either.

I also see a messaging problem much like what the Wii U had. You could easily communicate to the mass market the appeal of the PS4 over the PS3. How do you market an increase that's marginal, to many people, and requires a different TV than the ones in a lot of people's houses to even take advantage of?

The 4k part of the rumor is interesting.

I don't think it will be all games. I just think it will have the support for it but developers will need to make compromises on a per title basis.

For some indies, I could see it be an attractive option.

...and that whole "upgradeed X1" conversation turned into a bloodbath so it will be interesting to see how the "pro-PS4" people here react to this...

For me, I would happily upgrade my PS4 or X1 if it meant solid frame rates with all the bells and whistles...

Likewise. Granted, I do recognize why lots of folks have an issue with this but, for better or for worse, I've been conditioned by the current cell phone model to be comfortable buying the new, upgraded version every 2-3 years or so. I'd just buy the new one and sell off my old one (actually sell, not trade in) to help offset the costs.

Smart phone gets away with upgrade every year, and it costs a lot more than console. Why wouldn't this work for a console?

I *just* bought a ps4 for christmas. Sigh. We'll see. I plan on getting a 4k tv by year's end, just cause, but it'll be up to supported games to determine if I get this upgraded model anyway.

Consoles aren't subsidized by carrier contracts.

Maybe it's really just the PS5 and some devs called it a PS4.5 because it's just the same hardware setup, but more powerful. With the move to X86, that's really what it should be anyways. The PS4 was released in 2013 and we're in year 3 already and Sony likely started working on the next box right after the PS4 was released. So it'd make sense that developers would be talking about it already, especially if we're back to a good 5 year cycle instead of a bullshit 7-8 year cycle (which was waaaaay too long). The PS5 being the PS4, but better and with full BC is exactly what I want out of it.

I hope you are right.

Exclusives ;P

Belittled at the start of the gen but if this turns out to be true there's really not that many more reasons to stay on console imo. Sure, it'll still be more comfortable, but since you will have to buy the entire new console instead of just single parts you might actually end up spending more money on PS4 + PS4K than on a mid-tier gaming PC where you update the GPU somewhere in your timeframe of choice during the gen.

Where you playin Stardew Valley tho?

Just sayin both sides have current exclusives, I'd love to see it all come together on all platforms.

Stardew Valley is a system seller, goddammit.

Bullshit. They would need to sell units at a high price or big loss due to needing 2-4x the power needed for 1080p unless you want high res low detail games.

And I doubt that the average person(who consoles are aimed at) would shallow upgrades.

This is likely a stupid rumor because this would undermine the whole point of consoles and it doesn't make any sense from any standpoint in the current market.
I would also really doubt they would call it the PS4.5 instead of PS5 because that is very unclear.

nintendo-nx-controller-stewie-539x428.jpg

Lol, wtf happened to Stewie head?

I'm sorry but there's no way that this rumor has the details right.

It's just not possible unless Sony plans on putting out a new console for 800 plus.

Besides exclusives, this just makes PC gaming more appetizing as it will more than likely be cheaper than upgrading your PS4. Also I don't buy that games will be running 4K, most PC owners can't and unless the PS4.5 is expensive as ass, I don't see it happening.

Makes no sense. The gpu required for these types of shannigans needs too much power, gets to hot and will be too expensive even if talking about a 2018 launch.
Not to mention increased graphical fidelity.

Alright alright, let's look at the facts: Here's a Digital Foundry article about 4k gaming and how demanding it is: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-vs-4k-gaming

There's just no way they're launching a $400-$500 PS4 that can run current gen games at 4k. It's not possible. This is either BS, or that "PS4.5" is just PS4 slim that supports upscaling to 4k.

Maybe today it still is, but with new GPU coming from Nvidia and AMD prices are sure to drop in the next, so who knows... as someone posted, and "Extra Power Unit" for your Xbox/PS4 in the 400/500 range...?

Anyone knows if it's feasable?

Geez, some people need to calm down.

Iterative hardware is going on in every other part of the tech industry. Why should game consoles be any different?

New GPUs get released all the time, new phone and tablet models come out every year. Microsoft and Sony hint at releasing more powerful versions on their consoles and people lose their shit...

Get used to it, because its going to be the new normal.
Preach. I don't get the panic.

If they unveil this thing and start talking about PS4K exclusives, then we may have a reason to be angry. But until then...we should be excited about the possibilities.

As an example, just because Apple released an iPhone 6s last year, doesn't mean my iPhone 6 suddenly stopped working or was no longer supported. It's not like PS4 owners wouldn't be able to play Uncharted 4...but perhaps PS4K owners could play Uncharted 4 at a higher framerate, more effects, etc.

If Sony and Microsoft do this the right way - debatable, and certainly not a guarantee - but if they do...it could be phenomenal for gamers.

If this comes out next year, it will be 4 years since the console release. Very reasonable IMO, and far better than 10-year cycles

The majority of PS4 owners bought their console within the last couple years. For me, this-gen has just started. Now Sony wants me to believe it's time for a new gen already? Sony can try whatever they want, but people don't want to upgrade every 4 years. They can't just walk back the 10-year cycle of last-gen; people are used to that now.

I buy consoles, aside from exclusives, because I know that devs have optimized their game for one hardware model and don't have to worry about the PC upgrade cycle. Devs love that too. Having to support multiple-gen SKUs leads to higher dev costs and a less-optimized experience for the lower-tier hardware.

Just sold my PS4 & won't be buying any games for my X1 that don't get cross release with PC.
The future seems vague with consoles.

He's right.

It's about broad based perception, not individual reality.

The perception for most people is that consoles are more convenient gaming devices.

The PC market is still very healthy. Healthier than consoles in the long run too.

oh my god, please tell me this is a rumor...
Uh. Isn't 4K called 4K because it has 4 times the amount of pixels as 1080p, not twice.
No. 4K is twice the res of 1080p, but the overall pixel count comes to something close to 4,000. That's why it's called 4K

I'll believe this when Sony says something about it. If there is some type of upgrade it better not mess with current users of the systems already out there.

I have no problem with this if I can buy an upgrade kit to my current PS4 instead of a whole new console, but I don't know if it's even technically possible.

Here's to the inevitable flood of 4K PS3/PS4 remasters if this is true, you know they're coming!
