Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

Lol you gotta be kidding me.

So now PS4 owners get shafted and have to buy the new iteration.

Unless there's a surprise console announcement this year, let's assume a Fall 2017 launch. That would be four years after the PS4. In other words, a traditional console cycle. That would make this not an incremental PS4 update at all.

since this a similar topic to some recent Xbox threads I think it's important to state that Sony is killing the PlayStation brand. This is obviously their exit strategy.

Also, it is important to note that Devs are not capable of developing for multiple SKUs so this is incredibly anti-developer.

It was fun while it lasted. I hope Sony and MS devs find somewhere to develop for Mobile or Nintendo because those are our last best hope for this beautiful industry.

It's a shame that mismanagement at Sony and MS have brought us to the precipice.

sounds like what is essentially a "PS5" with PS4 backwards compatibility.

i thought people wanted PS4 backwards compatibility? i want that

This could be the end for consoles if this is something they play with. The pro's don't outweigh the con's IMHO.

To many variables for developing for more console versions=more money it takes for developers. Means people who buy your PS4 base model are now confused why certain features or certain games look, run or are exclusive to newer model.

I just see it as developers pushing back, but not everyone of them. You don't want to sacrifice your vision of your project developers? Well optimize your engine more. From what I'v been seeing so far issues are with their engines, production pipeline. Look at Unity, and many others that ran like shit. Maybe make games complete, and giant patch free.

This could be the downfall of consoles. CHasing that mobile/pc strat that really works for just those honestly.

God I hope this is only something they are playing around with.

Seems like a mistake to me. The PS4 is currently so popular, doing this could have some backlash and divide the install base.

Or maybe it wouldn't, it works for phones. They've been doing it with the Xperia line for a while. But I dunno, let's see.

Sounds like bullshit to me. Especially since Sony has been pushing the concept of every PS4 being the same as a major selling point to developers for PSVR at GDC

Also, this. I agree.

This

Also, having an upgraded version that is able to play games in 4K would be a huge upgrade, not exactly "PS4.5"

This thread should be closed. It's a rumour with no basis.

1. They're already pushing an expensive device this year on top of selling the console
2. One of the pros of that device is that every PS4 is the same
3. The PS4 is selling like hot cakes and they have no need to revise it

This is as good as confirmed, considering Patrick is the author of this report. There's a reason he has the nickname Scoops, and he would not even touch this story if he hadn't thoroughly vetted it first.

To the people calling BS, I'm sorry, but you are very, very likely wrong -- for better or worse.

GAF WHY U LET KOTAKU DO THIS TO YOU????

Kotaku has probably the best investigative journalist on their payroll. They have consistently broken stories and have been proven right. They pretty much confirmed the PS4 and X1 specs months before they were unveiled.

All the I'll just build a PC comments.....and yet you will do the exact same thing on that. Upgrade your GPU every 2-3 years which is about the cost of a console

Yeah but then we get all the benefits of a PC.

I, personally, have been teetering towards PC for a long time, but the easiness of consoles, how long they last, the fact that you can rent, and so on, have kept me being a console gamer.

Take away one of the things I like with the consoles, and there's little reason for me to stick with them.

People pay for a slim model years after launch. What if the revision was more powerful. Looking at the post here they need to realize the console base hates spending money. Make it cheap and weak as possible.

I think it's more perplexing that they'd jump from 1080p to 4k.

RIP 1440p.

I don't think anyone's expecting the major blockbusters to run at 4k. Those will probably be upscaled from some appropriate resolution.

But indie games and movies will be in 4k, and VR will work better. That's all they'll need to be able to honestly call it the PS4k and watch it fly off shelves.

All five of my points are still relevant to consumers today. Like, to this very day.

More like grandpas and grandmas, pal

Ease of use is dominated by phones, consoles are for the old. I don't see this working out well for either MS or Sony, but the devil is in the details. If they can keep it simple they're good. I don't think they will do it right first out the gate.

We talked about this in the MS upgraded console thread. But I will say again:

They released revisions ever since they launched consoles. And the revisions be minimal at best. Many of us got those revisions because they bought something to the table.

Doing this will bring even more to the table. So I dont mind this, like I changed my mind in that MS thread. (At first I didnt like the idea until someone bought up the Jasper mobo revision in the 360)

I do think it could cause some issues, like many bought up in that massive thread.
And yea...PC gaming would look better n better if this happens. All platforms got exclusives. Might as well get multi platform on PC.

PC gaming and Nintendo also starts looking better n better too. MS and Sony better be careful.

I have no problem with this, because I expect I will always be able to buy "PS4.X" games and play them on my current hardware, no matter what. There will NOT be PS4.5 exclusive games.

I typically replaced my console after 3-4 years so hopefully this model will be out before I need one.

But this will launch at $399 again... won't it...

Just like rumored MS plans, I'm still not convinced this is a good strategy or that the market will support it, but it's not my money.

I'd consider buying depending on price and compatibility, along with a nagging feeling that it might be doomed to fail.

Good guy Sony milking the ps4 install base /s

Good on them. Takes care of the BC and still be able to move forward tech wise. Can't wait for both Sony and MS' offering

Don't have a current-gen console yet, so it would be perfect for me if it's out before FFXV! If it isn't more than 400€, which I doubt if it's 4K.

I didn't buy my PS4 with the assumption that it would be obsolete and less powerful than a new machine within 1-2 years. I shouldn't have to worry about minimum specs, developers should still be pushing the limits of what the PS4 can do.

I would ask you to look up the definition of obsolete, but clearly you're going for hyperbole here

In all likelihood, Sony is probably planning for the PS5 rather than a PS4 upgrade. They probably sold it as "It will basically be a PS4 but it does 4K."

If they just called it the PS5 instead of a "PS4.5" would people still be freaking out?

To me this is a good thing as long as they dont split the player bases and really no developer is going to make "only" PS4.5 games because they'd be throwing away tons of sales (just like how you can count how many new 3DS only games there are on one hand).

Surely this arguement can die peacefully now, right?

I didn't touch my GPU for 5 years and it was running AAA games at medium/high settings just fine until this year. I only upgraded because my old card died.

If they can make the new console affordable, hell--it's a good thing! They can't, though. Not to make a noticeable difference between current-PS4 games and new-PS4.5 games. There's just straight up a hardware cost associated with that, and it would likely be not insignificant.
